Comment on Remembering Chava Ben-Amos by Ad Tolhuijs http://urbanhonking.com/plazm/2018/05/28/remembering-chava-ben-amos/#comment-44728 Mon, 27 Aug 2018 13:31:38 +0000 http://urbanhonking.com/plazm/?p=1431#comment-44728 Until early this year 2018 I occasionally corresponded with my good “old” friend Chava. When I started working for a leading NY design company in September 1964, a month later Chava joined the company. Her friend and later husband had not yet arrived from Israel. Chava and I become very close friends, a friendship that was continued when I returned to the USA (from Switzerland) in 1969 and worked again with her at the same design firm. She and I had shared many discussions about WW2, where she had been in the infamous camp in Auschwitz, whereas I lived through the hunger and German terror in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Unfortunately, one year later she left the company while I stayed till I moved to Columbia in 1972. Only many years later, in fact only a few years ago,I found her address and picked up our contact. I planned to visit her in NY but only today I found out that she has passed away. I feel it as a great loss. I will always remember her kindly.

Comment on The future is going to be weird. by Benjamin http://urbanhonking.com/plazm/2013/04/06/the-future-is-going-to-be-weird/#comment-40761 Thu, 04 Jun 2015 16:11:02 +0000 http://urbanhonking.com/plazm/?p=738#comment-40761 Curious how he plans to deal with the mutual relationship our brain has with our stomach? https://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/201110/your-backup-brain

Chinese medicine has always acknowledged the connection between the brain and the stomach also. Although artificial intelligence is interesting, but how will we be uploading our stomachs to the cloud? :)

Anyways, I guess I’m seeing more and more of a disconnect between people who believe in technology, medical science and old world knowledge.

As Thomas J. Watson Sr. said “To visualize the future…you must know something of the past”

I will admit that we will have to deal with AI as there is no escaping it. So how can we approach it in a less Wild West everything is simple and approach it in a way of respect for nature, history and acknowledge the complexity of our natures.

Although this is where design plays an interesting role. For awhile I was afraid of the concept of AI, but when I see cute little origami robots: http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2015/06/mit-origami-robot/

Sorry rambling. Great post!

Comment on More Things I Can Say About MFA Writing Students Now That I’m Not Taking Their Money by lucy mendes http://urbanhonking.com/plazm/2015/03/05/bitter-mfa-dude/#comment-40116 Tue, 28 Apr 2015 17:06:55 +0000 http://urbanhonking.com/plazm/?p=1059#comment-40116 Very funny parody.

Might it be said that those who can be funny will come out shinier in a post-post-modern world? The larger story behind the blowup might look to Paul Constant leaving the stranger, along with a host of other writers of late; the stranger’s willfulness for controversy (sometimes at the expense of a goaded and goading writer) and of course a subsequent and general lust for indignation-fueled take-downs. The aggrieved (and mostly anonymous) public moved almost immediately to have the dude ousted from his project work.

Now why is that?

It takes people time to have something to say. It helps to have experience with other writing (and with living).

If we are careful, we can write without stepping into an ambition shit-pit devised mostly by others. Posturing while ambitious has its risks. Intelligence is in the planning, the keeping and the revising.

Something I read in one of the comment streams: “God is in the details.”

Thanks for commenting. I’m wondering if I should maybe post something more… thoughtful… about the whole thing. Bitter MFA Dude may’ve done it in a pathetic way, but he did bring up some relevant issues.

Your parody is more effective and illuminating than any of the other responses I’ve seen.
