Today is Friday for those of us in certain academic circles, for it is Long Fall Weekend, a weird break in the middle of the semester that everyone is so excited about it might as well be Christmas. I don’t know why they have this break, but it really does feel so necessary. I feel like I’m in a Terry Gilliam movie, with stacks of books and messy ungraded papers piled to the ceilings, and I am wrapped up in forms and unread emails and a million library notices. Just give me two extra days and I know I can get caught up (lol).
The thrill of knowing I do not have to wake up at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow is almost like I am on drugs, it is that powerful.
I have all these students who can’t wake up when their alarm goes off. And they sit there and tell you that your class (which is at 10:30 a.m.) is their “first class” of the day and so it’s “really hard,” obviously, to get to it. 10:30!! Girl, by 10:30 I am already thinking about lunch! By 10:30 I have been awake for FIVE HOURS. Still, the nature of youth is fundamentally narcissistic and they just assume anyone over the age of 20 does nothing but wake up at the crack of dawn to do boring things they’ll never do because their life is going to be amazing like a movie. Ho ho ho!
5:30 though is legitimately too early. Lets face facts. That is just an ugly, brutal time to get up in the morning. It is FULL-ON nighttime now when I wait for the bus. It is straight-up stars in the sky, moon glimmering romantically, pitch black all around. All decent people should be in bed at this hour. And yet the bus pulls up and I ascend into its warm, gently huffing interior, and it is jam-packed with all manner of person. Laborers, teachers, who are all these people, and why are we here? What ungodly culture demands this of its slaves? And why is everyone reading Game of Thrones? Yesterday I read a bit over a lady’s shoulder. Oh Daenerys! Girl, get those dragons grown!
Daylight savings can not come a moment too soon. For the first time ever, I am really looking forward to it. I would love for there to be at least a glimmer of dawn in the sky when I begin my commute. Nobody understands about the farmers but I do. Going to milk the cows in the freezing blackness of the middle of the night can not be pleasant. Waking up the cows! Even the cows are sound asleep and there you are clattering along with your ol’ milk pail. Give me a break.
This weekend I am going to figure out how to make roasted vegetable soup. What kind will I make?? Does anyone have any great recipes? I want like a thick, cream-of something soup involving roasted veggies and a food processor. Specifically I’m not super interested in squash. Please hit me up! The base will be parmesan veggie stock. Can have cream or no cream–all I care about is that it is the best soup you have ever tasted in your mouth. HURRY, I’m making it tomorrow
this was good… I didn’t add the cheddar, and it was still quite good.
