Room Rentership

edited March 2014
My brother's looking for a room/place starting April 1st.

He's also starting a job at the new eco laundromat/cafe on Fremont & Albina, so I'm assuming something north-ish rather than south-ish?

He's a good boy with a limited budget (less than $500 per month, I'd guess). If anybody hears of anything, please let me know!

Thankssss

  • My neighbor is traveling this summer and is looking to sub-let his 1-bedroom apartment from June 9 until sometime between August 18 and 30. If needed, there might be some flexibility in moving in earlier or out later if someone wants to stay in the (very nice) finished attic while Jim is there. $400/month.

Near Peninsula Park, good bike parking, good transit access, near a library and a New Seasons. Lots of kids hanging around, so if you loathe kids, or want to make a ton of noise late at night, it's probably not the best fit.
  • $400 a month for real???
  • Right? How is that real? Mike and I will rent it and sublet our place. Sheesh
  • Well, it's not for very long, and I think he just wants somebody trustworthy who will take care of his place. If anyone is interested, I can message you his contact info.
  • I told my parents
  • OMG I would die to have your parents as neighbors! I would just send Calvin over with a book when I was tired of playing Legos, and they could help with our ambitious community gardening project. I bet your mom would like to come on my fruit gleaning expeditions!
  • "Calvin, go downstairs."
  • No takers, then?
  • Oh, actually, let me tell a friend who's about to move back.
  • Nope, she already found a place.
  • Freddy I am interested! I’m sure someone on the UHX can vouch for my trust worthiness and ability to pay $400 a month
  • Send me your email address & I'll put you in touch with my neighbor. He's a totally legit and mellow dude.
  • rad thanks freddy!
  • I have a friend looking for a room in NE - hollar if you hear anything!
  • I know someone looking to rent a room in her 2 bedroom house in Arbor Lodge, is that too North?
  • I don't know - I think she is looking for a really cheap place, like $500 ish. Does that match up?
  • I don't think so...I think it's more like 600-700 plus utilities
  • Wow! Is that what a bedroom is going for these days? Sheesh.
  • maybe I'm wrong but I thought the house was $1200, so yeah...

  • Yeah, my bro is paying $500 for a bedroom in a smallish house right now…seems like the going rate. I've seen stuff for $400 but it's getting rarer and rarer.
  • That NoPo 600 room is in a big house with lots of usable space big usable attic and big usable basement with only one other person. It's a good deal.
  • The last room I rented was for $375. But that was a ridiculous deal in a small dirty house with unsavory housemates in 2007. I guess those numbers make sense in light of this.
  • yeah, this house is a grownup house that's nice and UBS is right about the attic and basement (Kate had a whole cool recording zone down there). Not to mention big backyard!

Does involve living with a small, rude dog
  • A friend is renting out an apartment in the triplex she owns. She strongly wants a friend-of-friend situation, not Craiglist. Details below; contact me if you want her email address.

    - 32nd Ave just south of Alberta
    - $850 includes some utilities and internet, tenant responsible for gas and electricity
    - One-ish bedroom (quirky layout with open bedroom and a couple of small rooms)
    - Preference for single occupancy and no pets
    - Tons of light
    - European-style shower in clawfoot tub (which means you have to sit down for showers, not a big deal for some people but a deal breakers for others)
    - Landlord (me) lives on site
    - No garage access so its not a great fit for someone with lots of bikes
  • After 3 years with JUST TUB (no shower; no Euro-style hand-held), a Euro-style hand-held situation sounds DECADENT

Imagine, cascades of water pouring OVER you! I can't remember what that is like

Every time we have a houseguest and they go into the bathroom they say "Oh!" and then they say "I thought you were joking about not having a shower"

In conclusion I would live in this apartment

Oooh, I know someone who needs this apartment! It's my drummer Greg Midi!!!!!!!!!!
  • JUST TUB?!

I would literally bathe once a week if I had to do it that way.
  • I would have stolen showers on campus.

I just got into bathing. I like baths. It's only lame on really hot days.
You can also just take a "horse/whore's bath" which is where you crouch in the tub and splash like an old-timey cowboy (or horse, or whore (also can be called a "birdy bath"))
  • Who has the time to run a bath when you get up at 8:20 and have to leave the house at 8:45?

I always used to call it a horse bath and was so shamed when I realized it was really WHORE's.
Not usually naive! P good at language! Big dummy. Still, I occasionally take horse baths to this day.
  • Took lots of bucket baths while traveling through India. I kind of loved it! Except the time I was electrocuted when I went to turn on the water in the $1/night guesthouse I was staying at.

  • I never bathe/shower in the morning; I am a nighttime post-work relaxation bather. So it works for me. My husband is a morning shower dude and he hates it. In the morning I just dunk my head in the sink and slap on deodorant.

  • I'm with your husbo. I need the morning shower to rejoin the world of the living.
  • Me too, unless it's a Saturday and I can sleep the fuck in and just wake up and walk to breakfast or something. From this thread, I can scientifically deduce that #menlikeshowers and #ladieslikebaths

    I prefer showers, dickhole. #alexprefersprawnbaths
  • I prefer hot tub soaks.
  • The house I moved to is looking for housemates/housemate! Here's the ad:

Ever thought about living collaboratively with others? Would you like to live in a positive, supportive environment with people who are more than just roommates or housemates? This may be the perfect situation for you!

Our household is looking for a person or couple who is interested in joining us as we start a small Intentional Community in South Portland. The modest 2 bedroom house is beautifully remodeled, boasts plenty of shared living space, and comes with all the amenities (washer/dryer, dishwasher, well stocked kitchen, nice furnishings, etc.). The main house is complemented by two additional living structures: an adorable micro-home in front and a converted garage in back! Both provide semi-private living spaces and make for a most unique and multi-functional feeling on the property.

Our location—9533 SE Wichita, Ave—leaves us a bit outside of (yet still very accessible to) inner SE. In exchange for the extra distance, we enjoy TONS of yard/garden space, and a very quiet, “country” feel to the neighborhood. Located just south of Johnson Creek Blvd, the house is walkable from several major bus lines. The Springwater Corridor just down the street leads bikers directly into Sellwood in 15-20 minutes.

ABOUT US: So far, we are one couple, one single, and one very sweet cat. The humans among us are 20-something, young professionals who generally keep a pretty active, healthy lifestyle, and enjoy being social (but don't keep very late hours). We love hosting dinners/potlucks and the occasional dance party. We are musicians (to varying degrees) and enjoy being around other creative people. We have a strong DIY mentality and a long list of projects that we hope will make this space even more wonderful!

ABOUT YOU: Must have the ability to communicate positively and have good inter-social skills. Must be willing and able to think outside the box and to approach challenges with an open mind and an eye toward growth. Though not essential, your interests in shared garden work, group meals, and helping to care for chickens are a HUGE PLUS! Musicians/artists/creatives are strongly encouraged to apply! Children and clean, quiet, well-trained pets will be considered on a case by case basis.

COST: $250-$500 depending on total # of community members and which room you take. ALL UTILITIES INCLUDED.

Please feel free to message for more information or to arrange a time to meet us and see the space!
