Comments

  • OK. Can we talk about work out tunes? Abba and Rihanna only get me so far on my runs. Will you athletic friends please share your exercise playlists? What songs get you going?
  • Current jog list faves:

    Queen: Somebody to Love
    Madonna: Like a Prayer
Air Supply: All out of Love
    Beyonce: Irreplacable, Check on it
    Devo: Satisfaction

this seems like a weird list now that I look at it but for me it works!!
  • I don't always listen to music when I work out but:

    Usher: Climax
    MIA: Bad Girls
    Drake: Thank Me Now
Jay Z & Kanye West: Why I Love You
Killer Mike: Big Money, Big Cars

And like all the World Passport podcast.
  • Wanda, I would think that you just gotta find the motivation inside of you, and match it up to music: is it a mood, a pace, a meaning? Positive, fast and uplifting? Sincere, regulated, and determined? Personally I like to listen to repetitive music with a forboding tone when I need to be motivated, because it reminds me to work hard to stay alive. Hope this helps

Yesterday I moved tree limbs while listening to one of David Harvey's lectures on DAS KAPITAL. (Chapter 15, pt. 1. "Yummy!)
  • LT- totally helps. I like listening to sexy and/or feminist uptempo songs when I exercise- I just don't have enough on my ipod to keep things fresh. Looking for songs to add!
  • There are also lady members of Fucked Up and Black Flag, so I guess it's more like 95% Male Aggression. (R.I.P. EATS TAPES)
  • Wanda, you need CRISTINA

You're getting a mix from me.

I did two days with Brandon in a row.

I feel pretty tired, but also pretty good.

UBS should make an awesome working out mix.

I'm super into classic rock for working out. Rolling Stone, Kinks, Clash, the more rocking Petty and Springsteen...
  • totally bought little red shorts in Michigan.

    TWINSIES!
  • Let's grow mustaches, take the top off that car, and drive around wine country shirtless this summer.

New Mike was the reformulation of Mike Merrill introduced in 2012 by The KmikeyM Company to replace the original incarnation of its flagship product (also called Mike). New Mike originally had no separate name of its own, but was simply known as "the new style of Michael" until February of 2012 when it was renamed Mike II. Eventually the term New Mike caught on because saying Mike II was confusing to people who kept hearing it as Mike too, and thought there was another Mike in the room.

    image

KmikeyM's most senior executives commissioned a secret effort named "Project Hawaii" to test and perfect the new style for Mike himself. It took its name from a famous photo of Tom Selleck as Magnum P.I. wearing red shorts that had been used extensively in its advertising and hung on several executives' walls. The company's marketing department again went out into the field, this time armed with photoshopped images of the possible new style for tests, surveys, and focus groups.

The results of the tests were strong — the sleeker streamlined image overwhelmingly beat regular Mike. When asked if they would be friends with and drink a beer with New Mike most said yes, they would, although it would take some getting used to. A small minority, about 10-12%, felt angry and alienated at the very thought, saying that they might unfriend Mike on Facebook. Their presence in focus groups tended to skew results in a more negative direction as they exerted indirect peer pressure on other participants.

Management also considered, but quickly rejected, an idea to simply make a new version of Mike called Mike Jr. It was decided that a new variety of Mike in competition with the main variety could, if successful, also harm the share price.

  • take your workout to another level:

    Shellac
    400 Blows

(Eats Tapes is also very good! it's perfect Jazzercise music! (and i don't mean that in a bad way))

OptiMike your MaxiMike to achieve OmniMike.
  • Seems like music for running should be different than lifting heavy stuff? Maybe?

I usually only have the sounds of Brandon yelling at me when I work out. Maybe I could record that for you. It's pretty effective. He had a Boston accent.
  • I listen to RadioLab and This American Life podcasts. They help me focus on listening instead of looking at the clock and thinking about how much time is still left in the workout.

The pace of the music is definitely helpful for jogging. Really fast music tends to make me feel anxious, and stuff that is too slow makes me want to give up.

This is about the perfect pace for me

stuff with a solid kick drum seems to help me stay motivated too.

I think good dancing music and good jogging music have a lot in common probably.

I don't do lifting heavy stuff, but I imagine the best music for that is just loud and aggressive?
  • Oh! I bet Dan Deacon would be great workout music.
  • I heard "Mike" is actually being played by a whole new person in 2012 a la Andrew WK.

I heard anybody could get there early and sign up for the Open Mike.
  • Open Mike is only on Tuesday nights. And while you don't have to buy a juice or salad, it's sort of expected.
  • Open Mike is kind of like goatse
  • That's why it's just once a week.
  • HEALTHTIP:

I've been using BreakTime to remind me to get up and get a glass of water every 30 mins. That's a lot of water!!
  • Yeah. I cane like 10 pints a day of water at work. Lots of peeing!
  • Awesome tip guys! I totally believe health resides in pounding water and letting it flow.
  • Used the last of my Hemp Protein this morning and bought a can of Whey Protein that was described to me as very "pure".
  • My mom is way into Whey.
  • Turns out there is no scientific evidence that whey helps with building muscle. That's weird.
  • It's all the psychic energy getting transferred from one vessel to another I guess.

I went to the gym this morning and burned some calories. This chart proves it.
  • Yeah! Do you like your fitbit? I've thought about getting one because I like measuring and logging.
  • I've had the fitbit for about a week. It's pretty neat, but I'm not sure I would have gotten one without the discount I got through a get-healthy program at work. If the web site were better, it would be easier to recommend. But as it is, I think it's too expensive at full retail.

Is anyone using the Nike Fuel Band?
  • No, but I want to try it. Its $150. :(
  • I know someone who got one recently. Might ask him his opinion after he's had some time.
  • I'm starting to get a blister/callus from the weights. No more "Delicate hands Mike" over here I guess (I always hated that nickname anyway). I should find a nice hand moisturizer.
  • Get some fancy-man weightlifting gloves.
  • Gloves are for every occasion.
  • back when I was a drummer in a rock band I got big bloody blisters on my palms and wrapped them in electrical tape and felt awesome.

the mark of a true badass

now my hands are as soft as a baby rabbits butt

    :(
