God I would love to be able to dunk a basketball without cheating just once in my life.
I have a dream about it once a year it seems like.
  • God I want the basketball to start already!

Gimme those games with the dunks and the sweat and the cheering.
  • is it happening? I thought it wasn't happening! I thought they all got jobs in Europe already!!!!!!!!

    BBALL
  • Shredding is pretty cool too.
  • I'm into the "underground games" going on.
    Indie basketball.
    LOADS of dunks.

Just waiting for the lockout to end.
  • Does Gary know if this NBA thing has anything to do with "occupy wallstreet"?
  • Why would you misspell Derek Fisher's name?

They (the players association and owners) are negotiating pretty hardcore right now (almost everyday) as we are a very crucial stretch. If they don't have a deal down by the end of the week they will have to start canceling regular season games.

I follow so many NBA writers on twitter who are at the hotel where they have the meetings and it gets so tense and I get so nervous when the meetings end for the day and it could've gone good or bad.

Many NBA players have signed contracts to play in Europe and Asia but most can get out of those contracts as soon as the labor dispute is over, except for those who have signed in China (3 current Denver Nuggets) they are locked in for the whole season.

I was into the "underground games" in theory, but I watched Chris Paul's charity game from North Carolina on the internet the other night (Lebron, Dwayne Wade, Chris Paul, Rudy Gay, John Wall, bunch of other dudes) but the basketball was TERRIBLE. Not a single ounce of defense was attempted.

Training camps are supposed to be happening TODAY.
I'm so sad about it. I think they are really screwing up if they lose regular season games, it will deeply alienate fans, but they do need to fix the economics.
Why would this happen going into the season where my Clippers have their best chance of making the playoffs in 5 years!
Also, I'm PRETTY SURE that Spirit of 77 will go out of business if there are no Blazer games this year.

  • Oh god, its that time of day, David Aldridge just tweeted:
Sides may be adjourning for today after 5+ hours. Be back soon.
  • I have no idea why I misspelled his name. I didn't notice it until you pointed it out and I know how to spell his name.
  • Let's be clear, Matthew likes Derek Fisher.

I get nervous every day that things will be cancelled and then I look at my "fantasy football" and don't know what anything is nor care.

    LET THE MILLIONAIRES PLAY.
  • Let the stadium workers pay their bills!

But also I LOVE THE NBA. Don't deprive me.
  • I don't even know what is going on- when something makes me angry or annoyed I sometimes just try to completely block it out.

NBA, finish your business, you make me so angry!!!!!
  • Here's what's going on:

Most of the NBA teams don't make money, so they have to re-organize the way the money is distributed.
Right now the players are guaranteed to receive 57 percent of all money that comes in. The owners want that number to be more like 50. The players will go down to 54. There are other issues but this is the main one. Pay cut for players.

Sounds like the meeting was productive today. Tomorrow is SUPER important. If its bad, then games will be cancelled.
  • I WANT THE BASKETBALL TO HAPPEN!!!!!!

I also want stadium workers to get paid!!!!

SO MUCH MONEY gets made by basketball, can't they kick some down?

I don't even know who I mean by "they" but it's not the stadium workers

    I WANT BASKETBALL

Steve's Clippers first chance of doing a great job in the playoffs!
    And
It's the very first year I have actually been interested in any sport!

    WHY NOW?????
  • How's it going today, UBS? Will we get our games?
  • And what does this mean for NBA 2K12? What will happen to EA?!
  • The meeting is happening now. No news until meeting is over. The good news is that it wasn't a super short meeting with dudes storming out! Kobe is at the meeting for the first time today.

NBA2K12 is out today i think
EA didn't make a basketball game this year or last year. Very weird. They are supposed to re-enter the basketball sim market in 2012.
  • The meeting was stalled because they were all reading the live blogging of the apple event.
  • Meeting just ended.
Seems way too short to have made a deal. They made for 4.5 hours.

    Reports coming soon.
  • NBA Players Association President Derek Fisher: "today was not the day to get this done. Not able to get close enough to close the gap."
  • NBA Insider Chris Broussard says: I'm told no meetings scheduled rest of week...D Fisher says preseason about to be cancelled & probably start of reg season
  • Fisher: "we find ourselves where we expected to be: a lockout that may jeopardize a part, or our whole season..."
  • Remember how I talked about that 57% BRI (basketball related income) that goes to the players.
Apparently the players came down to 53% today and the owners came up to 47% (from their previous stance of 46).
The owners only going up to 47 is SCARY, means they are playing HARDBALL and really are OK with missing games because that will make the players start missing paychecks and cave.

