snow leopard / iTunes / old computer question

edited December 2012
So my iTunes is too old to plug my iPhone into anymore
but my OS is too old to get the new iTunes
do I really have to buy snow leopard and if so how can I be sure my computer isn't too old to run it

feel like everything's falling apart around me

  • Go to your Apple menu, then About This Mac, then click "More Info." The "Model Identifier" will tell you what model computer you have and you can use that to figure out if it's supported by Snow Leopard (or the newest one, Mountain Lion).

Someone you know like Mike or UBS probably has an install disc. Or I think it's only like $29 to buy it legit?
  • I am happy to buy it, just want to make sure that's what I should do first!

it says I have macbook 4,1

god, I don't even think I have enough disk space to install a new os

    jesus
  • ps thanks Zuck!
  • (Buy a new computer!)
  • I hate planned obsolescence so much
    ruining the earth
why can't i keep using my computer! god!!
in conclusion, I will buy a new computer
  • You know, as a web/app developer, I'm not sure it's "planned obsolescence" so much as "it gets harder and harder to support all the legacy platforms as new innovations & devices are introduced" - at some point you just have to say "I'm not supporting Internet Explorer 5 from 2001 anymore" and just go with it, you know? Even though old people might still be using that browser or whatever. Sorry, I can't spend hours every day supporting your antiquated browsers.

My first Powerbook lasted 6 years, and I'm on 3.5 years on my current MacBook, and I'm still using an iPhone 3GS from '08 or whenever, and I'm generally pleased with those types of numbers...
  • yeah fair enough. But it IS weird...like, in the past, if DVDs got invented or whatever it didn't mean your VCR stopped working.

I guess it's more about the transition to software from hardware. New blender technology doesn't make my old blender obsolete, etc.

I just hate thinking about the ever-increasing pile of old computers growing in China giving everybody mercury poisoning or whatever
  • The problem is even worse, because when every object has a computer in it and is on the network, they will constantly be infested by malware. If someone can develop a connected consumer product that can remain malware-free for more than 5 years, they will make a mint.

There is a photographer in Seattle who has done projects on this and other stuff: http://www.chrisjordan.com/img/gallery/intolerable/cellphones2.jpg
  • Those photos are so gnar. Not to be so classically American but I was surprised those pictures were in Atlanta and shit.
  • From what I can tell, your MacBook can run Snow Leopard, but it seems like it's right on the cutoff for Lion or Mountain Lion. I'm still running Snow Leopard myself, because some of my apps don't work on Mountain Lion. You can probably get at least another year out of it running Snow Leopard.
  • oh, my god.
    those pictures
