Parenthetical Girls
An Entangled Experience
Posted by: James Maxwell
Sunday night at the Works was an amazing and memorable experience. The Parenthetical Girls, literally, rocked my world. I came to the event with no previous knowledge on the artistic musical group and I was completely blown away. The band’s lead singer and creator Zac Pennington was amazing to watch in both sets of the group’s performances. Parenthetical Girls never once became cliché or looked like they were trying to be something they were not and were truly authentic. It was so apparent how much passion all of the musicians have for their music, and Pennington created a band that cannot be duplicated.
The first set was the band performing their past music in chronological order. Pennington moved around the entire venue during the performance while the rest of the group stayed on stage staring solemnly straight into the crowd. The set was enhanced by a slide show behind the band that had numerous interestingly decorated rooms that reminded me of scenes straight out of a Wes Anderson film. Before the set was over Pennington told the audience we were in for a treat after a short break and he was absolutely right.
After the crowd went to the honey buckets and grabbed a cocktail we became witness to an even more magical performance. A full orchestra to help the group debut their new music off of their latest album, Entanglements, then accompanied the Parenthetical Girls. Once the band and orchestra began to play is when I realized I was experiencing something I would never forget. I cannot tell you how many concerts and performances I have seen in my 24 years of life, but I can tell you Sunday night’s show was one of the best. My friend and I stood silently watching the ensemble and were taken on an artistic journey. As we were walking out of the killer Leftbank Project venue, we looked at one another and all we could say is “WOW!” So thank you Parenthetical Girls for allowing us to experience something so special.
