What iPhone apps should I get?

edited January 2013
OK, fine, you bullies, I got an iPhone. What apps do I need? Here are the ones I've added so far (besides the ones that go without saying like Amazon, FB, Twitter, etc.):

Dark Skies
Qwordy
Nike Training Club
Car2Go
PDX Bus
Bike Maps

What else do I need? What else might be fun or make my life better?

  • TaskTask - attach files to your meeting reminders/ coordinates with Tasks in your mail program
Scanner pro - use your phone like a high quality scanner. best document capture software, worth all seven bucks it cost
ViewAhead - anticipate rest stops, gas stations, hotels from the road
Go to trimet.org, navigate to transit tracker, enter your favorite bus sop ID then drop the link to your home page as a shortcut (PDX bus lacks this easy access to bus arrival info)
Adobe reader, Evernote, and skitch for PDF/document access and markup

  • Thanks, everybody!

Mike, why is Tweetbot ($$) better than the free Twitter app, which seems perfectly functional to me?

Also, Find2Car is no longer supported as an app. You have to use the Car2Go official app.
  • I like the feel and interface better on tweetbot. I forgot it was $3. OTOH, it's only $3. :)

Find2Car still works... weird. Well, I'll try the "official" app!
  • Al Jazeera
    Zillow & Redfin
    TripIt
    Hipmunk
    OnTheFly
    Airbnb
    Cooks Illustrated
    NY Times
  • Free Ringtones from Boys.
  • twitter, huh?

    is everybody doing it?
  • I follow mostly comedians, and Gary's BumpStickIdeas
    I rarely post
It is a fun way to hear a few jokes if you've got some down time
I find it difficult to wade through all the re-tweets and stuff but I am getting better
    BumpStickIdeas is really good though
"It's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Jennifer"
    "Children Need Both Step-Parents"
    "Continue Following Me On Twitter"
"How Do I Find Out About What To Buy"

Owly, the other day he tweeted "Hunks Are People Too" because I told him

    our biz is launched
  • Gary's twitters is one of my favorites. Also whatever we call Phil here. I like his a lot.
  • Phil's are so good
    so weary
  • HUNKS Are People 2!
  • I am at 415 followers and I would love 5 more, so pls follow me at http://twitter.com/alexmahan
  • ban this user
  • I made one, but now I have performance anxiety.
  • Plus every good iteration of my name was taken! Assholes!

    @Matthew Joey calls him "Fudge".
  • My twits is deep bike/transpo nerdery. If you like that kind of thing, my handle is just my full name.
  • Twitter gets good after you follow about 100 sources... Keeps it moving. Though I do have respect for folks that follow a very small number. Focus.
  • I decided I don't like twitter. I like to check my phone as little as possible. I think I will delete this app.

    I enjoy:

Harbor Master -- when flying on planes
Garage Sale Rover -- for looking up cool estate sales
    Flipboard --for managing my sites
Pano Tuner -- for tuning my uke
PublicArtPDX -- for figuring out "who made that cool mural?"

I need to delete a bunch of people I follow.... My principle is to have more followers than people I follow

Sally, you might enjoy following celebrities
  • Chelsea Peretti's twitter reliably makes me LOL
I also enjoy when Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black have sarcastic back-and-forths with each other
I also love this character Tim Heidecker plays on Twitter sometimes where he is like this humorless scold. "A lot of people worked hard on that movie you're making fun of. #growup" and such
I like Jen Kirkman's ceaseless feminist ranting

    weirder stuff I follow:
the composer Nico Muhly's twitter has a very funny tone I enjoy
I follow this person who tweets in the middle english of Chaucer and it makes me laugh
I follow Gary The Squirrel, which I can't really describe

I had to un-follow Yoko Ono
  • I also do not like Twitter. It never feels satisfying for me. I like reading a funny thought now and then, but looking through a huge stream of "funny" thoughts just gets tedious. And if it's not a funny thought, it's usually something really mundane or half of a conversation. There's way too much of it to deal with, and I don't even follow that many people. And I feel guilty about not following people back because I don't want to increase the flood of pointlessness even more.

I stay on there in case people want to reach out to me, or I want to reply to something someone said.

I think I'm going to go there right now and just follow back all my followers. I never read it anyways.

  • Also, I didn't know that YT was a FOT.
  • A dry joke tweet the other day I did about an Italian food restaurant netted me a gift card!

    Twitter pays off!

I also love the Amazon app for the reasons Marc_Zuck said! Such a great tool for knowing if you are getting a good deal or not.
  • Ok, I added a ton of people on Twitter. While I was there, I looked at my list that is supposedly the accounts I actually care about. It was mostly links to other stuff!! This bugs me so much, and is part of why I hate Twitter. Most of it is just links!
  • I got an email confirming MZ is now following me. Sorry MZ, I already deleted the app.

    Buca di beppo is awesome
It's like the Olive Garden of Italian food!!
  • the thing I most hate about Twitter is indeed the links to other stuff. Overwhelming, if you click it takes forever to load, takes you down weird rabbit holes, but if you ignore you never go back later to click, even if it looked interesting. Sometimes when I look at Twitter it is just a stream of gibberish, like one tweet will have 3 "@"s and an "RT" and then a link and it's like, hold up here frenchy

    MZ what's "FOT"?
  • Friend of Tom (Scharpling)
  • oh yeah!
    He's great
  • Links are what it's about. That and 'search' function. And breaking news. It's fun when you tweet somebody big or interesting and they tweet you right back. It's also real. I've met a lot of folks in the tweets, my buds on the res last week, for example, and a band from australia a couple weeks ago, and cintra wilson, and marc maron, and Dave Roberts, and Uncle Boat Shoes... no wait, he was in my cereal box!
  • I'm doing it!

    It's fun!

I don't care who reads it or pays attention, I just think it will be great to have a place to put those little blursts of dumb thought that bubble up every once in awhile. If you know me you can find me, I'll be saying dumb stuff with frequency and NOT doing a bunch of links.
  • If I do a bad job or have annoying tweiet ettiquette please do tell me, though.
  • If you ever want to get some friendly messages from people, just follow a bunch of them on Twitter. Already had like 4 happy interactions.
  • Tim Shrimpleigh
  • I like following you guys on twitter. We are in on a secret.

I thought FOT meant friends on twitter.