    I'm scared.
  • Millionaires cave before billionaires.
  • When asked when they next meeting was Players Association counsel Billy Hunter said "a month, maybe two, your guess is as good as mine."

    BAD STUFF
  • ooooOO
Commissioner Stern now talking. He says they informally offered players 50-50 after formally offering 47%. Players responded by walking out!
  • Won't somebody please think of the chalupas?

    image
  • The players should demand give up a precent in order to outlaw the chalupa rule.
  • I used my free chalupa as a bet in poker. Jason won it.
  • Oh my God I forgot about the Chalupas.
    Cha-Lu-Pa
  • way back when i was a healthy athletic teenager i could dunk a basketball*. no windmills or tomahawk jams, but i could throw it down. dunking is actually really painful- i am surprised these dunk fest champions have never broken their wrists or forearms. the bruises and scraps on the insides of my wrists/forearms were narly.

(*a rubber 'easy to grip' ball, not an official NBA leather basketball)
  • In the list of terrible things that have happened to the NBA chalupas are still worse than this lock out.
  • I am no fan of chalupas (i am more of a bean burrito guy myself), but have to admit that the prospect of getting some special/free thing if the team scored 100 always adds to the fun of attending a game. is your beef with the chalupas themselves, or the whole concept of the 'score 100 pts and everybody wins a prize' idea?

i will say that i think it's some brilliant marketing.
  • my beef is the line of cars at the taco bell on the way home from stadium. real talk.

i like dreaming that the billionaires and the millionaires look at the stadium workers making minimum wage/on call/<20 hour weeks and are like "ok guys, guess what, we just put you in a new tax bracket!" and then the workers would win and everyone would be happy.
  • I've been to many a Blazer game where the chalupa 100 point promotion becomes more important to the fans than the actual exciting (close games). Portland is a smart basketball city, but when the Blazers get near that point in the game it quickly gets VERY DUMB in the name of a 99 cent coupon for garbage food. One time the Blazers were up by a lot and got the ball back with 15 seconds left and had 99 points and in every NBA game in this situation the team with the lead just runs the clock out (to try to score is considered bad sportsmanship) and of course the crowd then boo'd the Blazers for not going for it. I just think the promotion ends up being anti-basketball and disruptive to many games and its weak ass food.

There is another promotion where is the Blazers get 4 3pointers in the 1st half the crowd gets coupons for free Egg McMuffins. I'm all for this promotion! It happens only in the first half(not during the part of the game where we should most invested in the suspense of actual gameplay) and Egg McMuffins are better than chalupas.
  • So you're pissed because at the end of the game, the fans care more about where their next Chalupa is going to come from than the health of their home team. That seems legit.
  • To chant "Cha-Lu-Pa" is not nice.
  • Pretty much, LT. ALSO, I think people actually DON'T CARE about the chalupa that much, but just the concept of winning something (ANYTHING) for themselves and value that more than their team winning.
  • seems you may have some larger, more societal, concerns here UBS2k11
  • Oh does it?

Actually, I just go to a lot of basketball games and I like basketball at my basketball games and I find this thing takes away from the basketball.
I realize my concern is trivial and unimportant, and I take it back.
  • ok,
    edit:
seems you may have some concerns with deep fried taco craven morans at your basketball game

I also do not like the Jr. Blazer Dancers, and I don't like the Blazer Dancers. I think we should retire Blaze and get a better mascot. I love the blimp, but wish it was not a car shape. I like half time shows, but wow, some of them are pretty bad (but that can be fun too). I like the buff dudes that throw the tiny girls. I think instead of Blaze there should be a real pet wolf who is not named Blaze. Maybe named Wolf. Wolf the wolf. And while I'm wishing, why not put in a juice and smoothie bar and lower the price on hard liquor?

Note: You are all in big trouble if I ever buy a professional sports team.
  • And instead of a basketball, it should be a colorful BEACH BALL covered in grease!!
  • Please buy a professional sports team.
