Reminds me I just listened to Hissing of Summer Lawns (1975) the other day at my mom's house. Joni has a Moog experiment on there that I found most rad: The Jungle Line.
Deep 90s LA indie band that played at classic all ages venue Jabberjaw all the time. This song is pretty Dino Jr-y. Some dudes in this band went on to be in Beachwood Sparks. Obscure albums. Good band!
Also, I made this: http://ssotd.tumblr.com/ If anyone wants to follow then the SSOTDs will automatically pop up streamable in their tumblr feeds and all the songs from here on out should be streamable in one place (not just the current song)
DJ Douggpound (Doug Lussenhop) is a main creative force behind Tim & Eric's shows (he writes, edits, makes music) and also has worked on Portlandia, and does live performances as well. This is from his 09 mix tape called Pound It which I only discovered this year. It's one of the funniest albums I've ever heard. DOWNLOAD IT (WARNING: some crude and rude humor)
A summer jam from 2005 this one is still totally undeniable. These dudes from Atlanta/Decatur were part of so many "next big thing" lists in 05 but haven't put out any music since their 05 album Wood Work. I enjoyed that album, but this was the standout.
This is a hit from 1965. This funky dude from Texas played with a group called The Traits, but then went solo in 65 and nailed this one. Check out this dudes dance moves!
This is a good song. Yesterday a bunch of people from the VBSTOPE found themselves at Village Pizza and I put "Black Hole Sun" and "Crazy on You" on the jukebox (not very many choices) in true Pacific Northwest fashion. One of the songs is still really awful and the other is still really good. Guess which.
Young LA rapper dude who is not part of Odd Future. This mix tape he put out is great. He is super self aware, smart, funny, and obviously loves the history of rap music. He also has a secondary character that does a few tracks on the mixtape named mitchgonemad who is sorta free association weirdness like a mix of Lil B, OJ Da Juiceman, and Waka.
Bay Area analog diy techno awesome dudes! Some of the raddest dance music made in the last 10 years came from these folks. This is from their last release (2010) and I don't think they are a band anymore. This is slightly cleaner and less wacky than most of their earlier stuff, but I'm feeling its heaviness.
To help focus our quiet cooling soft energies away from the heats. Also, this is the 500th Secret Song of the Day! That's a lot! Terry Riley is the coolest. If you haven't heard "In C" or "Rainbow in Curved Air" please go listen to those now. This is from his 1978 album "Shri Camel."
HORRORCORE. Hip hop group (featuring RZA and Prince Paul) from 1994. This song comes from one of my favorite rap albums of all time ("6 Feet Deep"). These dudes somehow rap about grisly murder without taking themselves too seriously and making it fun.
The soul/pop/disco/r&b group which consisted of sisters from Oakland, CA had on and off success throughout the 70s and 80s. You might know them from hits like "Yes We Can, Can", a cover of Sprinsteen's "Fire," "Slow Hand," "Jump (For My Love)," "I'm So Excited," and the excellent "Neutron Dance."
This song is from 1983 and is spectacular. The vocal on the verse is delightfully low for a lady.
This dude! Jazz guitarist! Made soul jazz fusion bop funk smooth records for years and years and then every once in a while he would have a pop crossover hit like "This Masquerade" or "Breezin" or "Turn Your Love Around".
oooh yeah! GB!!!! did anyone go to the casino and see him last month? remember the billboard on I-5? so much make up/ facial surgery/ photoshops? but also
I've watched the "give me the night video" many times in the last few days. There is so much in it that I love. Let me name some of these:
The 'do it all' percussionist/vocalist lady. Who is she? I want to be a major fan and study her whole career.
GB is such a badass skater! OMG! Backwards with his white guitar and shit eating grin! A-fukkin-mazing!
Skating. Everybody in a big boogie skate parade. Sure, why not?
Dude's home-modified boombox for the skate party.
