THE NEWS AND THE WEATHER

edited March 2013
I had a chance to see Sarah Meadows' show at PNCA last night and I strongly encourage you to see it in person while it is installed, until April 1st.

There are around 15 works of framed photography. The frames are cool because the mats are not all centered, and they sometimes have different proportions relative to the frame. The frames and mats are white and the images are mostly in color but some are in black and white.

The pictures are very formalistic, It pushes photography as a medium capable of abstraction, bringing focus to color and pattern. At the same time they are not sterile but sensual, and as the title of the show suggests, they relate to every day perception. Personally I view them as like individual thought capsules, one neuron firing at a time.

My favorite was the spider. When I say that out loud it's kind of funny because it is rare within this show to be able to identify objects within the image. But the ones I remember are spider, baby, and strawberries. In the past the natural world has been a subject of fascination for this artist, but in this show, plants are given a very abstracted treatment. Trees and leaves become patterns. So it is extra funny when you just see straight up a spider (looking toward the camera). I like that this sense of humor is coming through in this artist's works. Even with the strawberries, to me the first impact of the image is just "wow look at that color." Well the spider too (it's a radial composition in gray and brown). But then I like spiders so I'm like SPIDEY

This show has feeling, it has heart, it has brains, it is art for our generation

    Way to go, Smelly!
  • I'm going to the opening tonight (6-9)!
  • Me too!

Also Genevieve will be at Floating World Comics from 6-9! Let's go say hi to her as well!
  • I have other obligations tonight but am also sold on seeing this amazing sounding show! I will go this weekend!
    Great description Rebo
  • Genevieve is giving a powerpoint at Floating World at 7 specifically so I was gonna try to be there at that exact moment.
  • Sarah also has some pieces in a show commemorating the 5 year anniversary of the Signal Fire program at Merylhurst College down in Lake Oswego right now.
I wen and looked at that show and very much enjoyed Ms. Meadow's artworks.
  • Uncle, are you going to go to Sarah then Genevieve or Genevieve then Sarah?
  • You guys!

Becky, thank you for this awesomely thoughtful review. It's the best thing anyone has ever written about my work (lol, no one really has written about my work).

Boaty, thank you for trekking out to MH Art Gym and hyping that show on this board!

It's going to be a wonderful night on the town- get thee to Floating World, PNCA, other galleries, and then pizza and then Holocene for some cool tunes/weird times!

    LOVE YA GUYZ
  • COOL NIGHT

saw many goddamn critters that I love and like, and met new ones too.

every person had a different favorite picture, which is a cool thing to think about.
    I am so tired!
    g'night
  • My favorite piece changed about 4 times while I was there! I loved them all so much.

    I mean, Wow.
  • A great show!

On first pass through the photos I really enjoyed them and was tripped out by the crops and the textures and quality of the images.

Then I read the well written artist statement and went to a whole other level.

    So thoughtful. So beautiful.
  • There was an artist's statement? Can we see it online?
  • Hmm. I'd rather not post it up for all eternity/scrutiny, but I'd be happy to email it to you!

The binder of info didn't get put out until 5 pm Thursday... I'm slow like that.
