Apple advice

edited March 2014
Hey dudes.
My iPad's screen no longer works, and of course, since I bought it a year ago, it's out of warranty (grrrrrr that means this iPad cost me $37 a month).
Replacing this one will cost $299 with a 90 day warranty. A new one costs $500 (if it works a year, that's only $41 a month!).
What should I do?

Comments

  • If you bought it with a credit card, check to see if your credit card doubles the warranty period. Mine doez.
  • My phone started acting up a couple of weeks after my warranty expired and a cool dude at Apple gave me a new one anyway. It's worth checking!
  • Gadget-Fix was able to fix my iPad same-day for only $25. Apple store officially sucks.

If I have a MacBook pro that's still doing fine, just needs a new battery sometime soon, should I invest in a solid state drive?

Is this a good plan for future computing? Or am I supposed to buy a goddamn brand new computer every time one comes out?
  • These things are weird. I bought one in 2003, a new one in 2009, and then another one in 2013. That's about every 5 years. Seems reasonable in terms of keeping up with technology but not overdoing it. Solid state drives are nice though!
  • I'm on board with solid state drives. They're reasonably affordable now and they're a lot more reliable and do make a difference in how fast your computer feels.

I had a 4-year-old Black MacBook (not "Pro") when I started grad school a couple years ago. I wanted to buy a new computer for school, but couldn't afford the $1,300 or so. I upgraded to a solid state hard drive ($200-ish, at the time) instead and it felt like a brand new computer.

Last year I upgraded to a hand-me-down 13" MacBook ($0, circa 2009), but with the SSD, I think I can go another year before getting a new laptop.

Basically, if you don't already have an SSD, upgrading can give you a few more years worth of use, the difference is that dramatic.
  • Cool, thanks!

I figure, it's still running great and the new ones haven't made drastic changes that I feel I need right now.
