dead computer

edited October 2013
I need some advice.

My iMac died. More specifically, it shows a flashing folder with a question mark whenever I try to turn it on. I googled all the possible diagnostic steps but the comp did not respond to any of them. So I took it on in to the mac store yesterday and they say it's most likely a failed hard drive. If this is so, it will cost me upwards of $400 to replace said hard drive. It's a 2009 iMac - not that old.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone out there who knows about computers can help me figure out if this is just the way it's gonna be for me or if there might be some other option for hard drive replacement. The dude at the store said that for some reason I'm going to need an apple hard drive, not another third party (cheaper) one, because of the way my computer was built?

The good news is I backed up relatively recently (April - that's recent for me) and I don't use it that often so I'm not going to pay the Apple people $99 to back me up.

Thanks for your help, UHX!

  • There's no reason to pay $400. You can buy nearly any 3.5" internal hard drive and replace it yourself. Getting inside the iMac is not the easiest, but its definitely doable on your own. Here are instructions: http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iMac_Intel_20"_EMC_2266
(you'll want to double check that it's the right model, but the ifixit site has instructions for other models, too).

First, check your serial number here! Looks like on some models from 2009, you may be eligible for a free replacement.

If it's not, from a couple of forums it sounds like these iMacs potentially used some hard drive with some proprietary Apple firmware…but I agree with Curt, I bet you could find one online and get somebody tech-savvy here to help replace it yourself to save money. I could perhaps do this. Not sure how complex the internals are on these iMacs, though.

  • I bet someone in my office would love to use those tiny screwdrivers to dig into some mac guts... if you can't find someone let me know...
  • You guys are AMAZING! I will do these things asap and save myself some money.

    Thank you!
  • Bugger. My computer did qualify for that free replacement, but it ended in April and they won't make an exception. DAMN. On to plan B.
  • The weirdest thing happened! The Apple customer service guy that I talked to a month ago randomly CALLED ME BACK and basically said he changed his mind and will now cover the cost of the replacement hard drive.

Why would he do that? I don't understand it. No complaints, though!

    Hello,

My MacBook Pro isn't dead, but might as well be. Ever since I upgraded to Maverick, the ol' girl is five-times slow. It is a bummer. I mainly just use the machine to make and play music on.

It is running 10.9.3 and Has a 2.6 Gx Intel Core i7, with 8GB 1600 MHz DDr3 ram and a 850 Gig HD with 251GB available.

I tried using CleanMyMac and it didn't do a whole lot...
Should I buy an external wireless HD and store music on that to save space? (I do use an ext. drive for time machine - so at least I'm backed up.)
I heard someone say that non SSD computers crawl on Maverick and we're just screwed.
Should I see if I have Apple Care and take it in? If so, how do I do that? I think I bought it...

It's so crazy that I was able to make music on a lappy in 06 with all kinds of plugins and now I'm using hardware and running into issues with my sexy late 2012 computer.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
  • Yeah, I'm pretty much in the same boat, and I just use my work MacBook Air all the time. I do think the SSD goes a long way and I'll upgrade that whenever I really need to.
  • if it aint broke dont upgrade
  • running 10.7.5 on my powerbook w 2.3ghz core i5 w 8gb ram hella no hard drive space
