Winter Storm Jasmine-Forsythe

  • I am truly spoiled by the mild weather on the West Coast, but is at least ONE DAY of snow too much to ask?
  • Sorry to turn this into "weather complain thread" but my house is actually shaking in the wind right now and today's high is "feels like 2 degrees" !!!!

    8-X

    ~:>
  • It's real windy here too! Nice and sunny, though, and a balmy 14 degrees although it also "feels like" 2.

Oops, just checked weather.com and see that there is another winter storm alert, this one for Winter Storm Linus (did they name it that because of blankets (of snow)?).

although, the alert is for northeastern mass so maybe 'tis once again no big deal for yours truly?

I am enjoying this brisk weather. I have an extremely big long wool hooded coat, a full woolen head-cloak thing that covers my head, face, neck, and shoulders, and gigantic warm boots. I am surprised every time I step outside by how warm my get-up keeps me, although it does decrease my agility. Still, one can't have everything
  • I get cold hands and feet, despite all my gear.
I have a huge down puffy coat that makes me look like a teenage mutant ninja turtle, but keeps a good chunk of me crazy warm.

Still, working from home, aka blankets today!
  • just took snoop for his walk and it was so cold he started limping due to what we call "ice paw"

it's too cold to pack snow into a snowball; it just falls apart. Dry snow!

living in weather that can kill you is weird
  • I saw a dog wearing booties yesterday!!
Hard to imagine wrestling Mr. Snoopy into those but maybe we should try.
  • I looked at pictures of dogs wearing boots for a long time last night.
  • oh great, another storm is happening tonight!
  • that's how our snoop walks if you put socks on him

this storm once again doesn't seem all that insane. It is def snowing out there though.

I wonder what will happen to society if climate change means there are just wild-ass snowstorms all winter. Will we find different ways to commute? Maybe the school will send out horse carriages for all of us. It would take 1,000 horses and my commute would prob be 2 hours long
  • not sure why I thought a horse carriage could get through 2 feet of snow better than a car, sorry everyone
  • this blizz is getting more serious since my last update!
    it's blizzing out out there
the plows plowed the street only 2 hours ago and now the street is completely covered again, looks like several inches

    wild!

a snow day on campus that I don't benefit from as I don't teach today anyway ALAS POOR YORRICK
  • A horse drawn sleigh however...!
  • still, horses can't plow through feet of snow any better than a car can!
it's still snowing like HELL FIRE out there. Gary just shoveled the driveway and it's already covered back up. Plows going by continuously.

If tomorrow is a delayed start to school it will be pretty epic
  • The snow levels are Mt Hood are pretty dire, cause it's been mostly raining up there all winter: http://www.timberlinelodge.com/webcams/

    Look at Govt. Camp!

Give us some of your snow!
  • just went outside for first time today, to walk the dog. It was so much crazier than it seemed from looking out the window! Our sidewalk probably has 2 feet of snow on it and our snow dudes have not come today, so it's basically not a sidewalk. I fell down a bunch of times. Frank just blasts through like a porpoise in the waves. We went to the playground and the snow was knee deep on me / chest deep on him! It was incredible.

When I got home I had to take off my boots, take out my boot liners, take off my socks, AND take off my pants in the mud room because everything was caked with a thick layer of snow

Looks like it's stopped snowing now though

    deep! literally
  • Does everything take a million years to do?
  • edited February 2015
Will climate change chase snowboard bros from Portland?
  • Will I miss their themed vans? (No.)
  • The snowboard bros will just move to kiteboarding in the Gorge or something.
  • I wish I had a snowboard bro here to tow me to school!

ekjiram I don't know if it takes a million years to do everything because I essentially have only left the house to walk the dog. It does seem like everyone has been outside shoveling for hours (I woke up at 5:30 and the shoveling had already started). I am interested to see what traffic is like today. They delayed opening the campus until 10, so I don't have to teach, but I do have to go in for a meeting.

  • currently negative 2 degrees here
  • I'm out of state for a few days... gone south, where the climes are milder.
V happy to not think about snow for a minute.
  • I just sat in the SUN!!!!!
  • Jesus Christ ANOTHER STORM
I'm getting scared they're gonna tack all these snow days onto the other end of the semester. Everyone is talking about it with dread.

    this storm is named MARCUS

  • I know Marcus. Get some batteries.
  • WHO THE FUCK IS MARCUS?
  • I know. I know
  • storm report: so far this storm is more like a "storm"
  • omg ANOTHER SCHOOL DAY CANCELED
    wtf
  • this blizz is serious
    serious blizz situation
    we're getting blizzed out
i'm glad we have leftover lasagna and enough booze
  • oh jeez

I'm in Texas, not super excited to come back and slog through the snow piles.
    :(
  • when are you supposed to come back? I think flights will be fucked for a couple days
  • Not til Wed. night, keeping my fingers crossed that it's ok because I have a 12 hour day of class and TA stuff on Thurs!
  • Oregon update: Still raining; 51 degrees
  • Having a wet winter
  • i just took the dog out. Everyone on the block is out with their intense gas-powered snow blowers, all up and down the street. It's so funny because some people are really conscientious about clearing the sidewalk in front of their house, and other people aren't, so you'll be walking along in 2 inches of snow and then suddenly reach a sheer wall beyond which is exactly one house-length of totally untouched 3-foot-deep snow
  • Have I mentioned the tip about toliet tank water yet?
  • It's 10 degrees outside, so, I don't really know what to do about that.

Off topic, as I was traveling back to this snow-pile of a place I had a window seat and one strange man sitting next to me in the middle. No one had the aisle seat, but he didn't move over! Even after prompting by the flight attendant, he stayed smushed up next to me!
    Verdict: sociopath.
  • Google "frottage"
  • owls that is MADNESS
  • I walked to school and it hurt my skin and body to be outside.

Is the cold madness, or the man who wouldn't move??? BOTH 8-X
  • it is very cold today. I'm about to go to the store and am prepping all my many layers
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
  • yeah it's supposed to dump again today. But I finally said fuck it and came to my coffee shop because I have CABIN FEVER, just like Jack Torrance!!!!

It was -2 when I got in the car this morning. It feels really hostile out there. Taking the dog out to pee last night I kept coughing because the air was too cold for my lungs

More snow days??? And always on Mondays??? It is very weird. I bet they won't call any more snow days, though. They already turned one of our pre-final reading days into a make-up Monday, and they can't do any more without moving finals week. I bet they are regretting all those early snow days and now it will probably snow 10 feet and they'll be screwed.

There is so much snow. It reminds me of childhood in Colorado, back before global warming changed everything! When I was a kid there'd be HUGE mounds in the middle of main street, much taller than a man, with icy trails over them so you could get from one side to the other. It's getting to be like that here. Our street is getting really narrow. The oil men came to refill our oil and Gary shoveled them a nice path. Gary is really on top of his shit lately you guys, HE ALREADY DID OUR TAXES
