I really love Hot Chip. Which is weird, because most popular contemporary UK bands really kinda suck.

Have you guys heard this really amazing Hot Chip remix feat. Bonnie Prince Billy?

(The YouTube compression on the audio sucks)
(The version on Spotify (sorry, Steve) sounds much better: http://open.spotify.com/track/3zYadGAEAN3wCwbkIPZzhW)
  • YouTubes sound good if you boost em up to 480 or 720p

    Todd Terje - Inspector Norse

Another Todd Terje track! Another Todd Terje track! This song played on a pre-show playlist on the tour I was recently on. I heard this song like 25 nights in a row and every night it made me happy.

    Swamp Dogg - Synthetic World

Swamp Dogg! Just learning about this amazing dude. He was a child performer. Lil Jerry Somethingerother and had some hits. Had a tough time owning his adult persona of just Jerry Williams so he became Swamp Dogg. He also got weird! He makes somewhat psychedelic soul music. He also wrote straight up hits for other soul & country artists.

His first album (which this song comes from) under the Swamp Dogg name was called Total Destruction to Your Mind.

Look at the cover of the second Swamp Dogg album (this is mostly for Loose Thread's appreciation)

    Plus the songs are awesome.

    Fleetwood Mac - Hold Me

Never enough 80s Mac. I'm unapologetic!

This song written by Christine McVie (Lindsey Buckingham sings lead) shows what an underrated force she was in Mac.
The production on this song is so great.

Courtney Love - The 2nd Most Beautiful Girl In The World

    From 1990

In 1993 I found out about K Records/Kill Rock Stars via college radio station KXLU in Los Angeles. They played some artists (maybe Tattle Tale) that i think investigated. I bought the International Pop Underground Convention compilation. Lots of neato artists on there (Unwound, Fugazi, Seaweed, Nation of Ulysses, Melvins, L7, The Spinanes, The Pastels, Bratmobile, Kicking Giant, Beat Happening). I was weirdly drawn to this one very simple song on the album. It was called "Motorcycle Boy" by a band called Courtney Love. This Courtney Love was not the lady who married Kurt Cobain and made a baby with him. This was a band comprised of Lois Maffeo and Pat Maley. I found a 7" by this band and it was great. Very simple pop songs played just well enough. This was my Olympia education. Beautiful amateurism.

They only put out a couple 7"s as a band. Lois went on to put out a bunch of albums under the name Lois and an album as Owl & The Pussycat.

Here's a youtube that someone put up who thought it was that other Courtney:

    Here's the song Motorcycle Boy
  • She also did a nice vocal on Evil Tambourines "Library Nation". Also on Go Team's "Archer Come Sparrow" comp (or was it Donna Parker Pop? I get them confused.) She is a pretty great entertainer (though I might like the bits between songs even better than the songs sometimes. She's very good at the banter.)

Trivia-ville: Lois moved into Courtney's room in a group house in Portland when Courtney left for her (first?) LA adventure ( to be in Alex Cox movies and stuff; this is years before she met the young fellow from Aberdeen). Courtney left a lot of personal things behind, diaries, etc. I guess Lois found her fascinating.

Sorry if this is in a book or something. I just thought it would be fun to know. (chatter chatter)
  • She sang on Archer Come Sparrow! You're right.

    Great info, Dr. J!
  • louis told me that a plane had crashed into the world trade center
i was at calvin's sleeping on the couch, she awake in her room listening to the radio

What can I say? Songs don't get much more perfect than this one.
What a great band. Combination of pop songs and legitimately funky grooves.
    Constantly changing.

Laetitia Sadier is the reason why I make music.

DrJ: As a fan of Courtney Love (the band, not the lady) you really piqued my curiosity, I had heard various version of how Lois picked "Courtney Love" for a band name, but never this one before.
  • has anyone heard the new laetitia solo record
  • oh yeah this song RULES
  • I have the new Laetitia record by the player,
have yet to listen to it!

@Joey re CL: I get things wrong but that is the story in my head. It's from my recollection of visiting Lois at that house and hearing amusing stories about the former housemate. My impression is that my visit occurred before Lois and Pat had started working together.

Lil Wayne - Shine feat. Mack 10, Hot Boyz, Mannie Fresh

This is Lil Wayne from 12 years ago.
He was 17 when he made this album.

More importantly, I was feeling Mannie Fresh today. Mannie Fresh produced this song. He is a hip hop production legend (also half of the Big Tymers). He produced everything for Cash Money. Before that he was many early bounce records in New Orleans. He has also produced by hits for TI, Young Jeezy and countless more. He also has two solo albums that I really love.

The production on this song is super, but the drum programming is inventive and perfect for summer.

    Here's Mannie's production discography
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannie_Fresh_production_discography

This is an awesome lecture/interview with Mannie and awesome hip hop critic/journalist Noz.

Alice in Chains - Whale & Wasp

Seems totally sacrilegious to post an AiC track without Layne Staley's awesome vocals, but this instrumental track from the weird and good Jar of Flies ep fits my overheated, lets slow down our heart rates vibes.

Chief Keef - I Don't Like (ft. Lil Reese)

This is that hot Chi-town shee.
Young ass dudes. Young Chop on the beat. This shit hit so hard that Kanye made a remix of it and oomph'd up the beat and put a lot of his homies on it. I like the remix but the original is just rawer.

Great video too. Just in the house:

    Here's the remix:

The Minders - Give Me Strength

Remember these guys? They started in Denver in the mid 90s. Moved to Portland in the late 90s and were very active in Portland in the early 00s. They were related to the Elephant 6 Collective. Great pop songs. I really dig the album that this song comes from, Golden Street.
  • where are they now?
  • no, jk.
But that guy Martyn did work at Oasis for a long time.
I think the band got back together and had a song on the PDX Pop Now comp from last year.
The lady from this band is now in Wild Flag ( I don't think she's in The Minders anymore)
