so even though the National Weather Board strongly advises DO NOT TRAVEL, and recommends that if you must travel you SHOULD BRING A WINTER SURVIVAL KIT WITH YOU, it's still not enough to shut down UB:

the weather report:

BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 2 AM EDT THURSDAY...
GREATEST RISK OF BLIZZARD CONDITIONS FROM MIDDAY THROUGH THE EVENING. * HAZARDS... HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW WITH BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AT TIMES. ACCUMULATIONS... 6 TO 11 INCHES TODAY AND 3 TO 6 INCHES TONIGHT LEADING TO STORM TOTALS OF 12 TO 17 INCHES. * WINDS... NORTHEAST 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH. * VISIBILITIES... NEAR ZERO AT TIMES.

* IMPACTS... CONDITIONS WILL RAPIDLY DETERIORATE LATER THIS MORNING. THE COMBINATION OF HEAVY SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW WILL MAKE TRAVEL EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. VISIBILITY WILL BE DRAMATICALLY REDUCED WITH DEEP SNOW COVER ON ROADWAYS DURING THE PEAK OF THE STORM.

A BLIZZARD WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW WITH STRONG WINDS AND POOR VISIBILITIES ARE LIKELY. THIS WILL LEAD TO WHITEOUT CONDITIONS... MAKING TRAVEL EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. DO NOT TRAVEL. IF YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST TRAVEL... HAVE A WINTER SURVIVAL KIT WITH YOU. IF YOU GET STRANDED... STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE.

the university at Buffalo's response:

UB Officials Monitoring Weather

University at Buffalo officials continue to assess weather conditions in the area. UB currently is following its regular operational and academic schedule. Check departmental websites for any specific changes to public events. Use extreme caution traveling to and from campus.

FUCK THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments

  • Fond memories of college days in Rochester. The kind of memories that made me move to a place where it rarely snows.
  • I am exploring a life option that would involve a cold locale. Genuinely DO NOT WANT.
  • Mass media: "Sky is falling, zombie apocalypse, doom for ever" (buy more ads)
Government: "Expect worst case, don't blame us" (not my fault)
Tea Party: "retire on social security + medicare and do not contribute to future social good. F the planet" (send my check, we are saviors of America on the wrong side of demographics, not realizing)
Institutions: send my peeps home in a non-blameworthy way on the conservative side of weather forecasts (no mater what happens, even zombie apocalypse, "not our fault")
Social media: "Yea me, survived awful" (I'm awesome, as usual)

Reality: anticipated, prepared, weather, whatever, A-OK.

That there would such a thing as the "2014 Polar Vortex" is a little weird.
  • As someone who has been living in the polar vortex, I can assure you that all the media hype is fully justified. Even those who have lived in Buffalo for decades are saying they've never experienced anything like this. Yesterday's storm fully lived up to the warning, plus thunder and lightning. Felt like that bad nature's revenge movie The Day After Tomorrow.
