Why no porch swing, Gary? I really like that first one ekjiram posted.
Maybe you need a little booster for your chairs to see over the wall? And/or grow some cute little plants or creeping vines or something along the inside of the wall so it's nice to look at?
Maybe these ideas are dumb. I just like thinking about it so much and it's not even my house!
Gary says porch swing is only good for one person. I disagree but he has been unusually vehement. He says if two people sit on it it's awkward. First of all, I don't think he's right, but second of all, even if only one person sits on it, what's the problem??? We'll see if I can sway him
No electricity, no water, $50k cash, really cool lil architect-built cabin.
Anybody want to time share? It can't be rented out cause it's on Forest Service land. We're thinking about looking at it on Sunday and trying to get 4 or 5 people to pitch in $10k each.
UrHo Tech Free Retreat Center?
Could probably also rent it out on the down low to friends...
Zach has since turned the large chunk of land he bought into a dreamy forest wonderland with other cabins and a modern bunkhouse (with all amenities). More here: http://www.beaverbrook.com
Private property sucks it's true. We just heard about this situation in our area where because of the projected location of the keystone pipeline, a bunch of homes have been suddenly made worthless, because they're in the "impact area" of the pipeline. So now not only can the homeowners not sell their houses (they are effectively ruined, financially), but their homeowners' insurance refuses to cover them. So, since you are legally required to have homeowners' insurance to live in a house, they also can no longer live in their houses.
no compensation from the gas company. apparently this is all legal and above-board, in American-style capitalism!! This shit would NOT fly in Scandinavia, I bet!!!!!!

UBS you're not stupid! Owning house is totally same as owning land, w/r/t private property...I think, anyway! I do think it is crazy to own a house and not the land the house is on. I don't even get it. Are you allowed to have a garden? If the people who own the land don't want the house on the land anymore, how does that work? Just seems like a weird nightmare
also I should note that you can't do "whatever you want with the land" in a lot of circumstances. Only if you own land that is super rural can you really have ultimate freedom, although even then you can't do certain things.
we just looked at a little house that was on a double lot, and we were like, cool, maybe you could build a second little house on the second lot, and use it for office space, but that's not allowed. There are all kinds of zoning regulations where even in a normal home-ownership situation (i.e. not a condo) you can't do whatever you want! You can't own roosters, etc.
MY PERSONAL LIBERTIES ARE INFRINGED UPON AT EVERY TURN YET STILL I RAIL AGAINST COMMUNISM AND NORWAY
Yeah, the accessory dwelling laws are interesting. They're currently trying to change some of the ADU regulations in Portland to make them more relaxed to help with the housing crisis, cause if people can build tiny/small houses in their backyards more easily, it'll be easier to increase the housing supply without knocking down existing structures.
I wonder if a tiny house on wheels would get around that double lot building rule?
I think so! I think I've read about this--that it's one way of getting around zoning laws. Putting your tiny house on wheels, which technically makes it a "trailer" and not a permanent structure. Hmmm, that's a good idea!
on the one hand I totally am glad there are restrictions, so someone can't come along and build some insane monstrosity right next door, or build some gnarly rental situation that increases traffic/noise/whatever....but also GOD, it would sure be nice to be able to putz around on your own land and add whatever features you wanted. That's interesting about the housing crisis...I wonder how they can relax those laws without making it legal for everyone to build 8-story condos on their property??
The ADU requirements have to do with % of sq. ft. of main dwelling, I believe.
Owning on Forest Service land:
"All modifications to the cabin or lot, including but not limited to changes to roofs, siding, windows, doors, decks and porches and outbuildings, including paint color must be authorized in writing by the Forest Service before implementation. The authorization process takes from a couple of weeks to a couple of months depending upon the proposed alteration and the workload of Forest Service personnel."
"Including paint color."
I appreciate that, though! I don't want hot pink houses dotting my beautiful forest landscape!
One thing I hit upon recently was the rule about how close you can build to your neighbor's property line. I got all excited about the idea of building off the side of my house to create a truly separate entrance for the basement, but then realized you have to have FIVE FEET between building and property line. It makes sense, of course, but it's a bummer.
omg I have so much shit to do (syllabi, etc.) but all I can do is research house shit!!!!! Currently just spent a full hour researching "new england perennials that are good for bees" which led to rabbit hole involving "how to build your own garden cloche"
also "make your own cool pot rack"
bought coasters on etsy
looking for dream coffee table to use coasters on
mapping my commute over and over again
nervously researching lead paint disclosures
the inspection is today, we are nervous!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck and welcome to the club! Recently researched: why did my cauliflower turn purple? (it's not the kind that's supposed to be purple) Solution found, second cauliflower plant not turning purple!
Question for folks who have recently bought or are in the buying process in Portland:
Is it even possible to buy with an FHA loan anymore? I have a friend who's considering a home purchase but this would be her only option, and I just have no idea if she stands a chance (especially since she's looking for something around $300-$350k).

Porch Couch can also be a genre of music, like "boots pants" but through a flange pedal and fuzzbox.
Gary is definitely wrong, and I have many fine memories of porch swing hangouts.
Those hanging pods are a good compromise tho.

FUN AND COOL
I'm stupid.
If private property is stupid why would I own a house but not land. House seems like same as land.
I think you can own land and not be an asshole about it. It would be nice to be able to build other stuff on your land if you wanted.

Talking about yourself as a client is pretty funny.

I just figured out that the washing machine we were gonna get won't actually fit in the alcove thingy.
Is it crazy to have a hybrid laundry room/office?
