Cell Phone Discussion

edited June 2011
Is there anyone in the world but me who is sort of attracted to the idea of cutting down on cell phone usage, like, a lot?

like maybe even to the point of getting a landline and having the cell only for emergencies?

CNN just announced officially that cell phones give you hella cancer. So much stuff in our shitty world gives us cancer, I kind of feel like, is the celly really worth it? I enjoy it, but is it REALLY necessary to my life?

Could switch to an iPod touch or something...something with email but no celly vibes

but then I realize I don't know what is the cancer-causer in the scenario. Does wireless internet also cause cancer? Surely it must, right?

Anyway, does anyone even still have a landline? What would your life look like, if you switched back to landline? It would be hilarious and retro. How does it even work? I don't remember. Seems like you would miss a lot of last-minute stuff and meeting places and funny texts, but maybe you'd get used to it? I certainly miss the feeling of talking for hours on a landline instead of my shitty burning-hot tiny little celly.

In my memory landline is prohibitively expensive but that was 10 years ago

Jesus has it really been 10 years

time flies you guys

  • Everything in modern society seems to cause cancer. But it also doesn't. But also it does. http://www.jonbarron.org/alternative-cancer/historic-growth-rates-of-cancer
"We also know quite convincingly, and all nonsensical prehistoric arguments aside, that the incidence of cancer has increased dramatically over the last century."

I mean, it's probably wise to do most things in moderation rather than in excess. Obviously using cell phones less will most likely be better for you than using them more. I hate talking on the phone anyway, so I only have it next to my head for a couple of minutes max every day. I would hate to have a landline. I prefer texting and "online chatting" to phone talking.

However, the WHO study says "possibly carcinogenic to humans." Which is much different than saying "cell phones give you hella cancer".

Here's a couple of dissenting viewpoints:
    http://bobpark.physics.umd.edu/WN11/wn052011.html
"Caller: do you use a wired earphone? BP: No. Caller: would it be too much trouble? BP: No. Caller: Wouldnt you be safer? BP: No. Caller: How do you know? BP: Quantum physics; all cancers are caused by mutant strands of DNA. Electromagnetic radiation can't create mutant strands of DNA unless the frequency is at or higher than the blue limit of the visible spectrum the near-ultraviolet. The frequency of cell phone radiation is about 1 million times too low."

    http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2011/06/01/why-im-still-not-worried-about-my-cell-phone-hurting-my-brain/
"You may also wish to note what other things are categorized as Group 2B possible carcinogens, including gasoline, pickled vegetables, and (GASP!) coffee."

Also, some people who smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day live to be 100, while some people who live super healthy lifestyles die randomly and unexpectedly in their 40s. UNFAIR!

I guess the moral of my story is:
    1) We will all die, sooner or later.
    2) Hopefully we won't get cancer.
    3) Try to live a healthy lifestyle as much as possible, but don't have any less fun because of it.
    4) I don't like talking on the phone very much anyway.
  • Shred harder.
  • If you take up smoking it will cancel out cell phones.
  • these are great points.

i think i am just sick of talking on a cell phone, and would prefer a landline, but am too broke to have both.

good calls on dying and cancer, for sure
  • CNN DECLARES!

I don't talk on the phone near enough to be concerned by this.
It starts to become an issue after 30 minutes of daily talking for 10 years. I talk on the phone like once a week.

Why do you prefer talking on a landline?

  • I like the weight of a landline phone. I like to tuck it between my ear and shoulder while I stir a pot or whatever. Cell phone is too small and slips off my shoulder when I try to do that. Also I always worry that people can hear me breathing on the cell phone so I hold it too far from my face and then people can't hear me. Also I feel rushed to get off the phone when I'm on my cell (minute concerns maybe?) in a way that I don't on a land line.

    I love a land line.
  • exactly! plus cell phone sounds horrible, not clear at all.
Love the feel of a landline. Love the clear close sound of the voice. Love tucking it under my chin while cooking.

I have talked on cell phones for hours and hours a day, many days. Long distance relationship for three years. I can't even bear thinking about how many hours straight I have had my cell pressed against my face. GOD
  • i wish people driving cars and trucks would keep off their cellphones

    more landlines/less cellphones would help
  • Have you guys talked on one of those "cordless style" landline phones in the last 10 years. When I go to the home of my parents I will sometimes call my sister on one.
They sound infinitely worse than a cellphone! I can't even believe what they sound like.

All of these problems are solved with one word: BLUETOOTH! Slip your ear device on and inside your ear and make dinner, prance around unfettered (cord free), look cool, and feel cool, and don't get cancer of the face. BT!

You guys should ditch cellphones and get landlines! Go for it. Why not!? Get an answering machine! It will be cool. Get what you want.
  • huge answering machine with cassette tape in it

    "nobody's home! nobody's home!" (tune of beethoven's 5th)
  • I wanted to look into getting a land line, too. Let me know what you find out!
  • "Hello, I love you won't you tell me your name. Hello, I love you leave your name and number. And I'll get back to you soon. Please leave your name and number."
    (It's a Doors song)
  • I'm thinking about giving up my cell phone for Skype when I get a ChromeBook.

