Once again, PDX Fest is serving up a full smorgasbord of alternative cinema, so get ready to dive in!
Up ahead we have five full days of jam-packed cinematic fun featuring a whole mess of visiting artists, video installations, live performances, filmmaker workshops, rockin’ parties and of course, the excellent experimental and documentary films and videos that you have come to expect from PDX Fest!
We are honored to be opening the festival with a tribute to one of cinema’s all-time greats, Bruce Conner, who passed away last summer. Join us as we celebrate the life and work of this immensely influential cinematic innovator with a rare screening of selected 16mm films from throughout his career.
PDX Fest offers a huge warm welcome to our two featured guests this year – Peggy Ahwesh and Ben Coonley! On Thursday, Ben will present a playful, interactive program of his video and new media work, featuring an existential cat, a talking pony, a PowerPoint lecture and 3D glasses! Peggy will be presenting a mini-retrospective of selections from her vast body of work including some of her early Super 8 films as well as her more recent ventures into the digital realm. In addition to these very special programs, both Ben and Peggy will be offering super fun, super affordable filmmaker workshops over the weekend.
As always, PDX Fest will be featuring a number of new films screening in Portland for the first time as well as a whole gang of visiting artists. We are very excited to present Brett Gaylor’s documentary RiP: A Remix Manifesto, which tackles the tricky subject of copyright in the age of the internet through the work of mash-up artist Girl Talk and Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig. We are thrilled to welcome the amazing Deborah Stratman back to PDX Fest for a closing night screening of her stunning new 16mm feature, O’er The Land, which has been wowing audiences from Sundance to Rotterdam this year. Lee Anne Schmitt will be presenting her lovely 16mm documentary feature, California Company Town, which explores the history of the golden state’s boomtowns. Jennifer Montgomery will also be on hand to introduce her new experimental feature, Deliver, which is an all women remake of Deliverance. Plus, new work from Michael Gitlin, Shana Moulton, Sam Green, Adele Horne, Ben Rivers, Jennet Thomas and many, many more!
