our snoopy is not rascally! He is timid, eager to please, and dainty. Only his ridiculous tongue betrays his doggy nature.
I love when dogs sleep on their back with the legs straight in the air! My old family dog did that! Frank does not but I wish he would.
Do you find that you love the intense, ripe, doggy aroma of a dirty dog? I never used to, until I got my own dog. Now I can not get enough of pressing my face to his delightful soft neck and sniffing. It's amazing how you can bond with all kinds of creatures, not just your own human baby (whose smell I also assume one loves).
i don't like wet dog smell. nor do i like cheerios/fritos week-unwashed dog smell. nor do i like high protein diet food breath smell. sorry.
i like oatmeal shampoo dog smell though and my dog's breath after she eats the charcoal/mint snax. when we got her the previous owners were feeding her bad food and from the table and blah blah bad habits and bad diet and not brushing her teeth and it's been real fun training and fixing all their mistakes.
here's a recent photo of what she looks like from 8:15-9:45, 11-3, 6:30-8 photo cred my wife
is this thread ok for cute dog photos? i mean, it says "warning" maybe there should be an additional caveat that says "there are animal photos and you will want one"
gretta gets washed every 9 days or so. that is that. she's a mostly inside dog, but we hike on weekends (good ones, just got our forest pass !!!) and she is more than content with 1 walk/1 run a day and snoozing on the porch in the sun. she is getting to like the good life (snuggly blankets/sleeping in/being clean). She tolerates baths because we give her a treat when she's done. clipping nails is still kind of tough though.
here's how you start brushing teeth(read this in your most non erotic voice, like julia child or glenn beck): start by gently touching around their mouth, do this for weeks. start to get closer and closer to the teeth and in the mouth. once you can basically rub all up in their pallet you should try to do that with peanut butter or something so they dont take off your fingers. you can buy a finger brush to use and there are different types of dog toothpaste, some are poultry flavored. there is an outstanding dare between my wife and i for the first to try it (sounds gorss but prob ok). and then brush the same way you would brush your own teeth.
other things that will help dog teeth are rope chew toys (kind of like floss for dogs, coz dogs dont floss) but they're not good for all dogs (like mine, she gets pretty crazy with toys).
YES! He is crazy for grass. But he always has been. Huge frantic mouthfuls. I never thought about intentionally giving him greens but maybe we will. We gave him a piece of carrot yesterday and it took him like an hour to eat it.
thanks for this really good advice on teeth brushing. I will start on this tonight!
I am in awe of you washing her every 9 days, I can't imagine. It's such a production and makes such a mess! Plus I guess I just don't mind his dirt...I know he is dirty but somehow it doesn't bother me. I think part of this is that he is NOT EVER allowed on our bed, so it's like, whatever to the rest of the house. If he slept with us I'd definitely wash him like every day.
My Snoopy, sometime last winter. Alan in the background playing a racing game on his ipad. My snoopy is so lazy! Mostly just stares at us with googley eyes.
dogs eat grass because it somehow calms their stomachs. but it can also make them barf- but they seem to like the entire experience. grass is sort of their alka-seltzer or something like that.
for mouth hygiene, you can try Greenies, which are treats that help clean the teeth and gums. there is also sprayable dog mouth wash which can be a little difficult to administer but definitely helps with breath and hygiene. brushing is definitely do-able but the dog will either not like it or totally hate it, but if they trust you and you are firm but gentle it should be okay, but don't expect to do a full thorough job each time. every few years it is recommended by some vets to do a full dental cleaning, which requires the dog be knocked out with anesthesia.
remember that old dog Lucky i was linking to not long ago? well he is in big time need of a home- he's an old 12 year old sweet dude who is not doing so well at the rescue. he is available for free to a good home, and if you are worried about commitment then you could potentially just be a foster parent.
I have been bummed on Lucky all day. I don't know how I can help Lucky. I want someone to take Lucky SO BADLY. Where else can we post this? A 12 year old dog won't live that long...not a crazy long commitment....I want him to have a quiet place to lay and sigh, and gentle pats. Maybe I should take him? I already have a guy but maybe?? Sweet Lucky Just wants to do a good job and be a good friend to somebody.

We don't brush our snoopy's teeth! How do you even do that???? We tried once and there is just no way.
I love all the smells you described.
We wash our dog once every six weeks, put THAT in your pipe! Way less in wintertime. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha FRITO FACE
Also love: the smell of the bottoms of his paws; his smell after he does a face plant into freshly-mown grass
the only smell of his I don't like is the weird muddy pond smell he gets after he's waded in the muddy pond at the dog park. Fishy and gross.

i think we're going to start mixing in some dark greens with Gretta's food coz she might need more fiber.