Fancy date includes pulling the Bentley over for a few dogs. Just folks...!
Japanese MTV phone number overlay!
GB's funny face eyes throughout. Is he making fun of the lipsynch or is he just a maximum fun loving goofball. (The way he skates makes me think the latter is true.)
How about that GB billboard in the background of the final shot? Just a little something...
An extremely good Portland band that existed from like 98-04. Andrew Kaffer was the dude who made it happen. A good songwriter, who was also always interested in recording in new interesting ways. Magic Marker put out the 2 Kissing Book records and then Marriage record put out a record under Andrew Kaffer’s name.
The first record (“lines and colors”) was pretty poppy (indie pop?). The second one had pop songs and electronic beats and jazz influence (this sounds bad, but it totally wasn’t).
Husband and wife (one Japanese, one American, both living in the UK) band really erasing all lines between dance music and punk and rock and weirdo and whatever else. This is from 2003.
A melancholy tune from the 2nd songwriter from Guided by Voices' "classic lineup." Tobin Sprout is also a photorealistic painter. He wrote some good songs.
1994 This is the solo project of one of the dudes from the band Thinking Fellers Union 282. It's a bit silly and has a trombone! It continues my tradition of liking songs that list off the mundane things you do in a day!
Midnight Magic - Beam Me Up (Jaques Renault Remix)
I first heard about this song from Claire L. Evans' mix that she made for YACHT tour that then became that cool mix that boing boing posted. This is a current band from New York City with such a cool brassy front lady and horns and everything! They are playing at Holocene on Sunday night! They put on a good show! Go to it!
Well S___! This one is for the occupiers. This 1994 song from the often stupid, often smart, great punk rock band really reads exactly the same now as it did then. NOFX is not given enough credit.
Even if it's easy to be free What's your definition of freedom? And who the fuck are you, anyway? Who the fuck are they? Who the fuck am I to say? What the fuck is really going on?
How did the cat get so fat? Why does the family die? Do you care why?
Cause there hasn't been a sign Of anything gettin' better in the ghetto People's fed up Getting fed up
You point your fuckin' finger You racist, you bigot But that's not the problem Now is it?
It's all about the money Political power is taken Protecting the rich, denying the poor Yeah, they love to watch the world from the White House And I wonder...
How can they sleep at night? How can they sleep at night? How did the cat get so fat? How did the cat get so fat? How did the cat get so fat? How did the cat get so fat?
Comments
Just tried to get this going.
Here's the problem. 4 of the last 6 SSOTD songs are unavailable on Spotify. What then?
Can you play "MAN on the Run" by Paul Macartney's Wings?
Thanx,
gary
Blotto - I Wanna Be A Lifeguard
Ohio Players - I Want to Be Free
Volatile and soft at the same time. Strong and pleasant.

Tippa Irie - 769 1230
This is from a comp called UK Bubblers focusing on UK Dancehall 84-87 that Alex hipped me to. Thanks, Alex! Great stuff on here.
further - Gimme Indie Fox

Gravediggaz - 1 800-SUICIDE
HORRORCORE. Hip hop group (featuring RZA and Prince Paul) from 1994. This song comes from one of my favorite rap albums of all time ("6 Feet Deep"). These dudes somehow rap about grisly murder without taking themselves too seriously and making it fun.
Spectral Display - It Take a Muscle To Fall In Love (Get a Room Edit)
Dutch group. 1982. Great song!
(via Jona)
The Pointer Sisters - Automatic
The soul/pop/disco/r&b group which consisted of sisters from Oakland, CA had on and off success throughout the 70s and 80s. You might know them from hits like "Yes We Can, Can", a cover of Sprinsteen's "Fire," "Slow Hand," "Jump (For My Love)," "I'm So Excited," and the excellent "Neutron Dance."

Frank Ocean - Thinking About You
Hey! Its the R&B dude from Odd Future. Instead of using shock and awe to attract audiences like some other OFWGKTAers he uses good songwriting!
Mu - Let's Get Sick