    ; - )
  • i had a landline and answering machine in college and i would sing and play music and come up with awesome sub 20 second skits that were awesome.

but now i have an iphone with angry birds and a drum machine.

  • I used to put vast segments of audio from monty python movies on Katy's and my answering machine. Everyone hated it but I didn't care and still don't care.

    "Old woman!"
    "Man!"
"Sorry, man. Who lives in that castle?"
    "I'm thirty seven."
    "What?"
"I'm thirty seven, I'm not old."
"Well I can't just call you 'man.'"
    "You could say 'Dennis'"
"I didn't know you were CALLED 'Dennis.'"
"Didn't bother to find out, did you?"
"I did say sorry about the old woman, but from behind you looked, well..."
"What I object to is that you automatically treated me like an inferior."
    "Well I AM king..."
"Oh king, eh, very nice, and how'd you get then? By exploiting the working class," etc.

MUCH LONGER THAN THIS, on my machine

get ready for more of this

when i get my new machine

    BEEP
  • who's that then?
    must be a king.
    why?
he hasn't got shit all over him.
  • my favorite went
(sound of writing-i used a closed sharpie on a notebook)"dear caller, i really appreciate the time you spent calling me. Unfortunately I'm not around right now but I will be more than happy to get back to you when I get this message. Please leave a message at th-*beep*"
and i knew i had it when there was a pause at the beginning, as if they were so captivated by the soothing sound of writing and being told a story of a letter to them.

ah, answering machine messages i wish i had recorded.
  • I have a land line and I have never had a cellphone.
Right now I am paying $49 dollars a month for the line, unlimited phone calls to Canada and the U.S. any time of day or night, caller ID, answering machine and call waiting.
I don't know how expensive this is if you compare it to a cellphone.
I think I have never developed in the same way a lot of people have. Not having had a cellphone makes me really into talking to good friends for a long time in the same way I did as a teenager. My phone tells me how long the phone has been in use so I know that I use it between 45 and 90 minutes at least once a week.
I love talking on the phone while doing stuff, whether it's working or cooking dinner, doing laundry, or sweeping. I love the feeling of focusing hard on the conversation and realizing a household task has been accomplished by the time I hang up.
I have caller ID because I don't like picking up the phone when I'm busy and it's not a good time to talk. The phone doesn't ring that much. It's fine. It's just that sometimes I am in my work zone or in the mood to be silent.
The sound quality of my cordless phone is kind of shitty. I am hoping to get a better one soon.
The quality of conversations with loved ones who are on a cellphone can also be shitty. Some people are really good at it, but others have too much going on around them to really talk to you. I don't like talking to people when they are already with people.
I have noticed that this is improving. It seems like a lot of people don't pick up the phone when they can't talk. As a friend of cellphone users, I love it when cellphones are ignored. Like, when you're at the beach, you're at the beach. Or when you're watching a movie, you're watching a movie.
But I have to admit that if I am home having a conversation with you and the phone rings, I might pick it up.
  • TC: i've been leaving my cel in other rooms and at home lately just coz
  • Making a phone call when there are chores to do is such a good life hack!
  • I don't make phone calls. Less than once a week.
  • Main problem with phone calls - you can't link to stuff.
  • I love a long phone conversation. LOVE IT.
Maybe it's because I grew up without a phone, and didn't have a phone until college? so then I was so excited to actually get to do the thing every other normal teenager had been doing for like 7 years at that point--lay in bed and talk on the phone forever omgggg!!!! I still love the phone even after all this time.

Joey one question--the last time Gary had a landline he got an unacceptable amount of spam calls. Like 10 a day. How do you keep this from happening?????
  • Ten a day?
    That's crazy.
I actually can't remember when the last time I got a "spam" phone call was.
For a while these people who collect stuff to sell to value village were calling every two days or something. I told them to take me off their list and they have never called again since.
I guess that is what you do. You tell people "Take me off your list.".
I also don't pick up the phone when it looks like that kind of number.
  • now that i know that human society as we know it can not and will not survive for longer than my own lifetime, im pretty cool with just being like fuck it tape two of them cell phones on my face at all times.

but also the guy in the movie COLLAPSE told me that as the energy/food distribution/communication infrastructures gradually start to fail, you will see rolling outages of cell phone networks, and eventually cell phone network collapse, whereas the wired network of telephones will probably be ok

but he also talked about owning gold as if he's gonna live to see the day when fiat currency collapses

  • Don't just say "take me off your list," be sure to add "and put me on your do not call list." If they do the former, they are allowed to add you again if at some point in the future they buy a new list with your name on it. If you do the latter, they may not ever call you again (and you could sue them for violating that if you really wanted to [and could provide proof that you made the request]). Be sure to add your number to the National Do Not Call Registry too.
  • Dis lady on the Max yesterday was talking about getting breast cancer that spread to her brain and how she still smokes two packs a day. She said she considered herself "blessed," which made me wonder if she knew the definition of that word.
  • 2 BLESSED 2 BE STRESSED
