jewelry

Where do you get it (in PDX)? I rarely wear jewelry, but I've been feeling like it might be fun to try some. Specifically, I'm thinking bracelets.

Also: who can fix jewelry in this town? I have a beautiful little bracelet from my great grandma that is broken and needs help. Any ideas?

Thank you, UHX!

  • I haven't bought any, but the store SWORD & FERN has so much really cool awesome local little pieces--rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, etc. It's also a little apothecary shop and you can buy weird locally-knit things like big cowls.

I would buy everything in that store. If I wanted to buy jewelry that's the first place I'd go!

  • I am an estate sale collector but... I have this Avon cubic zirconia tennis bracelet my stepmom gave me. One of the crystals fell out.

How much would it cost to put in a diamond??

    Thanks in advance
  • oh yeah emily at sword & fern should be your first stop and then she is nice and either has and can do all you need or knows the real answers
  • What kind of jewelry do you like, Flossy? Vintage stuff? Modern stuff? Metally industrial stuff (I'm guessing not) or pretty gem/stone based stuff? I have some ideas for you but I want to know what you're into!
  • For jewelry repair try any fancy jewelry shop downtown!
Yes, the ones that look cheesy and old and like no one goes in there anymore!

They have actual jewelers there who can do fixes quickly and inexpensively. For real.
  • Ann Foxlee, the wifey of the Hellion Gallery dude has a fancy laser welder/rebuild metals machine. She does that repair stuff - http://www.studioacornpdx.com/. And she speaks Japanese.
  • Sorry I neglected the thread I started! Actually, the sword and fern jewelry looks BEAUTIFUL. Mostly I like vintage stuff but nothing too ornate or complicated. I am a simple kinda gal.

I feel like therapists have to wear jewelry. And big sweaters.
  • And medallions with hypnotic whirls.

Pretty much every fancy lady boutique or shoe store in Portland has a nice small selection of jewelry. Manifesto on N Miss, for example, or Betsy & Iya, or Frances May, or Redux, or wherever.

But I also love shopping on Etsy when I have something specific in mind. It can be a bit of a slog but OTOH you can do it at whenever, no need for a special trip. I would be happy to point you to a couple of my favorite shops if you like, though I don't know if my style overlaps much with yours. Etsy has nice vintage stuff in addition to homemade too (but be sure you select the right category for your search). I've been a little obsessed with 1950's style sets - matching bracelet, necklace, earrings - for example. Try searching "Coro parure" and you'll see what I mean.

(Dalas, that image is super obnoxious...)
  • And if you look at it too long your vision gets all wacky!
  • THAT'S A TRI-ZONAL SPACE WARPER!
invented by Albany Oregon's own JERRY ANDRUS (RIP)

  • Nice. That's some deep Oregon shee right there.
  • OMG finally got some charcoal discs (like for hookahs) to burn my resin incense from Sword & Fern. This stuff is so cool! In my life forever now.

Is that like crystalized pine sap? They use that in mexico. You can make a burner out of a coke can over a votive candle.
  • It's similar, yeah, but when I devised a burner similar to a coke can over a candle, it didn't work very well. Gotta put the resin pebbles on top of a charcoal disc.
  • why charcoal?
I want to know the science! Doesn't the charcoal then burn and give you a thick black smoke??
  • No, the charcoal is somehow designed to just sit there being hot for a very long time, so you can keep adding incense to it for about two hours. It smokes a bit when you first light it, but then it just glows.
  • My friend Niles has some new necklace/earring shee up:

It's kinda hippie, kinda black metal.
