Support Karl Blau!

edited September 2011
Guys, Karl Blau has a Kickstarter to help him fund the return of what was once known as "Kelp Monthly".
He needs a lot of dough and so far his fundraising efforts haven't worked that well. I strongly believe that this thing can happen if all his admirers chip in.
The project is exciting, a monthly CD by Karl in your mailbox. He did this 8 years ago and it was incredible. So many instant classics were born out of that idea.
These are tough economic times and a lot of people are broke. I feel like so many people deserve a little extra cash, but in Karl's case, if I think about how much of his music I got for free, a donation is in order.

  • I want to know more about the vanity poster but I am too embarrassed to ask
  • This man deserves your time, your money, and most likely your soul, but in a really good way. Like, you would let him take care of your soul, and it would come back in even better condition than when you gave it to him.

    THROW DOWN FOR BLAU!
  • What pains me is how can 356 people "like" this on Facebook with only 55 backers?
The internet seems to confuse people.
  • I think one of the limitations of Kickstarter is that you can only pay through Amazon Payments. Probably something to do with the scheduling of the payment, like, it only comes out of your bank account if the project gets funded. But I feel like if they also took PayPal and credit cards on the Kickstarter site itself, it would lower the barrier to donation? It would be easier to throw down $5 or $10 with PayPal, it seems.

Perhaps that is why more people don't donate? Also, sad as it may be, a lot of people would rather spend $5 on beer for themselves than help out a friend.

Yeah Alex, I think you have a point about the Amazon payments thing.
I don't have a problem with people feeling too broke to donate anything, even a small amount. I know a lot of people out there can't afford any extras. I just think it's weird to give it a thumbs up on Facebook, or repost it without chipping in anything at all.
It's like a conscious decision that someone else in the world should foot the bill.
  • Well, there are 2 ways to look at it.
A Facebook like or repost/retweet mean that more people will see it and help the visibility of the project, so if people can't actually afford to support I think this is a nice albeit very small way to help. (I am actually in this boat right now, no extra dough)
There is also the concept of flaccid internet support. A Facebook like meaning absolutely nothing, an empty gesture (that's barely even a gesture).
    Both could be true.
  • hate FB likes
  • Fuck flaccid internet support. I am on a perpetual quest for meaning.

    Huh?
You said you didn't understand, so I tried to help with my thoughts. I was trying to help a conversation.

Saying FUCK this group or that group will certainly not help Karl get anymore money.

So you think if people can't give money they shouldn't be allowed to tell other people about the project? That makes no sense to me.

I am glad you are getting word out about it, but I had no clue if you gave money to it or not, and that actually didn't matter, because you were informing more people about it, which is helpful!

The internet is completely inundated with kickstarter projects. I see 5+ a week that I would give money to if i could afford. I have given to many kickstarter projects, but its very hard right now because LOTS of worthy projects/people are asking for money. People might have exhausted their project support budgets.
  • Oh, no!
    Thank you for explaining!
I didn't mean to sound angry!
I think it's okay to pair "flaccid", as an adjective, with the word "fuck". They seem to go together well. I was borrowing that word from you!
I do feel a little annoyed, since it's a friend who's work I admire, a good cause and I know how much he has given to so many people who are not going to give back. I felt safe expressing my annoyance on this board, since I don't think anyone here is a bad person, or lame, or flaccid. Plus, there's a bunch of people on here who's work is also greatly underrated. It's important for me to be aware of that.
If anyone from UHX donates, it's awesome. If not, it's fine.
I think people should inform one another about this project, yes.
I guess I am just not into giving it a thumbs up in a passive way, why bother?
I do think that seeing a high number of people who are into your thing, when a much smaller number are willing to back you up can be hard on you.
In the case of Karl, he knows a lot of people love and pirate his music, but when it comes down to the wire the record sales don't show the same kind of support. I am pro piracy. It has done wonders for me. But for Karl, who has an expansive catalog, piracy isn't so great.
There is "a vibe" sometimes. People won't chip in for music, whether it's buying a record, paying for a show, or making a contribution to something like this. A lot of people claim to be too broke, or tight on money, but then you see them spend their money on something else. It can be hard not to judge.
I think there is a fine line. It's possible that someone wouldn't want to donate because they are not that big of a fan, or they know someone else who'd be equally or more deserving. Or they have better things to worry about. That is totally legit. We get to decide for ourselves.
In the case of Karl I have met so many people who "love the man" and even claim to worship him. He happens to need concrete evidence of that now and I tried to help a little.
  • I think some of my very favorite Karl Blau songs come from his Kelp series. like the weird garageband jams on "baby nettles" which i was going to burn a copy of and give to Erykah Badu when i met her but unfortunately i forgot about.
Throw down, everyone it is SO WORTH IT.
  • I wish Neneh Cherry would make a new album that was 100% Karl Blau covers. (She could add rap verses too if she wanted).

    Just putting that out there.
  • He is so so close to the goal after days of feeling nervous about it.
    Many UHX celebrities have donated.
    This looks promising.
  • I'm going to be a little heartbroken if he doesn't make it at this point. He is incredibly close.
  • He made it!!!!
  • He REALLY made it.
