dog farts: a serious discussion

edited July 2011
any ideas? his new thing is HORRIBLE FARTS ALL THE TIME.
my vet friend says his food might be too fancy, which is weird...she advocates science diet instead of this hippie food with cranberry and whatever in it. thoughts?

we are going to start giving him yogurt every day but other than that i'm stumped. and if it IS his diet, how do we know what to switch to?????

for various reasons i am somewhat opposed to science diet. i'd at least like the meat in his food to be organic, free-rangey, etc.....literally the least i can do as a dog owner...

???ideas?

you may go ahead and make the fart jokes i know you will make but i'd sure also love some thoughts from the UrHo Friends of Snoopys.

also I believe I just founded a new club: URHO FRIENDS OF SNOOPYS

  • oh man, Ukiah used to fart like a maniac. they would be long and loud, and he'd just sit there looking at you with a goofy look on his face while he was stinking up the place. he even woke himself up a couple times! we recently switched him to a grain-free-fish-protein dog food (for reasons due to his skin) but now that i think about it he is farting less so maybe it helped with that. Snoopy probably needs more meat and less fruits and veggies (and no grain!)
  • science diet aint great food. im sorry, but they pay vets to sell you food. dog farts are bad but that might be the least of your problem. if there is any corn, wheat, or byproduct on the ingredients list then you need you step your dog food game up. quality of food = quality of life for our lil buddies, check out foods like canidae, natural balance, orijen/acana, etc.. if you can find a store that sells these brands ask which is right for your dog.

solution for dog farts: simpler diet. lamb/rice, duck/potato, et al. the more complex the food, the more smellier. i've been feeding gretta (who has been a lil shit lately-more on that) cooked veggies and its like i installed a turbo stink booster.

what city do you live in?
what breed/s of dog is snoopy?

protip: when your hawaiian friends are visiting, make sure to keep the chocolate covered macadamia nuts away from the dogs. chocolate is an upper and macadamia nuts are a downer, sort of a dog speedball. if you can get to it quickly, induce vomiting. effects of chocolate will show up pretty quickly and effects of macadamia nuts will take longer. it took 24 hours before gretta showed anything and it scared the crap out of me, rear legs didnt work, she was lethargic and depressed. ugh. so scary. but she lived.

AND SHE LIVED LONG ENOUGH TO CHASE CATS AND SQUIRRELS OUT OF THE BACK YARD. AND THEN SHE RAN AWAY FROM MY WIFE WHEN SHE WAS TRYING TO CORRAL HER. i was SO MAD yesterday. she's totally a teenager right now. but she didnt know i was mad at her because dogs are kind of dumb. and being mean to your dog later is the wrong way to act to a dog.

  • snoopys food has no grain, but does have lots of fruit and veg. But organic chicken is the first ingredients. i thought i was doing right!

i guess i will look for food with LESS ingredients, is this the consensus? meat and rice. Its true his current food is has an ingredient list i'd describe as "busy."

i hate to feed him fish, unless farmed fish. Hate to contribute to the rape of the sea. Although I suppose no matter what we're raping somebody, just by being alive, us and the snoopys, cats, babies, etc.

is there a good specifically farmed-fish-based kibble out there? I will google.

intense about the chocolate!!! that happened to my childhood dog, it was horrible. I'm so glad she's okay!!!

how old is this mean teen snoopy?? ours went through a shitty teen phase when he was like 7 months...is another one on the way? He is currently a fine noble fellow with no chewing outrages or saltiness.

breed: he is a mutt. border collie is the only one we are sure of (his mom), but it seems certain there is some hound in there, of some sort, and some kind of greyhoundy/pointer vibe.

  • gretta is 3. she has been a handful lately.

we buy this food >> http://orijen.ca/ (the acana variety, has less protein) and we tried a fishy version that didn't agree with her so much. bags are expensive (+/- $60) but i've worked in the pet industry and i love my gal.

also consider the charcoal treats, will help digestion.
  • When I was a teen we had a dog who shat himself every single day. Later it was discovered that his food was too rich (puppy food) and he had outgrown it.

I don't know much about dog food but I know a little about cat food. I feel weird about buying food at the vet's office. There is a feed store near my house and that is where I get our cat her food. It's great, I only have to go once every three months, I pick up a big bag and wheel it home on my bike.

I feed my cat mostly natural meat and rice for her dry food. There is a brand I like that is cheap. I like to give her a little wet food, too. Yesterday I bought this kind that looks so impressive I could probably eat it myself. It has little cubes of squash in it and cooked chicken. It looks like cold Thanksgiving leftovers.

My dad and his girlfriend quite literally raised 40 excellent incredibly healthy and soft cats on Iams. They never buy anything else. I tried that for a while but felt like I should go fancier with this new cat lady.

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR PET'S FOOD, YOU HAVE TO DO IT GRADUALLY OTHERWISE THEY FART A LOT. DON'T JUST GIVE THEM A BOWL OF THE NEW STUFF, GIVE THEM A COUPLE BITES AT FIRST AND ADD A LITTLE MORE EVERYDAY.
  • crap (re: farmed fish)

i dont know what to do anymore!!!!!

can this damn old dog just eat garbage and rocks?

  • well now the dog has diarrhea. Too much yogurt??

he tried to wake us up in the night but failed, and shit on the kitchen floor even.
    poor pup!

I don't remember ever thinking for a single second about my dog's digestive tract while growing up. He just kind of ate whatever and dealt with it. Are dogs bigger wieners now than in the 80's, or what???

Poor guy! Now I'm scared to leave the house
  • how much yogurt are you feeding him? a tablespoon a day mixed in with his kibble is probably more than enough, don't give him more than that.

you probably don't remember your childhood dogs diarrhea because your parents dealt with it. that's one of those special things you learn when you become a dog's one true master- you get to clean up the diarrhea!

i wouldn't worry too much unless it persists. dogs get bugs like people do, and chances are he found some gross morsel at the park or somewhere and ate it and he is now paying the price. if it lasts a more than a couple days then call your vet.

make sure he has lots of good fresh water, and make sure his food and water bowls are clean!
  • yeah this is what we figured. also we figured too much yogurt--we've been doing two tablespoons a day, and while initially I think it did help his poops/farts, I think it went overboard.

Poor little fish! I just made him a dog bed out of old rags and a goodwill blanket.

  • yea, remember dog portions are much smaller than human portions. lots of fluids are good.

crazy gretta act of the yesterday: she was getting all crazy-dog in the backyard and ran headlong into the sliding glass door my mom just cleaned.
  • CLASSIC SNOOPY MOVE
  • its one of those times you actually wish there was a camera filming everything everywhere from every awesome angle.

    slo mo
    sma-a-a-a-sh
  • Wait did the window break?
  • no, fortunately, i guess

    thu-u-u-d

    is a better illustration
  • Give that Snoopy some pepcid- works for me!
  • Give that Snoopy a hit off the bong. "Nature's medicine".
  • he doesn't want a bong hit!
i would truly hate to see such a thing
    he's dumb enough already
