ALSO: Keep your eye on this address. They just recently kicked out the gang crew that was living there and it's being renovated as we speak. Probably getting flipped and it's right around the corner from us:
Some highlights from the Portland Maps records for the gang house:
"complaint received - overcrowding, twenty people living in a 4 bedroom house."
"Complaint Received - Tons of trash, random weight bench and free weight in front yard, dog feces on the sidewalk"
"complaint received: Constant noise coming from property that can be heard in neighboring homes even with all doors and windows secured. Very loud cars idling and revving engines at all hours, constant visitors and lots of cars with very loud music and bass. Cars with loud music parked in front of adjacent properties. Burning out in cars and trucks in front of adjacent properties. Loud music in the house many nights."
I am about to liquidate my real estate. So thrilling! As of Jan 27 I will no longer be the owner of a home. My capital will be all virtual. A hard pivot into exchange value from use value. Expecting things to be different ... spiritually.
Leland what will happen?? Where will you live, what will you do with your exchanged value? BET IT ALL ON A HORSE!
We are going the opposite route. Dudes, we are HOUSE HUNTING!!!!!!! It is fucking crazy and dumb and exciting and scary! All I can think about is "soon I will be able to plant tomatoes" but maybe that is not a great reason to buy a house
Cannot think of a better reason to buy a house (I bought one, in large part, because I wanted to take baths)! Tell me what you're looking for! I'll find it for you! So exciting!
Girl- don't stop at tomatoes! Plant ASPARAGUS- a true investment and vote of confidence in your future (because it takes like, seven years to start producing spears.) Also when it comes up it looks like ZOMBIE FINGERS!!!
Nothing as risky as a horse.. I met a fella on the way to market and it turns out he's the world's foremost expert on beans.. Magic Beans! Can't wait to plant them. What could go wrong?
Truthfully though, the house I've been renting has turned into a kind of factory. Comfortable enough here for now, but maybe looking to expand this year.
My next residence is likely to be a collective, multi-function, commercial enterprise, probably under lease.
Flossy, you should totally check out the market around here. There's not a ton for sale, but the prices compared to pdx are so refreshing. We're looking for walking-distance from downtown Northampton or Easthampton. We're working with a buyers' representative who is very nice and is showing us a ton of stuff--we're looking on Friday at this crazy Frank Lloyd Wright-esque house in the straight-up woods, as well as a thing with a mansard roof and a whole stand-alone studio space in this little village called Florence that I don't actually want to live in. There are so many cheap beautiful houses that are just utterly in the middle of nowhere down by a beautiful river and part of me is like, MAYBE? But a bigger part of me knows that I'd be bummed if I couldn't walk or at least bike to a coffee shop. we'll see what happens.
The market here is interesting because it's not a development zone. People buy houses and live in them for 40 years, like normal people. So A LOT of the houses we look at online were last on the market in 1977. On the inside they are beyond heinous, like time capsules. It's pretty cool. One had an ancient brick fireplace right in the middle of the back yard, for cooking a hog or something.
We looked the other day at a house built in 1896. It's walking distance from downtown, amazing location, but I swear, NOTHING has been done to it since 1896 except paint and add weird lean-tos onto it. It was the weirdest house I've ever been in. The weirdest floor plan and half a kitchen randomly upstairs in one of the bedrooms, because 50 years ago it was a half-assed duplex. It's been on the market for 4 months--it's way overpriced but the dude won't lower it. That's the only house we've looked at so far.
I am so excited that you guys are looking for a house. Old houses are weird. After living in this one for over five years we re-did our bathroom (so we could take nice baths). There was this super weird material on the walls, not drywall, just really thin laminate with a fake wallpaper texture. It was so ugly. When it got stripped off I was surprised to see what was underneath: wood! Our house was built in 1908 and I guess back in the day they had so much wood to spare that they would cover all the walls and ceilings with it. We also discovered a scary amount of black mold in the corner where the shower/tub used to be, which made us grateful for stripping all that shit off. Now we have proper ventilation and fresh walls. It's exciting to have the authority to make the place where you live better.
I don't know! I have the same question. He is specified as that.
I think the difference is that if you hire a realtor they will show you houses that they have an interest in selling, somehow? Houses they are in charge of selling? I'm not sure. I have no idea. We also spoke to a mortgage broker today and it was terrifying, there was a part where my old man said not as a joke, "I didn't understand a lot of the words you just said."
I could plant tomatoes here, it's true. I guess I just feel weird digging up the yard--it's all landscaped and a dude mowing it and taking care of it is included in our rent. I guess I could get big pots though. If we haven't bought a house by summer I will do that.
I got SO EXCITED when I read this: "Flossy, you should totally check out the market around here." My heart started beating a little faster. I should probably just get my damn real estate license, huh?
I'm going to start looking for you! And it will be so fun to look in a new location! Please post links to the ones you're looking at!
Our house is one of only two things my husband and I ever fight about. We have an issue with the foundation sort of bowing inward on one section of the house and after months of trying to figure out what to do we FINALLY got a structural engineer who came out and confirmed that I was not crazy for being worried about the house collapsing. Looks like we have to dig a 10 foot trench in our crazy neighbors' driveway.

I love that it has a steam room! I'm thoroughly disappointed in myself, though, for not knowing about this first.

You could own a shed that was once an icehouse!
They're both too far from downtown for what we're hoping, and that first one is on a gnarly-ass busy road. But so good looking!!
