WEATHER

edited February 2014
Here is a place where we can talk about the weather today!!
I was first alerted to the fact that something weird was going on when in spite of my triple layer of wool and two scarves I was still unable to walk my dog for more than 10 minutes today without getting my hands froze off.
I was next alerted by a text from UBS telling me it is going to snow 5 inches today, which made me say WTF

I don't think I have ever seen 5 inches of snow in portland, have I? Certainly we have had crazy ice storms but this seems next-level.

I am going to the grocery store for supplies. Mostly wine-mulling spices I guess.

Place bets on school being canceled?? I bet "no"

  • PPS:

SCHOOLS CLOSING FOR EARLY RELEASE AT 1 P.M., THURSDAY, FEB. 6
  • Oh, I was being self-centered because I don't teach until tomorrow, so I meant will school be closed TOMORROW.

  • I teach at 1:50 tomorrow, what are the odds do you think??

    SOMEBODY FIGURE OUT THE ODDS

(note: I don't really know what "the odds" means really)

I am giddy from this weather
  • WHAT? Time to visit the neighborhood wine store and buy a million boxes of pre-made soup. I made it around the block ok with multiple scarves wrapped around my face.

I'm seriously into getting snowed in this week, but we were going to do first Thursday tonight. Seems rough.
  • There was one Christmas when Steve was out of town and I had his car for some reason (maybe I dropped him at the airport?) but it was basically impossible to drive it the whole time because eight to ten inches of persistent slushy muck dropped on us and the only time I did drive the car got a flat from some kind of shit in the road and I had to spend four hours waiting around at the Les Schwab on Lombard Street.

    So it's not unprecedented.
  • that is a horrible tale
  • also the wind last night was crazy. The pictures hanging on the wall of our bedroom kept knocking against the wall, because the wind was SHAKING THE HOUSE. I slept with an additional blanket wrapped around my head. And in the middle of the night the smoke alarm told us it needed new batteries RIGHT NOW and we had to get up oh god, how I have suffered
  • i'm doing it, i'm going to the store!!!
    pray for me
  • "I slept with an additional blanket wrapped around my head." -- love this.
  • I highly recommend it! I used to do it in childhood because I was scared of the dark. I still find it very comforting. It adds like 20% warmth to your body somehow, and helps to block the sounds of your husband's snores
  • The last cold snap we had, all sorts of weird things started happening at my house, including a smoke alarm demanding new batteries. Also, I was holding a plastic plate and then it suddenly just cracked right down the middle. GHOSTY.

Portland's animism scene hates cold snaps.

All of this wind is making me very aware of the various gaps in doorframes and such at my house.
  • Just walked 3 miles from Union/Pine back to my house. Cold but nice! Also the Yellow Line MAX northbound is fucked.
  • I did my 2.5 miles home. Going over the bridge was brutal, but otherwise good! Saw so many fender benders.

Mike is walking the dog baby home from work. I'm worried about her poor little dog paws and skinny little body. :(
  • Kind of scared of what's going to happen when this snow melts... Lots of cracks for the water to get into.
  • our snoop doesn't seem to give a shit about the cold. He's stoked, chewing on his ball like normal. I worried about his feet but he didn't care. ???
  • I couldn't make it home from work today, despite our early release! Rear wheel drive plus wimpy tires meant I ditched the freeway before I even hit the terwilliger curves. Camped out with a colleague in SW for the night. Played a real cool game of UNO with her three year old and ate some homemade pizza. Now olymics. Life is pretty ok.
  • @yt I was such a paranoid mom, texting Mike to tell him to carry her home to save her paws, and then they came around the corner gambling and cavorting like the happiest pair. It took her a million years to find a place to make her dog d though, cause she couldn't smell a good place. Idiot.

@wanda seems like a sweet night! Safe travels tomorrow
  • Be careful of the snoops and the salt on the roads!
  • Today is ANOTHER snow day at school!!! WTF! I'm gonna have to find some work to do around here! LOL

snoopy's crying to go out in the snow like a fool. It's pitch dark out there you idiot
  • More snow forecasted for this evening (2-4 inches)
  • OMG
What if school is canceled Monday too?? Fuck!

