Video Games

edited July 2011
I bought a Wii a month ago, and I haven't owned a system of my own in about 4 years, and even then it was an original nintendo.
What up gamers? What game should I get? I'm out of the loop.
Also
how about video games?
Final Fantasy 3 (American Version) forever!
Did anybody read Nintendo Power back in the day? Somewhere in my parent's attic I still have a copy of the second issue ever.

  • There should be a video game about video games where like if you catch anyone playing video games they lose, or win, or something.

Sorry. I forget 'meta' is not 'helping'.

    My brother plays video games.

I got kind of obsessed with this for a kind of unhealthy amount of time. The music is like medicine.
  • I haven't had a system since original Nintendo either, and then for christmas my old man got me......AN ORIGINAL NINTENDO!!!

It has been so much fun. Getting into Zelda for the first time! Stuff like that.

Hell yes I read Nintendo Power back in the day!!!!!!

So my point is I have no recommendations for you. I've literally never even seen a Wii
  • Is there Dr. Mario or Tetris for the Wii? Those are good games. That tennis one is pretty fun.
  • One of the best games I've ever played is called "Game Dev Story" and it's a simulation of running a video game company. It's on the iPhone, you should buy it.
  • All the Mario games for Wii totally rule and demonstrate the possibilities of the platform.

Paper Mario is a beautiful little adventure/RPG game. The design conceit is that Mario switches between 2D and 3D. Both worlds are beautifully rich and full. It's not too hard, not too easy. Nintendo gets that Mario is for everyone... it's cute, but also challenging and rewarding.

Mario Galaxy is a total wii mind****. It takes the reality of the two controllers as far as it can. The design conceit is that each level takes place on a different planet. The planets are relatively small so you go all around them, like The Little Prince's home comet. There is this one level in particular that will go down as one of the most psychedelic experiences of my life. You're on this small water planet and you have to kill 3 huge eels. They're so huge that they cross each other in their travels, swimming over this tiny water planet. The 3D and subjective scale of everything totally f***** by brain.

On the Wii you can download emulators, so if you like cute and clever adventure/RPGs you HAVE TO GET THE MOTHER SERIES FOR NES. Search Mother 2, Mother 3, and Earthbound. I played Earthbound on a Wii and it was so awesome. Because the processors for NES and Wii are so different, you can speed up anything you are playing through the NES emulator. No more waiting through the tedious orchestration of a multi-player battle.

Portal is a kick-ass puzzle game. You are in a weird robotic testing facility. You have to try to get out. The design conceit is that you zap in- and out-portals in each room. You make a portal you go in, and another one you go out of. You go in through the in portal and hope that you put your out portal in the right place. It's scary without being about war.
  • I ENJOY VIDEO GAMES

currently doing a lot of 'Picross 3D' on the DS at 'work'.
  • I want to play all those things Loose Thread mentioned, and now I am addicted to DrJ's bubble game.
  • I back Loose Threads words.

Also, I had fun with Elebits.

Also, Wario Ware Smooth Moves is SO FUN.
  • If I have a "Old School NES Party" at my house in Portland will you guys come
What if I make home-made pizza
What if I have pizza wine

    I'll go to that

    grease-covered controllers

a pepperoni hanging limply from the top of the tv
  • "there was rompin', and stompin', an occasional crash
a fistfight or two and nintendo for cash"
  • I enjoy my Microsoft Xbox ThreeHundredSixty Machine!

    Never thought I'd say that.

    LA NOIRE IS SO COOL
  • can we do the thing where we share our "gamertags"?

    360 ~ apromisemade
    let's play things
  • want to play la noire so bad but
i have so much work to do

every mario game is awesome. if i had a nintendo that is all i would play.

i'm really into swords and sorcery rite now on the iphone. i think it would be better on the ipad coz bigger but i like the 8bit and awesome music. im also really good at hipster city cycle on iphone except i don't think it's possible to beat any of the speed trials.

i saw a funny comic on reddit or something and it was like doctor says "hey guy, check out this awesome virtual reality machine its the best and most advanced ever" and then guy is like "ok, cool!" -does some video game virtual reality stuff- says "i'm bored" finds a nintendo classic and starts playing mario in virtual world. i had a few lulz
  • @owls bubble2 is even more drifty.

Did you know there is a hilarious Christian knockoff of Wolfenstein 3D called Super Noah's Ark 3d?

I would totally come to a nintendo party.
I would come even more to a nintendo and pizza party. <--awkwardly worded

I bought a cheapo baseball game when I first got the wii and hurt my back playing it. I bought a wii initially because they are cheap now and they stream netflix on TVs.

I just borrowed Super Mario Galaxy and the newest Zelda and HOLY SHIT THAT MARIO GAME IS WILD!! I also just found out that they made a Katamari game for wii. I only played the original Katamari a few times at a friends house, but I loved it. Does anyone know if the one for wii is any good?

Edit: I guess the Wii Katamari was scrapped and never actually made. Sucky.

also, if there is going to be a nintendo party you might consider getting Bubble Bobble, and/or TMNT: The arcade game, and/or Double Dragon 2, and/or Contra.

I also had an unhealthy obsession with a flash game for a while.

You can make your Dolphin jump so high that it reaches the restaurant at the end of the universe. No joke. That's what happens. I've never gotten that high though.
  • I had several christian nintendo games. One was definitely called bible adventures.

  • Dinocast Gary did a podcast about them that was pretty great

  • wolfenstein = too scary

    i love the door conceit

there are a series of closed doors to every room
the door represents the time it takes for the computer to draw the next room

the doors are analogous to curtains of stage play

each blood bath which ensues is but a scene full of players.
  • @Lip_Glossary 's post

Back in the olden days before the 4loko prohibition act, I went to a wildly succesful N64loko party and a bunch of us dudes got all hopped up on the bad decision juice and played some 007. was fun, would play again.

  • Wait, WHAT? Noah's Ark 3D? Do you kill the animals with a slingshot? Noah DID NOT do that. Amazing.
  • Wait, was Noah's Ark real?

  • edited July 2011
"Do you kill the animals with a slingshot?"
Even better. You have to feed them to satiate their homicidal urges.
Otherwise you get killed by demon giraffes.
I think this is biblically and historically accurate.
  • I would come to an NES party AND I would bring my NES and all my games! We could have two machines going at once, bros! Plus pizzas!
  • edited July 2011

    only with pizza and wine
  • I find this scene to be frustrating because they don't get the extra lives and whistles and such. I have intense muscle memory of this game.

omg that makes me so happy..... i used to play games that used ascii characters and they were some of the most satisfying universes i have ever lived in. the little tiny grid of glyphs has such an elemental power. everything blinks in this hectic way. your little smiley face rearranges the grid as you travel, a sense of flow and continuity is just barely hanging by a thread.

there was this whole genre of games that i found in weird AOL file areas. remember that? AOL would just have weird file areas, arranged by file type, in chronological order of the time they were uploaded? you would download like the engine for this type of game, and then players would make their own version. you'd have to try 100's and 1 or 2 would be any good. did anyone else play these?

also remember LORD aka legend of the red dragon? it was a bbs game, text only. ind of alighthearted take on MUD aka multi user dungeon. By Seth Able Robinson. Well LORD2 was this type of ascii game and it was as good as zelda and mario. Beautiful maps of ascii glyphs that you travel through with your little smiley guy. That was an amazingly complex adventure game.
