Comedy! Festival!

edited April 2013
I am so excited about the Bridgetown Comedy Fest!
I love comedy!
I love festivals - it feels like I'm on vacation, but I can sleep in my bed!

I am going to most of these things: http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/bridgetown-comedy-fest/Content?oid=9077410

Are any of my UrHo friends going?

Comments

  • I'm gonna go to my friend's show tomorrow 10pm Mt Tabor. Last year I got pretty burnt out (3rd year of going), so I'm not gonna be around as much this year.
  • I'm not going at all because it exactly coincides with this conference I'm planning!!!!! Which also involves wining and dining people and stuff!
    WTF
  • I'm going!
My favorite event of the year. I'll be all up in it.
  • I never laugh at "comedy." Maybe I should give it another try.
  • @flossy_logs go see Reggie Watts. If you don't laugh, I'll pay your cover.
  • flossy! I feel the same way. I don't really like "comedy." I do like Reggie, though.
  • Do you guys like to laugh?
Do you ever laugh at movies, TV shows, Internet videos, and/or friends?
Then you probably can appreciate live stand up/sketch/improv at some level. It's different if you aren't used to it but if you relax (sometimes people get stressed out by live comedy) the energy can be so powerful and fun. Bridgetown is awesome, they get amazing talented people. Some of my favorite experiences ever have been just totally losing my shit to amazing live comedy performances.
Also I've cried (from tears of uncontrollable joy and poignancy).
  • I think I'd probably be better at it (finding comedy funny) these days than I used to. I think I'm more open to the idea of a comedian. But I feel like I *appreciate* TV show/movie/internet humor more than I actually *laugh* at it. I laugh really hard at people who are silly by mistake, or bloopers, or people who have a super sharp wit and say hilarious things in the moment. The idea of comedy being rehearsed just seems weird.

I should try Reggie Watts. I remember him from back before he was this famous guy!
  • BLOOPERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

comedy is an art though! it's a craft you hone! And when people have worked at it and honed it they get so good at it. Compare open-mic amateur stand-up to Tig Notaro or Louis C.K. and you can see the art/craft/skill at work. It's beautiful!

It's like how storytelling used to be a skill. Homer totally rehearsed and told The Iliad a million times but it was fucking awesome because of that

    I assume

nobody knows if Homer was actually fucking awesome at telling stories
  • a question I assume stand up comedy has addressed.

    Personally I'm more like

  • So... how was the festival?
  • I have a cool story but not to be shared on this public board. I always end up meeting some comedy heroes at this fest.
  • Oh wait - is it over?
  • Yesterday was Day 2, and it ends on Sunday. Strange festival this year - there are fewer "Big Names" than ever, but attendance is massive. Last night there was a line around the block for Mt. Tabor just for wristbands, and another huge line for people hoping to buy tickets. Fest is great though! @DadBoner was hilarious last night.

    Eliza Skinner
    Alice Wetterland
    Howard Kremer
    Moshe Kasher
    Dana Gould
    Karen Kilgariff
    have been faves so far!

Why can't you share story @Marc_Zuckerburg?
    Does it involve DRUGS!?
  • I find that totally titillating!

Did comedy for 11 hour yesterday.
I feel so alive for the very first time.
    P.O.D.!

Saw a podcast taping about mental health.
Saw British guys who make great weird BBC shows that would never get on tv in America talk about their shows.
Saw Iron Comic, a competition where topics are pulled from a hat and the comics have 8 minutes to write material. VERY FUN.
Saw very good improv featuring hilarious people from Christopher Guest movies and The Office and Burning Love and other cool shit.
Saw a show that was a parody of Ted Talks called Chad Chats with funny powerpoints that was hit or miss but when it hit it hit HARD.
Closed the night with a stand up show with lots of people I had never seen that surprised me (thought I would last 1 comic, stayed for 7).

    FUNS!

One more final run of shows today!

Saw Gallagher on the street, ate a hot dog near dalas' buddy Reggie.
  • GOD
    Incredible run-down!!!!!
  • MY STORY IS ABOUT THOSE BRITISH GUYS.

Going to the closing show tonight at the Bagdad at 8.
  • Oh, also had lunch with my buddy Reggie today. Solid 1 on 1 catch up sesh.
  • Saw UBS at the show. Told him my exciting tale.
