NYC

edited January 2012
So I'm planning a trip to ol' New York. Mostly going to be meeting up with people, but I feel like I haven't been there in a long time and have no idea what to check out so I thought I'd ask for people's favorite eats, places, etc. (Have we had this discussion already? I feel like we mostly, and with good cause, rip on NYC.)

  • I've been into fancy ramen places.

Also pizza. They have pizza here.

I would enjoy eating these with you.
  • that vegan bakery that is so amazing. What is it called? Babycakes or something.

Angela's Kitchen? I think that is a thing

When I went to Angela's Kitchen I was disappointed because it was pretty mediocre for being so famous and built up. But I'm definitely not an authority on the matter.
  • i've actually never been there!!!!!
  • that stupid place Momofuko? You could go there.
  • you could go see a BROADWAY MUSICAL
  • It was probably pretty groovy in its time, but felt uninspired. I did sit next to a lady who was talking to her therapist about her sex life in great detail so that may have soured the experience.
  • I think it's Angelica Kitchen?
  • It's true that it's nothing special that we don't already have here in Portland.

What was up with that lady's sex life?
  • Her boyfriend has a piercing and that's the only reason she liked him.
  • Also, doesn't seem really bizzarre to be having dinner with your therapist?
  • I used to get cokes at the BBQ place with my therapist (psychologist, psychiatrist? I don't know, I was too young to pay attention) that my mom made me see when my parents got divorced.
  • Matthew, we will meet up! I sent an email with dates and stuff. There is also a YACHT show the weekend I'm in town.

  • PBJ& co
    Pete's Candy Store
  • Daniel Peterson
  • Statue of Liberty
  • I guess you're going to have to stay there for two months, Mike.
  • If I were going to NYC in all honesty the only thing I would really want to do would be to go see shows at Pouisson Rouge

    GO THERE!
  • Mike, given your joie de vivre, you should have a drink in the lobby of the Bowery Hotel. Last time I was there I rode the elevator with Keanu Reeves. Too bad I didn't realize it until someone told me afterward. Also second the Kiosk recommendation.
  • what i really like about new york, beyond the ample pizza, is the corner store grillin me a breakfast sandwich. so many places, all with slightly different vibes. oh how i miss a good urban bodega.
  • Is Sesame Street in NYC?
  • I emailed Daniel. He's on my list!
  • also love a good bodega. What's that good sandwich one on Metropolitan? that place rules.

also, I'm assuming you have accommodations, but I'd recommend a fancy night here: http://lafayettenyc.com/
  • Hanna Food? I think that was it.
  • Go do that crazy "Sleep No More" thing.
  • HAMPTON CHUTNEY COMPANY -- it's in Soho
  • Exciting news. My assistant booked an apt via AirBnB on the 40th floor. How long of an elevator ride is that going to be?!
  • 0 seconds. It's a walk-up.
  • Thread makes me cross that I haven't been to NYC in a long time.
  • I HAVE NEVER BEEN THERE. Only to JFK on the way to YE OLDE LONDONTOWNE. Eventually I will go there, maybe in my late 30s? It seems fun.
  • My first few trips to NYC were pretty ridiculously dorky/embarrassing. So now I will tell you about them!

Trip 1: (not noteworthy, went with family, I was twelve)
Trip 2: free, three-night stay in NYC as a sixteen year old because, oh, you know, I won a Seventeen Magazine makeover contest. Yes, my big fat face was in the magazine.
Trip 3: my high school choir flew to NYC to sing in Carnegie Hall because we won a grammy! Who knew HS choirs could win grammies?

I was a dorky HS kid.

Matt is going to NYC at the end of the month because he's screening at MoMA for the second time in two years!!!! Pretty hot shit.
  • POWER COUPLE!
  • I met flossy in NYC.
  • Must see that Seventeen Magazine issue! Flossy, break it out!!!
  • Flossy, that is so cool! Seventeen Superstar!!!! love it
  • I have to be drunk to break out the seventeen magazine issue. That is the truth.
  • Get Flossy Drunk!
    Get Flossy Drunk!!
  • Get drunk enough to scan it!
  • K5M: Shopsins!!!

Also, Calvin Trillin was doing tours for a couple years of his favorite hole-in-the-wall eateries. If you don't know his writing about eating in NYC (try "Feeding a Yen," available at MCL), I recommend it really highly. Anyway, here are the details on his 2007 and 2008 destinations:
