sandwiches

edited April 2011
im considering starting a new project where i surround myself with sandwiches, that is, i make and eat sandwiches every day and if i don't then i draw a picture or i come up with a new sandwich to make. i will eventually blog this, under something funny like whatkindasandwichisthat.com or cestlasandwich.com. i've decided to do this because it has been 220 or so years since the (atmo) most famous earl of sandwich gave the bread x meat collabo a name.

SO what i need from you is a list of your favorite sandwiches

  • Yeah, but what is the definition of a sandwich?
I mean, is a hot dog a sandwich?
  • edited April 2011
good question: "something edible surrounding something else edible" is what im going to go by. there's a pretty exhaustive wiki page on sandwiches and i'm planning on doing some classics, some fusion, ancients, and neo-wich where i try to make things that will "push the limits" of sandwich definition.
  • ps i edited that definition 3 times.
  • i'm opening a can of worms cause our own KmikeyM has hosted this debate often in the past few years and its proven to be fairly contentious!
  • i know, are tacos or burritos sandwiches? chapattis? sushi rolls? i think it could be boiled down to 2 different edibles (they could be the same thing prepared differently) that is primarily eaten with 2 hands, but there are so many definitions and i need an excuse to try to learn how to make an awesome website. sandwiches seem like a good subject. i like sandwiches.
  • and as soon as i get it started (TBD, but end of this month) you and all are more than welcome to be guests in sandwich manufacture and appreciation.
  • vegan BLT w avocado
    classy grill cheese
cran/temp/avo sammy from that place in Boise
  • Hell yes on the veggie/vegan BLT with avocado. DC Veggie does a great one.

    good quick sandwich:

    spinach
    red onion
    mushrooms
mozza or provalone (maybe a little feta if you've got it)
    little bit of pasta sauce
    potato bread
    toasted up grilled cheese style

    Pizza Sandwich!

  • i was always under the belief that 2 pieces of pizza face-2-face was a pizza sandwich, but i understand your logic.
  • Burger is a sandwich.
  • cheeseburger is an awzm sandwich
  • Is a pita pocket a sandwich? Probably? What about a gyro? Or is that a taco? Or is a taco a sandwich?
  • questions that may never be answered. delicious delicious questions.
  • "something edible surrounding something else edible"
  • What a beautiful complex, troublesome situation arises when you try to define the exact parameters of the common sandwich. As various definitions arise they produce considerable subsequent problems... A true can of worms where the scientific desire to categorize fails to capture the inherent truthful definition of how we see the sandwich. We must abandon science in this case and turn to poetry. For the sandwich is the realm of the artist. Eat fresh.
  • bookhouseboyP, I read something once about a tea-based buddhist/zen (?) practice of reduction in which you start by drinking hot water for a week, then add one tea leaf, then one more, etc., etc., until you have a full appreciation of the tea.

What if you start with just bread. Then add a single condiment. Then an ingredient. Then one more. All in order to gain a full understanding of the sandwich as a whole. Different breads, different mustards, different kinds of lettuce but all the "same" sandwich? The mind reels at the possibilities of sandwich exploration.
  • so, zen sandwich = air between 2 slices of wonderbread?
  • good one. i'll add you as a collaborator on that one
  • air = +/- enlightenment
  • grilled cheese
    fresh mozz/pesto
    FRIED BOLOGNA
  • I always love a good sandwich discussion.

The Merrill Quandary has led to many a great party conversation as we introduce this argument to an increasing circle of new friends. "Ah, yes. But then is a taco a sandwich?" CLASSIC MERRILL PARRY. This Quandary has been attempted by physicists the world over yet never solved. Its beauty is in its inscrutability, like a snake eating its own tail, or like a mobius strip.

One of my sub-arguments I am embroiled in with the Merrill himself is that I believe one of the definitions of a sandwich involves how it is eaten--by two hands, held some distance apart, but horizontally.

    "Sandwich is as sandwich does."

  • Is there a limit to the amount of things in between the bread? RE:

  • ^^^ just saw two guys complete this last night, btw

    puke bucket remained empty
  • Not into gluttony competitions. I don't think it matters how much is in there.

Sandwich is an English word(cmon debate me). Taco, chapatti, Etc are up for intelligent discussion as to their role in the sandwich soap opera in which to love, hate, and have amnesia about.

    This thread is so derailed
    HOW DERAILED IS IT

I just want a list of damn sandwiches
  • P.s. Just signed a retired subway sandwich artist to my resident professionals. Might have a wikileaks style review of the employee handbook. BRING ON THE C&Ds.

  • I submit a vote for the humble PB&J

you don't want it that often, but when you do, it's solid as a rock

gluttony competitions : another vote for them being gross and immoral
  • TC/spoiler: my 99 y.o. great grandmother has made jellies and jams for my entire life and i was going to have a feature with her. Hopefully I can get her to make one for me like she used to, with the crust cut off.
  • My favorite sandwich (I think):

Grilled cheese on 100% rye bread (homemade, bought the rye berries, made flour, used our rye sourdough starter), with real cheese (like gruyere or something else delicious), with pickled jalapenos (jalapenos from the farmers market, pickled last summer), some garlic, made with homemade delicious very yellow butter (with the most real cream you can find, probably came in a glass bottle, probably have some rosemary and thyme in it too), cooked in a cast iron skillet.
  • WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW

I'M COMIN TO YOUR HOUSE FOR LUNCH

  • yea

    matthew

so you looking for some blog coverage of your supreme grilled cheese curation? y/n?
  • I'm pretty fond of:

    PB & banana
Tuna melts with sharp cheddar or good gruyere
Grilled cheese with chutney or caramelized onions
Sharp cheese and homemade relish (ask me for my green tomato relish recipe!)
  • fred, how did you learn to can/pickle without dying of botulism?
Did you learn from a book or a person?
Also, do you pickle/can in such a way that you can re-use jar lids? How did our great-grandmothers do it this way? Parrafin? I'm so confused

  • pickles are easy. get some salt and some water and veggies, one of those giant pots with boiling water.
dont know how to reuse lids unless you ... reuse the lids.

  • @NICK THAT IMAGES JUST SHOWED UP. WHERE DID YOU FIND IT?!
  • I remember reading about it a while ago.
Thought it seemed like something your "Subway insider" would know about.
    Breakthrough in cheese technology.
  • i havent actually met up with the guy to talk to him about working with a sandwich factory and how assembling ingredients to a set of standards makes one an artist.
  • wow, that cheese placement image is intense! speaking of cheese has anyone visited the Tillimook Cheese Factory? if you are driving through the area it is well worth a stop.

i am still hung up about this 'what is a sandwich' dilemma. two slices of bread + some food thing in the middle = sandwich.

my favorite easy homemade sandwich with no fancy ingredients = spinach, cheese, tomato, horse-radish, brown mustard. toast it up on a cold day. delicious.
  • The right pickle can really *MAKE* a quick non-fancy home sandwich.

    I really love these:

  • Pickle and Peanut Butter Sandwich. Sounds gross, but don't knock it 'til you try it.
  • i think that one might get the "exotic" or "what would elvis eat" tag

also, met a girl last night writing a book about sandwich history.
  • Get the peanut butter pickle burger at Killer Burger if you like that. I actually prefer it with the veggie patty, even though I eat reglr burgers.
  • Rimsy, I started canning w/ an experienced friend. Jam and pickles are easy to do safely. Then I used books. Joy of Cooking for example!
