It will grow back and then I'd OWN IT so I could do all sorts of research on how to turn it into a trust or something so clearcutting could never happen again!
I wouldn't mind living in a clear cut. I think they are weirdly beautiful (and sad). It would be really cool to watch all the new growth change all the time.
If anyone want's to play the gentlepersons farmer, I have a feeling a friend may give up a stellar rental in Scappoose. Very cool 2b3+b A-frame, garage with separate living space, clean and dry barn, fruit trees, and a big field. View of the Columbia, private gravel road.
i'm sure it sold already dude! but if you want in future to be able to just suddenly make an offer like this, then go get pre-approved for a loan! Then you can slam the money on the table at the drop of a hat!
PLEASE LISTEN TO ME IF YOU ARE A SINGLE PERSON WANTING A CONDO ALTERNATIVE: you have to go see that little FSBO on 30th and Prescott. I went and toured it this morning and 100% fell in love. If I were still on the market, I would put an offer in immediately.
You have to want a truly tiny cottage-home, but if that sort of thing is your vibe, this is the one.
Also WAY the heck out there in Gresham or Troutdale or whatever but it has some serious 70s style and TWO SEPARATE LIVING QUARTERS (y'all know that I'm very enthusiastic about separate living quarters). $280k
@KMikeyM: Ranch style homes are usually on the outskirts. If this doesn't make you less interested in them, I will find/post. Lord knows I don't want to be searching in vain!
I like a nice craftsman style all modernized and energy efficient within walking distance of a hippie food store (New Seasons / Whole Foods). I might not be on the market until Feb.
Since I moved into mine in April, the (brand new) microwave konked out, the (brand new) fridge started leaking water onto my wood floors and the freezer became one enormous ice cube, and now we have no heat! The (brand new) furnace has apparently konked out! Oh well, what's ANOTHER $60 service fee? Oh AND, my downstairs tenant's (brand new) stove will not cook anything without smoking up the place and setting off the fire alarm.
On top of my computer that just died and my employer who messed up and now refuses to give me health insurance until Jan. 2014, I have HAD IT with customer service departments. Seriously. I don't know how people are able to work these systems. I'm too matter-of-fact, I think. "You screwed up, you should fix this, but if you don't I'm just going to be unhappy. What's that? You won't fix it? Oh, well. Ok then, I guess."
Not buying a house could save you a few of these problems, at least.
If you are someone who knows about furnaces and wants to come fix mine, I'll bake you a lasagna. I bought all the ingredients at the store today.
I ripped out the weird speaker that kept buzzing every two hours in our fridge: http://instagram.com/p/fg4FQsEqr6/ (free, but our freezer is also/has also been just one giant ice cube and the temperatures are a little bizarre)
We only had hot water coming out of our taps for the first 2.5 months. The plumber came last week and fixed the valve. ($170, but apparently now all of the building's 4 washing machines get hot water from our hot water heater, but whatever, most people use cold)
Refinished the windows (previously sealed shut, which led to water intrusion and some rotting) in our sunroom. ($1000 + paint and stuff)
So yeah, this shit gets expensive for sure. Still generally happy with our decision, though. Hang tight! At least you have a tenant to help pay the mortgage!
Alex, I agree that you should def. not be paying for others' laundry-heat!
Oh, and...I fixed the furnace! All by myself! It was really tricky and took a lot of skill and only a few full-furnace inspections, but I did it! (...by plugging it back into the wall. It had become unplugged.)
Better watch it, Mike! We may get into some SW ranch house bidding wars! I am trying to corner the market on wood paneled romper rooms in the almost-burbs.

Mike can live far away, then he'll have to get his own car.
