The other thing we fight about is when we record bands, I don't like clipping on stuff like a lead vocal even when its a shouty "intense" performance because i think it's a goofy cliche and i don't like losing the transients and the air on the top end. I think he habitually sets the levels too high on things and he's like "You're being weird, it sounds fine!"
I love that mushroom house! It has weird things going on, though, like amazing and terrible together at last! That mural in the kid's room is, ughhh... And then weird brown shaggy carpet. But all those cool windows and a strange amount of light considering it's pretty adobe seeming... An adobe in Maryland?

Isn't it mind-boggling how there are a bunch of people in this city alone who live in super nice houses like that? It just doesn't even make sense to me somehow.
it's absurd, what is even the point. I get why the president has to live in a huge house, or somebody who does really epic fundraising as their job, or something, or like the chancellor of a university, where you're regularly having 200 people over for events, ok fine. But just regular rich people??? What is even fun about living in a house that big? It's JUST the spectacle of it. It's dumb. Plus it's cold and scary; I like to know where the old man is at all times and not go wandering around looking for him and wailing mournfully
I dunno you guys... SPACE is nice. I definitely think no one should live in a huge house where they don't use ALL of the space, that's obscene. But living in a huge place could be exciting if you managed to make a bunch of people benefit from it. Like, have friends over all the time, have an artist in residence zone, have a LIBRARY you share with your community... And then I do know some retirees who still live in the big house they raised their children in and they hold on to the property basically just because all their kids are broke and not ready for a house, but couldn't afford one anyway so they are like "Let's keep this one for when our kids want to settle.". I am talking about that type of house that the parents paid like $86 000 for in the eighties and wouldn't sell under $700 000 now.
How do you guys feel about owning more than one house? As a tenant in Victoria I used to get so grossed out by the concept that my landlords owned like five different houses in town. There was no hope of people like us ever buying a place, EVER. But now that I live in one house I own, I can't help but dream of having a pied-à-terre somewhere else in the world, even like a tiny cabin. I just want a shack somewhere snowy that I can run away to and ski.
my words were about giant mansions only, not about any house with decent space! Strongly agree that having enough space for private time is amazing. My life is so much better since we moved from a 500 square foot hut to a real human house. I can't even describe it, it's a whole new life and relationship to my home and I love it
I love the idea of the tiny house but I have such a fraught relationship with clutter that I can only imagine it being intensely stressful. I guess if I lived in one ALONE it would be sort of doable but I can't believe these people who are married and raising children in one!!!! Respect! But not for me!
Joey makes some good points! The DoS was HUGE but it wasn't a single residence, you know? Most people don't wanna share their private residences like that, tho, even if they have a huge place. Nowadays I wouldn't. Our place now is about 1100 sq ft and that seems perfect for 2 people and a cat who don't have a ton of stuff.
How about a zig-zag river forestry cabin? I've been eyeing those for years. There are laws against subletting forestry leased land so airbnb is probably out but might be able to list it as a vacation rental on the DL. Or just treat it as a UrHo timeshare.
About a year ago there was this perfect tiny private island on a lake with a house on it for sale that was under $200 000 CAN. I looked at it daily for a while and now it's gone. I sort of kick myself. You could ski from your house to the "land" in winter and canoe in the summer. Maybe someday I'll find something like it again.
Ugh. We have been in loan approval limbo forever and it's so depressing to look at how few houses are for sale! Then every time I log into VRBO or Airbnb I get a cheerful email from another filthy rich family wanting to rent the unit so they can house shop in Portland.
All you who bought in Portland last year were smart!
My friend just put an offer on a house. If it's accepted, she'll need to sell her current house, stat, and it's great. Around NE 35th and Alberta, 3 bdrm, cool redone basement w/fireplace, lot-and-a-half with lots of privacy. Will probably go for $400-450k (I think the higher end of that).
If you're interested, let me know and I'll see if she would sell directly to you!
