Huntsman Fever

edited January 2012
Mr. H got a few seconds of attention on NPR this morning.

Not bad, given how many have already risen and fallen on the Republican side.

Not leading, but definitely still in the race. Here's a post from The Economist today:

http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2012/01/republican-nomination-2

I think it would be a good thing if he becomes the Republican candidate.

Anything is possible.

  • Seems like a nice enough fellow.
At least not a raving lunatic.

Our standard for a republican candidate are so low! "This guy doesn't seem certifiably insane---WHAT A GREAT CANDIDATE"
  • I did that WNYC test and he was the closest republican candidate to my views

    http://datanews.wnyc.org/match_game/the-candidate-shuffle
  • Yeah, same here, Matthew.
  • HE'S THE BEST!

He likes Captain Beefheart! And tofu!
  • wow, Ron Paul came in first for me, Huntsman second. Barry O a distant third!!

i think environmental issues are the only thing that keeps me from being a libertarian.

  • Big Mac, SAME! I was too ashamed to post it.
  • I kind of love Ron Paul's "SHUT IT DOWN" attitude.
That should be his campaign slogan.
SHUT IT DOWN! EVERYTHING! The war, the entire military, immigration, college, libraries, roads, the post office, SHUT IT ALL DOWN. EVERYBODY STAY IN YOUR HOMES TIL THIS BLOWS OVER
  • I feel tricked.
    I did the test.....
    Newt Gingrinch
    :(

  • YT, you forgot HORDE GOLD.

SHUT IT DOWN AND HORDE GOLD!
  • Ha ha!

Steve you did not!!!!!!!!!! That guy is such a dick! Most unlike-you person I can imagine.
  • It's pretty clear that Ron Paul is a weird racist, though, right?

He was recently photo'd with the formerly head of the American Nazi Party and KKK Grand Wizard.

There's all the newsletters from the 90s which he paid for and have his signature at the end of writings with INSANE racists, anti-semitic, and super homophobic crazy conspiracy shit in them which he now says he didn't write.

He has said publicly that USA has no place saving the Jews in WW2.

    http://globalcomment.com/2012/palling-around-with-nazis-how-republican-rhetoric-obscures-ron-pauls-white-supremacist-base-and-undermines-democracy/

He is beloved by white supremacists and would disavow their support!

  • I totally got Gingrich!

It was a weird test though, many similar options, and at times I was confused.
  • Ron Paul's racist/conspiracy newsletters are CERTIFIABLY INSANE.

He also opposed the civil rights act: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/01/ron-paul-civil-rights-act_n_1178688.html because it "undermines liberty". Guess what, Ron. It also repealed Jim Crow laws, banned employment discrimination, and banned state-endorsed segregation. What would you do, "leave it up to the free market"?

    What a total cock.
  • " Elsewhere, he alleged that gay men “enjoy the attention” that supposedly comes with AIDS diagnosis."
  • Yeah, when I said "I kind of love" I meant "enjoy the extremism and insanity of"

I got Huntsman, which is fine, but the test was weird--many times I picked a quote I did not at all agree with simply because it was the least batshit one, etc.

    "enjoy the attention!" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • I sure can get down with many of his proposed policies, but he is
    THE WORST.

Remember when Brüno came onto Ron Paul in a hotel room!

His relative success in this primary season makes that scene MUCH FUNNIER.
  • Oh shit, I totally forgot about Brüno hitting on Ron Paul. So amazing!

I like his policy about ending the war on drugs. Nobody else will even touch that shit.
  • I thought Ron Paul was ok, but now not so much.
  • There were many questions where I didn't agree with any too! there is a skip button though.
  • I got Michele Bachmann way over to the right with a red 'x' through her face, so I feel good about that

  • Seems like the libertarians could really capitalize on this attention and get a dude who isn't an snidely old man with no charisma and doesn't have ties to GRAND WIZARDS.

    MARK CUBAN ;)
  • "Cuban is an admirer of author/philosopher Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead. About Rand's novel The Fountainhead, he said: "[It] was incredibly motivating to me. It encouraged me to think as an individual, take risks to reach my goals, and responsibility for my successes and failures. I loved it." His political views lean towards libertarianism. He held a position on the centrist Unity08 political organization's advisory council. While learning towards libertarianism, Cuban posted an entry on his blog claiming paying more taxes to be the most patriotic thing someone can do."
  • well that sounds reasonable.
    ??? DOES IT?

