In a short 30 days, I will be without insurance, which is no good for me. COBRA is always crazy expensive, so I'm looking for some independent options. Doesn't have to be super-budget catastrophic, I'll need to refill some meds n' stuff (I have the asthma...). Suggestions?

And, I'm really really sick right now!
I'm too sick to leave the house and my crucial helpers are all out of town or very busy, so what else is a guy to do?
They actually had all of the hippie stuff I wanted, but it wasn't very complicated hippie stuff- just tea and juice. Sometime tomorrow morning these things will arrive at my door. It wasn't cheap, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Somebody bring Owls some soup!
I too would like to hear of who are the good health insurance people. Fudge has never had it in his life and now his parents have a very basic plan. We have nothing.
I have always felt super conflicted about paying for health insurance. It just doesn't make any sense to me as a Canadian. But as I get older I can't help but worry.
Who is good?
Friends tell me things like "Our plan is great, it only costs $4000 a year." or "Our plan is pretty good, it's $800 a month, but if you have anything that is under $5000, you still have to pay for it.".
I am in disbelief! This is much too close to my yearly earnings!
In Canada if you wake up one morning and have weird bumps on your dick you just go see a doctor right away and they give you a prescription that you may have to pay for depending on your income. In the United States if you have weird bumps on your dick you worry, spend time online trying to figure it out, worry some more, maybe look online again, try not to think about it, and then go to the emergency room when your dick explodes.
I have been uninsured for years, and I always thought I will likely die out as an old punk (54, no teeth, diabetic, mood disorder madness). But now that I found my special love man I kinda want to live.
*i've decided to run for office

insurance is when you give some people money all the time so when you need a bunch of money they got you covered because everyone is giving them money all the time so they can handle it. but then in reality they never really want to give you any of it and they work back end deals with the people who repair you/your car/your stuff and then they take the money we all give them and lobby the government into mandating we continue to give them money
its a perfect system
if you dont like it you obviously hate capitalism
What sucks is that they changed the prescription plan in August (without telling me). The pills I get went from $15/mo to $86/mo.
Good luck with 'The Future of Music' advisors. I have tried national level directories and group purchasing options of various sorts but they haven't produced a more affordable deal for me than this LifeWise option. (WiseEssentials6 There's a price list somewhere on the site.)
Note that there is a categorical difference between 'catastrophic' coverage and (I think it is called) 'comprehensive' coverage. Any time you have a break of (I think it is 90 days, maybe 60) in 'comprehensive' coverage, new insurance services have the option to exempt you from coverage for 'pre-existing' conditions, basically anything that you have had previous treatment for. This could be scary for some people.
The plan I'm on is the cheapest 'comprehensive' plan I could find in WA. You might check that out while also pursuing the options that Kevin's employer might find for you.
Obamacare will finally start helping us in 2014. Until then we are at the mercy of the wolves.
I have really crazy alarmist view of insurance because my mom is always pointing out that if I broke my leg or something our family could scrounge the money together to pay for it but if I got cancer "we'd be ruined." Crazy to think of going literally hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt if you got cancer. Also crazy though to imagine just being like "well that's it my time to die" and you're only 35 or whatever and the technology does exist to save you, you just can't afford it? Weird world.
horrible stuff
HOWEVER, PLEASE NOTE: They first denied my application based on a pre-existing condition. I had to write them back and call them etc. etc. and say, "Listen, that's stupid." It worked! They gave me coverage.
THAT'S INSANE, FLOSSY.
Here's to not falling off ladders!
I don't get sick very often but it really does give me peace of mind to know that if I do I can go to the doctor without sacrificing some other basic need- groceries or whatever. The number of uninsured people in our country, including so many of my homies, is supremely depressing. I really hope Obama gets reelected and that Obamacare has a chance to play out and win over a majority of the skeptics. Romney victory basically means it gets overturned/reversed right?
Part of the workaday press.... Less people doing more work means employers have more the power, less incentive to pay out and retain bodies. I would love to verify my hunch that temp agencies are doing well despite the downturns--temps are cheaper than hiring in-house. The workforce will continue its contraction and become more white, straight, and male. Also young. It is recommended that the ladies wear nylons and contouring makeup if they want to impress men--you know, the bosses.
Likely there isn't a budget for two additional "regular" positions and so they've augmented the office with two "on-call" positions (clearly much cheaper!) to handle the work load. The organization isn't trying to be an asshole, it's trying to get as much work done as it can with the resources it has. Have some sympathy, corporations are people too!
