Where to eat in SE Industrial

edited December 2013
Hi Friends,

I am doing a new gig in SE Industrial. It is probably short term, but for the next month (at least) I need to know where to eat lunch in the SEiD (is that a thing?).

  • Produce Row Cafe. For dinner, not a casual snack or whatever.

I second Produce Row for lunch, Boke Bowl, Bunk Bar, Side Door Cafe, Nicholas, that cart pod behind Branx, sandwiches at Sheridan's, Robo Taco, Tarad Thai, Olympic Provisions.

Most of these are in/within a 5 minute walk from SEiD.
  • Pacific Pie Co.
  • New Cascadia, F&B cafe in Rejuvenation, Biwa, Tarad Thai, White Owl (opens at 3), Portobello, Los Gorditos, Teote, Lardo, Double Dragon

    ____
  • Bikini Brew
  • Nong's Khao Man Gai is probs close enough
609 SE Ankeny ST Suite B Portland OR 97214
  • All my faves already got named.
  • Jimmy Johns delivers ;)
  • Biwa and White Owl aren't open for lunch. Portobello, Los Gorditos, Double Dragon all not really within walking distance of SEID if you're on foot. I already mentioned Tarad Thai. Sorry Bobby.
  • Jimmy Johns also provides FREE SMELLS
  • Jimmy Johns' owner ALSO shoots beautiful, rare animals, like the guy from GoDaddy :(

  • I just assume Abe uses a segway like the rest of us.
  • oh my god, that makes me sick
  • you guys I HATE produce row. I always want to like it because the ambience is cool but the food is GARBAGE and SO expensive!!! What gives?

I second all these other options. I would eat lunch at sizz pie every damn day if I could

We used to eat at Jimmy Johns in Iowa City because of lack of alternatives and it was horrible and bad and now I am even more ashamed

  • Ate at Produce Row last night and it was cool. Not as good as I remember in terms of menu options, but i got some wild mushrooms that were tasty and somebody else paid, so that helps. Still like.
  • maybe it's a vegetarian issue. I am just really getting to a "fuck you" place with any place that only has 1 or 2 veggie options. Great, another slimy portobello sandwich half-assed upon my plate, I sure don't get enough of those. Freaking $9 salad consisting solely of lettuce?? Gimme break

good drinks though, as a rule, and the service could not be more legit. I don't know.

I am vegetarian and I love their nachos! I would never eat a dinner there for YT's reasons but a nacho happy hour does me just right.
  • hmm never done the nacho happy hour. I'll try that sometime
  • I like their veggie booger. Not the portabello one, the regular one. And their fries are good. But yes, not a lot of veggie options. Isn't it only like $9 for a veggie burger and fries? They have a black bean patty sandwich for lunch for $7. They seem cheaper than a lot of other Portland places. What are you looking for, like an amazing $4 burrito?

  • Produce Row recently updated their menu and it's better.
  • Produce Row is People! IT'S PEOPLE!!!!
  • I love that we're debating this so fiercely!
  • FUCK PRODUCE ROW
  • just kidding, I don't care.
  • Actually, what I am realizing is that it reminds me exactly of an Iowa City restaurant. Where it pretends to be kind of nice but it's literally iceberg lettuce and a garden burger, and it's $12 and yet somehow everyone in town is talking about it like it's so fancy and awesome, because they've never lived in a real city. There I said it. I haven't been there in awhile though and so I am open to being corrected re: the new menu
  • Weirdly I feel like Produce Row is one of Portland's LEAST HYPED RESTAURANTS.
In a town of CONSTANTLY changing food hype and new restaurants every minute Produce Row just seems like a solid standby that's been there for a long time.

    Roasted Cauliflower10
    lentils, eggplant purée, shaved fennel

    Cavatappi Pasta12
    mushrooms, chiles, spinach, parm

I would order both of these entrees in addition to that veg burg

    Kale9
    grapes, smoked feta, lemon vin
    Beet9
    endive, radish, farm cheese, cashews

    ICEBERG? I think not.
  • Let's talk about restaurants for a minute because OMG I had the most orgasmic amazing meal at Grain & Gristle the other week. It was my third time eating there but my first time being 100% blown away by the taste explosions happening in my mouth with the beet salad and the fried squash and the bite of my mom's burger (for the non-veggers). Holy shit. Plus, my mom, dad and I all got fancy cocktails/beers and we ordered several starter plates and each got an entree and the total bill was $78.
  • At least it's not a tiny sliver of "okay" $26 salmon a la Trifecta Tavern THERE I SAID IT
  • I don't want to pay $9 for a veggie burger. There, I said it.
That's right in the range of $$ where I start to want an entree and not a sandwich.