    I don't even know anymore

Tonight I was thinking Occupy should register None-of-the-Above Party candidates in as many races as possible.

Do you guys know about The Pirate Party?
  • edited January 2012
It started in Sweden in 2006. There are presently 210 Pirates serving in various elected offices in Germany. *

They are basically The Internet Party. They were founded by The Pirate Bay BitTorrent people. There are affiliates all over the place. They have meetings. I'll let you know if I go.

None-of-the-Abovers could host live-streamed town hall meetings on legislative matters. People could show up and debate GA-style until 90% agreement could be found on a policy. The elected person would then do whatever the people decided they wanted them to do.

    And another thing!

    Political advertising should be free!

People often complain about all the money politicians have to raise. Oddly, people don't complain about where the money goes when the politicians spend it on political advertising. Of course this is a significant subsidy of our beloved media companies (who always find time to promote disastrous wars, civil rights roll-backs, fracking and the reduction of millionaires' taxes.)

If that shit were free to people like Mikey, or Lessig, or whomever, you bet we could turn this country around, like, pronto!
  • It is really insane to me that there are nazis and KKKs today. That feels like another universe. Can't we do something about that?
  • edited January 2012
I think it's a cultural, tribal, psychological phenomenon that is kind of beyond reach. Still, empathy can be taught and shame works on a lot of people. Some folks feed on notoriety though.

How about those GOD HATES GAYS people that show up at soldiers' funerals? Being divisive, taking a stand against the crowd, is a rush.

There are so many universes, right?

  • I read yahoo and Oregonian comments for the rush.
  • Huntsman was betting big on New Hampshire and he got 3rd. It's not looking good.

As a proud member of Generation H it's not easy to say, but I think he should call it a day and prep for 2016. My prediction is that we're in for four more years of Obama, and even as a registered Republican I like that better than a lot of the options my party is floating.

OMG, embedding a YouTube video can be so hard sometimes.
  • South Carolina's biggest newspaper endorsed Huntsman. This might be just what he needs to pick up some Huntsmomentum!

    http://www.thestate.com/2012/01/15/2114108/huntsman-could-bring-us-back-together.html
  • And... he's quitting the race.
  • While I'm not happy about it, it's not a shock or anything. Looking at the candidates I can't say I'm too excited about what my party has to offer.

    I'm considering http://www.republicansforobama.org

    Hahahahhaha!
  • god I hope Santorum takes the nomination, wouldn't that be INCREDIBLE

    what a fucking bloodbath
  • Wow, so spooky that Santorum is doing well :(
  • so bizarre, who are these people

    I LOVE THEM

Keep up the good work fellas!!!!!!!!! Oh god I get the biggest boner just thinking about a Santorum candidacy. YES!!!!! I feel like it would literally mean the end of the Republican party. He's TOO sex obsessed, it's too intense and weird. Plus, sweater vests
  • As long as there are billionaires to promote resource extraction, xenophobia, sexual bigotry and religious doctrine, I am confident the Republican Party will remain active in the USA.
  • O hey, an international website I'm involved with, Souciant got hacked last week. Somebody got into our WordPress server and was rewriting lines in anti-xenophobic articles. They were dropping in phrases about "defending the European motherland from attacks on our indo-european heritage," etc. We traced one of the intruders back to a server in Ballinger TX. Interesting. More next week.
  • NUKE TEXAS

What has Texas ever given to the world?
    - Tex Mex
    - My Dad's awesome side of the family
    - Ann Richards
    - The movie "Giant"
    - ?????
  • The phrase, "Houston, we have a problem."
  • The idea of not messing with it.

    Friday Night Lights.

    That one kind of toast.

My sixth grade teacher's favorite football team.

The home of the software retailer that gave Mark Cuban his start in computers, eventually leading to him selling Broadcast.com to Yahoo! for $6 billion in stock in 1999 and thus allowing him to own weird things like Landmark Theatres, HDNet, his children's book "Let's Go, Mavs!", and ultimately his greatest triumph as a guest investor on a few episodes of Shark Tank.
