I think we have a legitimate claim when we say these times are worse.
We are better informed (or so we think), we have more tools, more science, more technology, more resources and yet the struggles are still there.
To me the proof is that there is …
@Bill_McKinley:
I agree with DrJ that we are experiencing some sort of cold (civil) war. There are distinct sides and most of us are struggling to look into the other side's eyes. If some of us really said what was on our minds, we'd get into fistfi…
Spaghetti is a popular fall back. Around here we call it "cat food" sometimes because it's just a thing to put in your bowl when food planning is overwhelming.
When I get morbidly depressed and I don't know what to do with myself "the beach" is a g…
I have been looking at Fivethirtyeight obsessively twice a day.
And then Talking Points Memo in between, just to get updates and see what folks are talking about.
Sometimes it feels good to read the comments from internet strangers who are "on your …
At my house there is a couch I like to call "the beach" because it's right by the woodstove and right underneath a "Blues Buster" lightbulb. In the evenings, the warmth and light on that couch makes one feel like they are suntanning.
Between the gay bashing and that story about his dog that got a surprisingly small amount of attention I am wondering why Romney hasn't been excommunicated yet, because he is clearly evil.
I am nervous, too...
Thing is, even if the polls weren't so close I would still be agonizing over it because honestly I won't believe in Obama winning until it actually happens.
I was so burnt out and disappointed in Obama months ago, but I have bee…
The only way to pull off holiday theme is to go all the way. When only some artists participate in the holiday theme things feel awful. The serious work gets lost.
If you want festive, just listen to "Chris Mastheim" by NK on repeat. There.
I am c…
I like the teens as long as I also see some little kids.
Last night we came to the final conclusion that the Halloween vibe in our neighborhood is really young Hispanic children trick or treating pretty late at night (like, after 9PM).
So many cute …
@LT: I would like to congratulate you on giving it up.
It's hard and almost alienating. Not being able to share that coffee moment with my person, Fudge, who is a coffee nut was pretty sad.
But now I am over it.
Eight years later I feel like quittin…
I also gave up coffee (eight years ago) and my favorite warm breakfast drinks are peppermint tea and inka (sometimes a creamy brown drink tricks your being into believing it is participating in the Pacific Northwest grey days coffee love).
I found this documentary to be very informative and to answer many of my more specific questions:

WNYC's player won't work for me. Their page has been loading for over half-an-hour.
Maybe Matthew's internet is down?
I just hope that him and L. are under blankets snoozing the storm away with the cats.
Sorry about your sickness Owls!
Somebody bring Owls some soup!
I too would like to hear of who are the good health insurance people. Fudge has never had it in his life and now his parents have a very basic plan. We have nothing.
I have always felt …
@DrJ: Yeah, I want to hear people talk about global warming.
This is definitely global warming. Pretty late hurricane season, pretty far North for a storm of this magnitude.
Did people already forget about "The Day After Tomorrow"?
But seriously,…
This whole situation feels so "West Wing". Like some fictional drama where the storm of the century hits right before the election to make the President look good/bad.
I really hope damages will not be too severe in the end. The footage from Marylan…
I think there is a way to do Halloween comfortably. I think just having a simple black dress which can be used at the last minute as a witch costume is nice, you can probably even find a cheap hat once Halloween is over and have those two things aro…
I read recently that latex suits require lube when you put them on. It's a long complicated process. I think mixing sexy with any holiday is bad.
I don't think it's Halloween that's awkward, I think it's the people!
HALLOWEEN IS BEST!
Hurray for …
Marsupials are out of controooooooool!
It's like nature designed them specifically so that people's hearts warm up upon seeing them. That echidna is like a weird cartoon, it makes bubbles when it snorts milk!
Also, have you seen his weird weenie?
The Southern Hemisphere has the best animals.
One time I saw a real platypus (swimming in a huge tank). She looked as though she was wearing white eyeliner.
Eight year-old Isaac H. coined the term "Business Halloween"perfectly while explaining to Fudge that he is celebrating Halloween twice. Business Halloween is the Saturday before Halloween, when you dress up and collect candy from businesses around t…
This wasn't meant so much as a thread about the name "Joey" but more about those insanely cute tasmanian devil babies squirming around trying to TAZ OUT.
@Mikey: Don't hate on Halloween! There has to be some sort of Brooks Brothers thing you can wear that day, you'll find it!
I love Halloween, best day of the year in my opinion. I hope there will be some sort of poker game at my house that night. Lo…
