An Unofficial Video for Ambulance by TV On the Radio

I wrote recently about the design and production process for an ongoing video I was making for the song Ambulance by TV On The Radio in collaboration with Calli Higgins. Well, I’m proud to announce that we finished the video this week and it’s now online for your viewing pleasure (best enjoyed full screen):

Ambulance (unofficial video) from Greg Borenstein on Vimeo.

After completion, I calculated that between the two of us Calli and I put around 370 hours into making this video. I worked on it for twelve weeks and she worked on it for five.

One striking contrast in the animating process was how quickly the edit came together in comparison with the actual animating. Since shooting each second of video and applying the character’s faces was so time consuming, the video was storyboarded relatively tightly to not waste any precious seconds of footage.

We couldn’t be prouder of the final result and are currently trying to get in touch with the band to show it to them. If you have any leads for how we can do that, please get in touch with me.

If you want to learn more about the design and construction process for the set and characters, take a look at my earlier post: Ambulance Video Design Process and Animatic.
