I've taken Amtrak to Oly and it was wonderful. Drink a wine in the observation car, chat with your boyfriend and/or read a book, and then you're there! Only downside is that the station is a bit far from the heart of town. You could make a friend on the train and bum a ride!
There is no Boltbus. One might consider the Craigslist Rideshare option. The going rate to Olympia is about $10 each way. Friends advise using a google voice number for interactions via Craigslist. One need not use one's real name or identify one's gender initially.
I've made arrangements this way as a rider and as a driver at least 20 times and never felt like I was in a sketchy situation. Occasionally the encounter has even been fascinating and inspiring.
Alternatives:
Car rental: Enterprise is offering a Chevy Spark for $25/day ($10 on weekends). With taxes, insurance, + gas = Probably about $50 round trip.
Train: Depending on when you book, a one way ticket to Oly ranges between $25 - $33. Note the train station is 10 miles out of town. There is a city bus that will take you into town.
Greyhound: Price is about the same as Amtrak and the station is right downtown.
Interesting: Looks like there is a convoluted city bus alternative available on Mondays and Fridays that would take a person from Vancouver, WA to Chehalis on a service called CAP. One could make a transfer in Chehalis to Gray's Harbor Transit routes that eventually get to Olympia by way of Elma. Looks like one would board in Vancouver at 7am and arrive in Olympia at 1pm. Cost just $4 (but you'd have to stay until the following Monday or Friday to make the return trip).
p.s. it's nothing against Pittsburgh. I'm going there for a conference which I have intense ambivalence about. The conference is all-consuming and it makes no difference what city it's in. I guess my only Pittsburgh-related complaint/dread is that I have to spend a thousand hours flying to the other end of the country just to stand in a hotel lobby for 3 days
I really liked Pittsburgh! Just a good normal working city, no bullshit. Beautiful bridges and rivers just like our fair town! Everyone was really nice. At one point an entire bus full of people was energetically helping me figure out what stop to get off at. I had a nice time! their airport has a very bad coffee situation, which wasn't great at 5 a.m. after 3 hours of sleep, but that is LITERALLY my only complaint
p.s. due to horrible scheduling snafus brought about by my nerdy professional organization forgetting to check the football schedule (to be fair, I also forgot to check this) and thus not making allowances for the conference hotel being massively overbooked, my friend and I had to stay in the Hyatt that is INSIDE OF THE AIRPORT. At first it was annoying but then it was so awesome. It's a fancy and extremely comfortable hotel, and I don't know why but you don't hear a single airplane somehow, and let me tell you, at 4:45 in the morning it was PRETTY SWEET to literally step out the door of the hotel and be INSIDE OF the terminal!

there is an hour long bus ride to get downtown, FYI

If one wanted to go from Portland to Olympia on a budget, could one take a bus? Bolt Bus to some connection?