Who has to go to work today, post here so we can mock you til our throats are sore
  • today on our walk it was too snowy so we walked in the street and Snoopy took two huge dumps RIGHT in the middle of the street. Wish I'd had my camera. It looked so cool. Also there was a guy skiing in the park with a big wolf dog
  • I'm about to walk to work!! I think I'll poop in the streets in protest.
  • I drove someone to work this morning.
    It was fun.
Streets are slick & messy but passable.
Everyone was going slow and being smart. Didn't see anyone get stuck or accidents this morning.
Saw a good amount of snow plows out there. Main streets have been plowed and gravel laid for traction.
  • Here's the Portland Plow Map
showing what streets will be plowed first, next, and so on.

  • Remote worker means no snow day for me :(
  • Me neither! #WFAP (#workingfromalbinapress)
  • We bundled up and grabbed the chains for the car and trekked back to my office to get the car (and also my precious computer). Dog still very much enjoying the snow.

I was a nervous idiot about driving until @arijkem finally smacked me and said it's fine. She was right. It was fine.

We have food now! And more computers!
  • I wanna go SKIING tomorrow. Would it be crazy to drive up there?
  • @arijkem not crazy with chains.
It's supposed to keep snowing in the mountains for the next week!
Which is good cause snow base was half of an average year. Good for skiing and spring thaw and everything!
  • Except a lot more hikes had been accessible than normally in the winter due to low snow fall this year. That was cool.
  • Fun, I have chains and have driven up there in snow before. I think I might just do it!
  • It's really comin' down out there you guys!
Everybody on Lombard was literally spinning their wheels. Very glad I have no car and no need to drive anywhere right now, although it's true that chains are cool.

It's weird how fun the dogs think snow is. Snoop was like a seal, bounding about and getting snow all over his stupid face.

I kinda wish PDX had won the Superbowl and SEA had a pile of snow. #VbStoPeProblems
  • don't you put that hate on us!!!!
  • hey if anyone is on here and would give me advice -
I am flying back in to pdx, arriving in approx 2 1/2 hrs
    (too late for the MAX)

my car is in the economy lot but I hear there is hella ice (in addition to snow).

in yr expert opinions should I
    a) get my car out of the lot then creep down sandy blvd terrified at 15 mph the whole way
    b) pay some overtired cabby $$$ to drive me home
    c) sleep in airport and take the max at 5a (if it is running)

I know crowdsourcing is silly on a saturday night but if anyone is lurking, let me know, is it truly super bad (ice-covered) out there?
  • oh shit! I don't know what I would have told you to do.
What did you end up doing??
    JESUS
    Poor dude
  • EMERGENCY IPHONE ALERT!!!!!

I hope shay shay made it home safe...
  • Shayla!! What did you do?!
  • I took a cab, decided it was well worth the 35 bones (plus 10 ice madness tip) to get home with a minimum of stress. I assume my silent cabbie was from a former soviet republic, because he hauled ass down the highway, not wearing a seatbelt, and could negotiate stoplights in his ancient minivan without any sliding whatsoever.

my flight from SFO was late so I didn't get in until well after 1a, there were a bunch of people sleeping in the airport. Thanks for your concern! I am safely home and will retrieve my car once this mess melts.

  • I never get any of these emergency messages! Never get Amber Alerts, never get Weather Alerts, never get Impending Doom Alerts. Maybe that's the benefit of having this T-Mobile Pay Monthly plan for the last 5 years?
  • I've gotten them before but not today.
  • Just now reading YT's snow blog post. We also had mac & cheese the first night. WHAT GIVES?
  • that was not a joke--everyone in line with me at new seasons was getting a combo of short noodles/cheese/milk and beer. INCLUDING ME

I think it is just a great snowed-in thing to eat
  • I could watch the video of the runner falling down a million times.
  • Not me! Look how hard she hits her head! Poor thing!
  • She's fine, and even has a good sense of humor about everyone laughing at her online. She's actually from NY, and isn't a Portlander.
  • I know, but still. Ouch!
