  • Congratulations!
I look forward to the end of slush and ice and ice-mud so I can trundle the ol' two-wheeler out of the basement.

    Today I love
    my dog
    my coffee
that I am just randomly submitting old seminar papers to journals without editing them
    spring being in the air
  • little baby ducks, old pick-up trucks, slow-moving trains, and rain
  • and onions
  • Finding the best coffee in town at the least suspecting place.

my mom, thinking about living in my new place, friends and frienemies, and my jazz history instructor's study guide.

    also David Caruso
  • Nick - WHAT PLACE?
  • Today I love:
Punk rock (esp. Minor Threat and the Descendents)
    Old Built to Spill
    Courier Coffee

    Today I dislike:
Tediously selecting/cutting out portraits of people in Photoshop
  • ^Word on that dislike.
for me it is tediously making detailed vector traces of photos
  • FUGAZI!
    Day of rock.

I love giving thumbs up/thumbs down.

I love putting on your own rabbit hat.

and feeling very thankful for lemons.

  • I love planting seeds! Being very methodical in the beginning- strictly following the rules on the packet- then just tossing the last few down like totally whatever.
  • lucky you! here the ground is still a frozen mucky mess. not that i have any seeds to plant or anywhere to plant them.

I'm currently "planting" the "seeds" of my new article by reading all this crazy film theory. Reading film theory is funny because you're like "THAT'S NOT WHAT THAT SCENE IN CITIZEN KANE IS ABOUT!!!!!!"

I just read a review of the film I'm writing about in which I feel the author gets every single thing wrong.

SUBJECTIVITY IN PERCEPTION OF THE ARTS

    IS WHAT I LOVE TODAY

  • Today I still love coffee.
And I'm getting really deep into Grandaddy.
Seriously, such a good band. Such a band of the late 90s/early 00s. Plus they were skateboarders. "Skateboarding saves me twice."
  • Alex,
    Are you Tracey Emin?

I loved that piece you made with your bed and the condoms and stuff.

    ALSO, GREAT NEON WORK!

  • today I love Dear Sugar, on The Rumpus. I followed someone's random fb link and got sucked into reading all of the entries, I am in awe of Sugar's life and how she got to where she is and how she approaches things. Here is a good example:

also alas damascus gay girl had to go into hiding, and her dad left syria. still an amazing story though.
  • My mom.
I love her all the other days too.
Last week I got sick and she surprise rush shipped me vitamins, coughdrops, and tea.
    She's the best.
  • lets hear it for moms! My mom is amazing also.

Today in addition to my rad mom, I love:
    - espresso over ice: it's finally iced espresso weather!
    - my regular bout of insomnia has, for now, passed
    - trying to make my dog swim in a pond

  • gay girl in damascus has been written by a 40 year old American man living in Scotland!?!

Things that make you go hmm

Could "Urban Honking" be fake too???
    Who is "Steave Shrader" anyways?????????????
  • I want to know shay shay's reaction to the damascus thing, since she introduced me (and others here, I bet) to the blog.
  • Maybe G.G. is still somehow real... like Scout Finch.
  • It was a big bummer, actually. I only read that entry I posted here, and thought it was so amazing and inspiring, but alas it's a white dude from wisconsin fighting "neo-orientalism" (which btw dude, prolly Edward Said would like to have some words with you). I am a gullible person! Now I def suspect "Gary", also "Stumptown Coffee", and that arduino hack for my new smartphone that Sarah McD gave me was pretty sketchy too, come to think of it....
  • Such a bummer.
  • It is all Gary's fault.
  • Ban his pod.
  • In other news, today I love my mom, my boyfriend, the city of Portland, my friends, coffee, the internet, and most especially all of those people out there (like you!) who are trying to live authentic lives of meaning and grace.

Life is short people, and there's nothing like hearing that an sweet awesome kid you've watched grow up, just died tragically, a few hours before his high school graduation, to really make that fact sink in.

    balmy weather
    stormy afternoons
    my new cutoff shorts
the brandy snifter my aunt gave me for graduation that has my name and "Dr. PhD" engraved on it
    life
    being alive
    love
    peacefulness
    charity
    gentleness
the good side of humankind being there even with all the bad sides
    moving to pdx
    tarot cards
  • I've been in the woods for a week so pardon me for not knowing this already ZA, but what job did you get?! That is awesome!! I am very happy for you and can't wait to learn about it!
  • a one-semester job teaching a core freshman western civ-type class at our alma mater!
    SO COOL FOR ME
  • I KNOW JUST THE CLASS YOU MEAN!!
    SO COOL FOR YOU!!!!
    Congratulations!!
  • it's different (better) than when we took it, though. Remember how weird that class was? Like "what is this class, even?" Now it's just, like, The Bible and Sigmund Freud. "WESTERN THOUGHT."

I'm excited! Also scared--I'VE NEVER READ THE BIBLE
  • I heard that everyone who reads that book dies mysteriously, and burdened to spread the curse throughout man kind
