Confused By Technology

edited December 2012
I just somehow accidentally opened iChat for the first time in literally years, and didn't realize I'd done it until Alex (don't know how to do strikethrough, sorry) chatted me. Then I was like WHAT and WHO IS THIS and HOW DID YOU OPEN MY ICHAT??? Alex was understandably a bit thrown off by this.

Earlier today I wrote "learn about spotify" on my to-do list

  • I want you to invent software
  • How 'bout software that really IS soft, for a change?

    What's up with that?
  • (I think it might be a metaphor)

    ;; -- })
  • I have a technology question:

    I have a monitor... I have a keyboard/mouse... I need a brain.

What's the best "tower" for my buck? I'm pretty sure I want an apple product. Ya'll got some suggestions?
  • you might like a good little mac mini
  • YEAH, GET DAT MAC MINI. Or get a Mac laptop and hook it up to the monitor/keyboard/mouse for maximum power combined with portability. Mac mini is probly yr cheaper option, though.
  • I have a mac laptop but I'm sick of having like 4 things out on my desk at all times. Feeling me?

I'm going to look into that mac mini! Is that the same as a PC tower?

You're talking to a girl whose had only 2 laptops in her life... each lasting 5-6 years each.
  • They start at $599. That kind of seems like a good deal. What's the catch?

I think they're just not meant for the heaviest of duties, like making complex video or audio or playing all night on your World of Devils online gaming account. If you are looking for basically a media center/internet device, it is perfect.
  • I'm excited about this tip.

    L_T I love you
  • The catch is also that you need to buy the monitor and keyboard and mouse, which you already have. They're good little computers.
  • I have all of those things that work wirelessly with USB port. I'm assuming this maching has USB port/s.

Also, it can do DVDs, right?

  • The new Mac Minis do not do DVDs.
Apple only makes 1 computer currently that has an optical drive and thats the huge antiquated Mac Pro.

I think a refurb'd or lightly used Mac Mini is perfect for what you want. They are great little computers. I've used one.
  • just be sure that all your various peripherals (keyboard, monitor, etc) are not only compatible, but have the matching connectors with the Mac Mini. Apple is notorious for changing that shit with each release. I bought a Mac a couple years ago only to bring it home and find that I also needed to buy an additional $129 adapter so that it would work with my Apple monitor. they are evil weasels.

  • I'm scared again.

  • The thought/idea of buying a new thing like this freaks me out.

This is why I used an HP laptop that gave me 3rd degree burns when I put it on my "lap" for SO MANY YEARS.

Then I bought a new laptop (you know, the macbook everyone gets upon HS graduation).. which I still have. And I'm coming up on my 10 year reunion!!??

    What. the. fuck.
  • How am I supposed to play my DVD? I guess I could use my laptop? Is it OK if I talk out all my worries here?
  • Yeah, rip all your DVDs with your laptop and put the files on your new computer.
  • I own one DVD -- it's my HS graduation.

    I'm talkin about my Netflix.

I need to buy a dongle.
  • A real DVD player is probably like $20 these days.
  • could also just go pure streaming?
    is that helpful?
  • I bought the expensive thing. I now own a new computer.

I have not even plugged it in yet. I'm overwhelmed.
  • you will like it!

whenever I have to buy expensive new technology I talk to Uncle Boats for hours about it then finally do it and am scared and then am always really happy with it.

  • I totally texted him after I bought it.

Also, WTF the apple store??? It was AWFUL! There were 500 people in there. At least. The guy that helped me was chatting or something on an ipad the entire time. I felt left out. I still gave them all of my money, though.
  • Lolo, I am glad to help you too ^_^
  • @lolo You texted me?
    I did not receive.
  • That lil box will be a solid dude. Just reboot him about once a week, check for SW updates and turn on your firewall settings. Sure there are more brainy than me osx peeps on UHX.

The Apples products tend to have a longer lifetime of SW updates and industrial design currentness than most, but not infinite.
  • I noticed that @uncleboatshoes2011. I re-sent.

I have technology failures going on all over the place.
  • My little laptop has lasted so long; it would still be going strong if I didn't get some of the keys wet (my 1, a, q, z, backspace, volumes) do not work; SO DUMB.

    Must get upgrade.

Whew. I'm going to plug my new box in 2013.

Apple Store: I am not one of their people either. Maybe I dress wrong? Maybe it is too long since I had a haircut? Am I too fat and old for their tribe? Do I damage their brand by stepping into their store? Am I subject to some kind of secret invisible-making device? Why do I always feel like I am interrupting when I go in there? Is the $5000 they got from me in the last few years not enough for them to be friendly and not just tolerant-professional? Can they smell that I'm not one of their $100,000 customers? Is my denim bad?

I bet it would be different if I went in there with JB. Maybe he has an rfid implant?
  • I will never go back to the apple store. 10 more years!
  • Marky mark suckerberg can you please remind me the name of your iPad app
  • Guess what I found it yesterday because it was featured in the app store ^_^
  • I think you will particularly like the Mixer, as it allows for very slight variations on color, useful for your color field work.
  • @DrJ - which JB?
  • Justin Bieber, right?
  • I assumed he meant our Apple-tattooed friend.
  • Oh right, I forgot about that. I was wondering how Dr J. knew that my JB was wearing a black mock turtleneck today. But that makes more sense.

    All JBs everywhere.
    ;)
  • All JBs everywhere wear black mock turtlenecks.
  • ok that picture but all the hands strangling him

Paper is a fun painting program
There are many things I wish it could do, like lock so it stays still when you flip the iPad, but it is fun to work this way. Mixer is a weird new way to select color.
  • image
It's on now... This is from your competitor program Brushes
The same app my favorite artist David Hockney uses
I LOVE painting on the ipad
  • Rad, I'm glad you're getting into it. You can turn off the iPad flipping in your iPad settings under something like "rotate lock". I have mine set so the little switch near the volume buttons locks the rotation.
  • Now that you've fixed that problem.... Can you add an eye dropper tool to pick up color by pixel?
