hey guys, thanks so much to Marcus and Shayla for rad presentations last night and to everyone who came out!!! can i get you guys' thoughts about how the event went??? best! crystal
Not sure if it was the Hollywood's call because of scheduling other films, but I think GTKYT works way better in the smaller theater. It feels more intimate, and lends itself better to discussions.
I'm hoping to see the next round of presenters push the limits of the format in some way. Something like creating a fictional story and using YouTube videos as "evidence" of things that happen in the story.
A "no dumb music videos that aren't funny or creative or interesting" policy with regard to audience videos, perhaps? Or perhaps you can submit your name and a video and a committee selects the best ones, rather than just allowing anybody to play anything?
I know, Alex is right. People just playing dumb music videos is a bummer, that part was rough!
DWH were you at the last one? Gary presented in a non-ironic way, stuff that was very sincere. I think there have been several presenters who have not been primarily interested in irony. In fact I would say most, now that I'm thinking about it.
I had a really good time! It took a fair amount of energy to prepare for but the feeling of sharing my personal experience of YouTube with a live audience was strangely gratifying. And hey, Doc, I certainly wouldn't say that the aesthetics were solely about irony. I felt like each of the presentations had a sincere core, wouldn't you say? Yucks derived from observations of naivety and otherness seem to me to be a significant part of the medium. But I personally have love for all the people involved in my selections.
I think the format remains sound. Asking for video responses seems like a good experiment but people may need a little priming before they feel comfortable stepping up. And yeah, a lot of the open mic was truly terrible. As all open mics should be. Allowing anyone to take grips on the corneas of an entire room full of people creates a feeling of wild permissiveness. Like, lets take back the big screen, man! Enough watching, I wanna PLAY SOMETHING. Who could resist?
But I also like the precedence of allowing anyone to step up and cut some of the longer, more indulgent videos short. A slightly more rowdy atmosphere of cheering and booing might inspire people try to play to the audience more efficiently. It's not about sharing something that you respond to, it's about sharing something that an entire room full of strangers might respond to.
I mean, the guy who waited in line for a second go at the podium, and just wanted to talk to us? That was adorable. It's an event that provokes some really peculiar feelings for everyone.
Here's the collection of videos I presented. They share a common theme: occasions when one's ambition exceeds the means available of fulfilling that ambition. (Can anyone think of a more pithy way of putting that? I can't.)
I retract my earlier comment: instead, what if there was just a time limit on "open mic" videos? 2 minutes? 90 seconds? That would reduce some of the painfulness of the shitty music videos/viral marketing stuff or whatever.
p.s. that guy at the podium you mention Marcus is the guy on weird drugs to whom I was referring, if you didn't realize. I found him not adorable but amazing
Did he admit to being on weird drugs? To me he just seemed like lots of guys who do open mic standup. Especially his ending statment "I'm very lonely!" or whatever he said.
I share the same feelings as Marcus. My presentation covered a similar area (I'm afraid to make my video public because of copyright. Should I be?), and the reason I watch these videos is a true fascination with the diversity of thought that can be accessed online. We all know what Ben Affleck wants to show us. I find it super interesting to see what a guy in the Midwest who feels like he has no friends wants to show us.
Yeah, I wasn't going for irony, personally. More things that I return to over and over, that are short (due to the time limit) and still good *to me*...ok, with the exception of the "rap" promo, that is some kind of "laughing at" because it's the biggest clunker I've ever seen. I was gonna call my theme wunder kammer arc, but it seemed kinda pretentious. here's my playlist:
1. Perfect Strangers/Head Of The Class "Rap" Promo: 2. Pickle Surprise: 3. Granny Twitters Via Fax: 4. We've Got That B-Roll: 5. Corridors of Darkholme: 6. Dancing With Bears In Liverpool: 7. Olga Strazheva 1989 World's AA Floor Exercise: 8. Dangerkat Icarus Choreography Class: 9. Ice-T on "Fuck It!":
I too think there should be a time limit, or applause/boos to control the open mic portion, but the kitty leaping was the best response to the stupid sail thing, and it never woulda happened if we hadn't suffered through the other one. I had a good time, and really liked the other presenters and their choices.
I liked the event. I preferred the smaller theater. I would support a statement when opening Open Mic that music videos are pretty much the worst, and to keep that in mind - but open mic should be open. Re: Weird guy on drugs - I'm not super sure he was on weird drugs - I thought he was just taking the piss, and I thought he was not only funny, but had a good point (if you look at his speech as a satire of artistic bio, artistic speaker events, and of the event itself).
Whoa. I'm bummed I missed this one (I attended first two) due to a commitment. Pickle Surprise! This was also used in the presentation in the first event called "Creepy Cute". First repeat?? This will be interesting to monitor.
I know, I was thinking about repeats. Also because during the open mic part somebody played a video called "Drummer is in the wrong band" and I thought it was going to be that amazing drummer in that, like, Korean pop band, but it was a different band!
I am really nervous and glad that you will be there (except it's too bad that me and Sally aren't showing together). I hope I do not disappoint you all too much
that was so funny. I was steeling myself for it being emo but it was so dumb and cool. LT did great! What a fun event I'd had two cocktails before arriving
I so wish you had made that karaoke comment a few days ago mz. I would have had so much fun if I just did 15 minutes of karaoke to a captive audience.
At first I thought for sure I wouldn't post anything online but now I think I might u_o Sally, on time crunch I ended up with an extremely low quality export (I brought a 15 min mp4). That was after I spent most of my hours improving YouTube image quality, of course—a major part of my YouTube stealing practice that I hadn't even thought of mentioning last night. But the image quality was real bad so I am going to do a few tweaks to the sound track and put a nice pretty file up on Vimeo or something. Maybe these days you can get a good picture quality on a YouTube upload as well?
I think they do a great job with these YouTube nights! Emcees keep things flowing, presenters are all different and well-spoken, and the audience is very respectful.
HD YouTube quality is not too bad these days. When I did my presentation, I didn't fuss over the image quality, but I did spend a lot of time re-mixing the audio to match the levels and remove weird hums and such.
I downloaded the "Pro" version. You don't have to pay to use it as a basic karaoke player.
Then, you acquire karaoke files that consist of an .mp3 and a .cdg file. If you search torrent sites for CDG, you find a lot of stuff. Or search for specific stuff like: usher climax cdg
Once you have those files, you just import them into the Kjams program. Then you spend 4-5 hours singing karaoke in your living room by yourself. I plugged the USB microphone that came with Rock Band into my laptop and used that.
I forgot to give credit to all the You Tube video creators. My video was made primarily from Creative Commons open source type videos. And public domain stuff like NASA and movies whose copyright lapsed. Set List Upon Request

I like the mix of classic art/film/video work and "new media"/folk art.
I preferred the smaller theater.

Who's going to GTKYT 4 tonight!?!?
Work schedule.
:(
I did get a personal preview (studio visit) and there is some very cool shit going down... prepare to have an awesome time.
Just share your thoughts and videos with a like-minded crowd. It's fun and you'll be great at it!
Also, it's fun seeing friends on a Monday night!
Also, if you weren't there please google "How to catch a kangaroo."
LT did great!
