Major Briggs, that is fair. No one ever HAS to click on anything, that's America!
FYI, the animal in this video is a hearing impaired marmoset that lives at a Rare Species Conservatory. It's experiencing a transcendent massage via toothbrush. I'm not interested in exotic animals people are keeping in their homes- I realized that by even watching those videos I was contributing to the idea that its ok to do so.
we have thurs/fri off for Thanksgiving obviously. Everyone knows the students all skip class on Wednesday, but we aren't allowed to cancel class, which is very stupid. BUT THEN, apparently some sick snowstorm is rolling into town late tonight, so all of a sudden the school has decided to close early, i.e., to cancel class on Wednesday. This means now all the students are going to skip class on TUESDAY (today) instead.
When only 4 people showed up to my (GRADUATE) seminar, I knew shit was fucked. I checked around, and apparently everyone is canceling afternoon classes today, "because of the storm," which doesn't really even make any sense, but whatever. So I let myself get peer-pressured into canceling class too.
The chimney sweep is coming back by my house today to install a thing up there. The first time he came to my door, I had forgotten about the appointment, and I thought he was a homeless drifter, based on his appearance.
deeply stoked we aren't traveling for thanksgiving!!! Winter Storm Cato is apparently going to fuck everybody hard we'll see! if our power goes out I'm gonna be so bummed
I drove downtown to pick up my new glasses and it had just started snowing, and wasn't sticking. 20 minutes later, driving back, there was an inch on the ground and it was so thick in the air it was hard to see. I arrived home to see Snoop in his jacket, covered with snow, and the old man clearing the garage so we can pull the car in.
We just got some slush down here, and then super cold and sideways rain. Still, I learned that the steep hill I live on is basically impossible to navigate in the freeze and that I might break a bone this winter.
It's 20 right now and while trying to poop the dog got "ice foot" where ice gets stuck between his toes and he looks at me like HUHHHH HELP and I have to scrape the ice off with my hand. Also I forgot a poop bag so I packed snow around the poop and carried it into the bushes. I am a great hero
Today is my last day before Thanksgiving! Because I teach MWF And after learning the hard way several years ago I have sworn never to hold classes the Wed before Thanksgiving So there you have it That's how to turn a 4-day break into a 6-day break and make your students happy in one fell swoop
Today after class... student: "can we meet tomorrow about my paper?" me: "NO"
Remember that TGIF when Mike visited and was shocked by our apple tree? That was fun
For today's TGIF I will go out for a beer. If I grade all my papers tomorrow I will have set myself up for a very nice vacation indeed, filled only with writing a 40-page article about narrative I got commissioned to do. Believe it or not that sounds fun to me
I also have a super-long break! Have truly no Thanksgiving plans, I better buy a potato to mash for me and the cat! Will spend the weekend trying to write my thesis outline aka squeezing blood from a stone!
Celebrated Sharksgiving (yes, YT, that tradition still lives on in my family) with my & Nacho's parents on Saturday. That means that this coming Thursday is a completely free and open day. What should we do with it?!?! (Caveat: must not support the shitty corporate trend of making service employees work on Thanksgiving.)
I have to write about understanding instrumental music narratively (meaning, hearing "plot" or "story" in purely instrumental music), which is a semi-controversial approach in my field. I have to discuss how the idea of interpreting music narratively emerged, who pioneered it and when/why, how the terms and concepts of one discipline (literary theory) can be used to understand music (which after all is not literature), how the method has evolved over the past 3-4 decades, problems/criticisms of it, etc., and then perform a narrative analysis of a symphony I wrote about in my dissertation. I don't know if the person who commissioned it will like it but it's due in March so I really have to get going on it
Freddy, just make pies and chill the f out! I am so excited to do nothing and see no one but my dog/husband, and listen to loud-ass music
Interesting! The idea that some musical works should *not* be interpreted as "narratives" (in the sense you describe) seems absolutely crazy to me! But what do I know.
here is a link to an article on an Onion-esque satire site that is exclusively about classical music. This particular article is making fun of the critical tendency you (rightfully) describe as "crazy"

I think I'll make a Japanese feast, just because.

welcome to my world
it's because of the 19th century, is the short version of the explanation
I agree it is crazy
but also capitalism's fault
which if you think about it is also the root of most of Germany's problems
So like most things it all boils down to capitalism
anyway it's very boring
