Bad writing contest

edited December 2012
The contestants:
Thomas Friedman

Pussy Riot probably is no Tupac, but the band members were iconoclasts who broke the mold, albeit in an offensive and obnoxious manner. Isn’t that what critics said about Steve Jobs?
The bassist from Attack Attack!

If you can't sleep at night, consider your thoughts by the end of the week while your conscience is talking to you before you goto bed, and wake up to the next day intending on being comfortable in a comfortable supportive environment. Your family is what I recommend. If you claim no family then your legal guardian. There's a reason that those people are feeding you everyday... Because they want you to succeed. Some things fear mongers will retreat from.

Do not be defeated, instead try what seems to hurt you in order to make what you know is right. Sacrifice...Whether it's friends...Items, imaginary people...And I really mean that, I'm not smiling after that last point...You are what you think.

Also im not homosexual.

  • BOTH ARE SO BAD

Friedman is worse though because he has been given like the top writing gig in the country
  • Thomas Friedman is CLEARLY a coke-head, right? I really want us to acknowledge this, as a culture.
  • I do like the idea that you only feed those you want to succeed.

NO FOOD FOR YOU! YOU ARE DESTINED FOR FAILURE! HA HA HA HA!

  • I love how Salon called Freidman "the worst actual human being" employed by the NYT. They also called his readership "semi-literate MBAs"

    deeper burns

Also "and for years the NYT has decided that Maureen Dowd calling every female politician in the country a bitch is the best use of that platform"
  • you guys should know that that AA bassist rant is essentially undifferentiated from like 40% of the papers I grade
  • GREAT image
presumably from Mike's own business clip art collection

YT, have you ever heard the music of Attack Attack? The classical piano breakdown at 1:42 is amazing. And then at 2:48 it's like a different band!
  • whoa. It's like scream metal and then somebody starts doing romantic autotuned R&B vocals on top of it? Then fun electro dance band!

What is this band's deal? I had never heard of them until the bassist made nerd-headlines with his inability to grasp basic English grammar and syntax. Who likes them, is it kids? Certainly not real hard core people right? They seem kind of Biebered out, to me, in a way

also do people really squat that low when they play guitar

  • The low squatting has resulted in the genre name "crabcore" and I am not making this up.

I think their audience is primarily suburban teens/warped tour, etc.

Emo has gone a deeply bieber direction in the last few years.
  • crabcore!!!!! HA HA HA AH

  • "I'm so confused right now."

I really am at this point in my life where I feel out of touch with "the kids" for the first time. I can't tell the difference between popular critically adored artist Grimes and Blood on The Dance Floor (also of Warped Tour fame.) )
  • edited December 2012
    rage against the owl city
  • that Blood on the Dance Floor video is HORRIFYING.
  • oh my GOD I hate it so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • edited December 2012
wait til you hear their song about sexting.

edit: and the followup hit "revenge porn"
  • How many community college theater programs were harmed in the making of that video?
  • Attack Attack, on the other hand, is delightful. I like that their video babe is basically just Pam Anderson with some lip rings!

"Jdawg, do you like One Dimension?"
    "You mean, One Direction?"
    "Uh. Yeah."
    "No."
    "Why not?"
    "Um."
    "Too phony?"
    "Yeah."

She went to school as Amy Winehouse yesterday. (Sprit Week: Famous Person Day)
    Stumbling through parenthood.
  • LOL, "One Dimension". Amazing dad gaffe.

Amy Winehouse!! With the huge cat eyes on little face!!!!!!?

How did she choose this star
  • edited December 2012
No make up, just her hair up in a quick bun with clips and a Winehouse-y frock.

My lady friend has been teaching her a lot about soul singers.
  • Speaking of... I believe we had a verbal agreement that there would be an email introduction.... (friendly reminder)

  • One Dimension is so funny. DAAAAD!
Reminds me of the old, old joke, "MOM! It's not THE Pearl Jam it's just PEARL JAM! GOD!!!"

    SO EMBARRASSING!
  • i have an unfinished one direction song parody about adorno that I'm writing. maybe it's a good xmas break project.

"Because your choices now all are illusory
differences just confirm the system's validity
and that means you've got no meaningful agency
    you don't know oh oh
    you don't know you're dutiful
    oh oh
    that's what makes you dutiful"

(my own entry in bad writing contest)
  • What!!!!

Somebody give this man a million dollars
  • whoa, i know that house in the Attack Attack video!

  • ALSO- did you all see this on SNL a couple weeks ago?

can we talk about this? is Rhihanna trying to be ironic? is this done in earnest? i feel like kids these days aren't in on the joke...
  • you mean how she has no pants
  • I think it's awesome!
  • I do think there is a difference between the jaded Gen Xers and the current kids who are way more sincere, even when they're doing stuff that would previously be considered ironic. They lack the sneer for the most part.
  • There was a discussion about this on here I believe.
How she is ripping off the "sea punk" movement and Jacob Ciocci's great piece about cultural appropriation in this deep internet age of cut and paste non attribution work.
  • What do you think about it?
  • Kevin did you see Matt Taibbi's blog:

    http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/taibblog/the-grenade-of-understanding-winners-of-the-write-like-friedman-challenge-20121115

"In order to salvage Syria, which is and isn't falling apart, we need to follow and not follow the path we did and didn't follow in Iraq. That requires a hand grenade, both post-explosion and pre-explosion, and a pregnant woman who has and hasn't had a pottery baby. We should allow our enemy, the lawyer Russia, who is our friend, to get and not get involved in the non/crisis.

Using (and not using) our Iraq experience, or lack thereof, we mus(n)t continue, or stop, our current path by digging a hole, and filling it in, with the bones of those we saved by being there, as we allowed them all to be killed. We can throw their bones into the hole, which we shouldn't be digging.

If 2006 has taught us anything, it's that 2012 is 2006 on steroids, minus steroids, in 2003. I can sum up by saying I stand by and repudiate all my previous statements about Iraq as regards Syria (as regards Iraq). I have NOT taken this acid that is corroding at my soul, but I am tripping balls."
  • This video and the "controversy" made me like Rihanna more.

I thought the execution of the video and the performance was pretty half assed. It's not one of her better songs, and the use of the imagery felt disjointed and tacked on.

  • if you watch the SNL vid carefully, you can see some 'Photoshop Background Checkerboard' in a couple places- clearly instances where someone goofed and forgot a layer or rendered things incorrectly. Crazy to see that sort of mistake on something so big.

I am so out of the loop fashion/style wise, but when I see videos like these i can't help but to think of early 90s thrift store style where we'd try to find the most ridiculous shit ever and wear it with an obvious nod and wink. it's like that stuff has now become a retro style, but somehow the nod and wink part didn't make the translation. I wish I understood this better!
  • I think the checkered background was intentional. It's part of the aesthetic.
  • Maybe she saw the Rob Walmart album cover and took it next-level.

I think it is an intentional aspect of the fashion... and it is just that, fashion. It is not meant to make any big statement, it is just "cool." And on that level, it succeeds!

Just looked at the BOTDF video again with T-bird. She says everything in the vid is at the mall at Hot Topic. My new look for lucky '13!