I think I'm just too poor to appreciate medium-priced food... give me burrito, or give me a proper night out where I feel like I had an amazing time and blew my goddamn cash on something cool!
  • It's so fun to run contrary of YT!

What a great foil. She's strident in her beliefs but will bend every once in a blue moon to a well researched opinion.

I was in a car with her last night where she proclaimed ALL PIEs to be garbage because now she has tasted one great pie crust. What a wild way of thinking. This is not unlike her claims that 90% of apples are now garbage cause she has found her fav heirloom apple that is only available for 15 minutes every october.

GREAT THINGS don't make every other quality thing garbage. There is a time & place for many levels of quality.
  • That new produce row menu looks way tight. I stand corrected! Produce Row is the decent honey crisp of portland restaurants. A solid option when better ones aren't available.

Steve is right that I have strident beliefs but I do pride myself on being able to be swayed by reasonable arguments. I stand by my pie statement though. I have yet to eat a decent piece of pie at any restaurant. Would LOVE to be proven wrong.

flossy is there stuff for veggies at that place? It sounds/seems so meaty/neo-portland-meat-fetishizing but again I would LOVE to be wrong on this! I want a delicious meal and cocktail please

In terms of overpriced-for-quality-you-get does anything in this town truly beat Liberty Glass though?? Plus hilariously bad service, almost like that place in NYC where the bad service is a tourist attraction
  • UBS I appreciate how much pleasure you take in contradicting me with facts and logic. Sometimes you win, but sometimes I am right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LIKE BOTH WAYS
  • I should stress that that one girl at Liberty Glass is an amazing waiter. If you go there on her night you'll be ok. On other nights it's like Night of the Living Dead in there am I right
  • I am WITH you on Liberty Glass. I like the space but JEEZ. Also $12 for a tiny, shitty plate of Triscuit Nachos.
  • Yeah, I hate when a meetup at Liberty Glass coincides with dinner time. I'm not a fan of the food or prices.

I think I must have gotten that "one girl" last time I was there, cause she seemed friendly enough.
  • Also, YT, have you tried pie at Twee-twee-twee*? I've never had a slice, but it always looks really tempting.

    *Sweedeedee
  • Sarah, where can you get a good cheap veggie burger in Portland? Seems like $8/9 is standard for veggie burger and fries, which sucks, but even BURGERVILLE is like $8 for a simple combo. ;(
  • Grain n Gristle: not a lot of veggie options, but the ones they have are GOOD. Here you go -

    Fressen pretzel, spicy mustard 3
Warm wheat bread, butter or olive oil 3
House pickles, a fine selection 4
    Olives, in-house 3

Tender farm greens, fresh herbs, champagne vin 5
Charred brussels sprouts, grainy mustard 8
Pear, chicories, dates, walnuts, aged goat cheese vin 8
Fried winter squash, yogurt, chile, pepita, soft herb 7 -->***this one absolutely killed me, so f"cking good

Roasted beets, spiced nuts, arugula, molasses 8 --> also really good
    Freedom fries 4
    Onion Rings 4

    Cheese
    Steve’s Cheese board, a fine selection 10

  • there are pies that are fine, like SDD and random order, but not mind-blowing! Boring crust!!!!! I had a SDD pie that I truly did not like one time, and then the rest have been "fine"

    THERE I SAID IT
  • Yeah, I don't know if you can get below $8 for a veggie burger and fries that isn't gross.
  • G&G seems cool, maybe I will force Gary to take me there for an occasion
  • I think it's an "occasion" kind of place, especially for veggie-peeps since they don't have big veggie entrees. It feels to me like fancy food at a not-super-fancy price.
  • Whoa, I think SDD pies are pretty good. Good crust, homemade whipped cream if you want it.

Alex, I guess I don't get a veggie burger very often? I get one at Dots, which is not super cheap and does not come with fries! But I've been eating the same one for literally 20 years so I'm just attached to it.

    Little Big Burger
    Skyline Burger

I kind of like a veggie burger to just be a cool/good/normal patty with regular burger stuff, not a gourmet experience. Just me though.
  • owls, definitely try the one at Killer Burger then. Note: I don't think they use a separate grill for them... not sure. It's a really good patty tho, and reasonable price with fries.
  • My rant: Potato chips as a side can shove it. I am sick of seeing these as free sides to sammies. Aren't we more healthy than this? I get that they are cheap, but c'mon. I call shenanigans. I'm pointing at you Olympic Provisions.
  • Love Little Big but I always need 2, so it bumps over $10 for 2 with fries.
