Sharksgiving?

edited November 2012
What are people's plans for the Sharkiest holiday?
I really want to have one at my house, but my house is so small. Thoughts?
would anyone want to stop by or do you all already have plans?
What's the deal, is what I'm asking, with Sharksgiving??

  • I don't have plans yet, and I want to eat SO MUCH FOOD!

Me and Robby are going to take a plane to DTW--conveniently, our home towns are an hour apart ^_^ We shall meet of another's people, and I will introduce him to my old best friends at the art museum, and he will take me up a crumbling art deco stairwell to his favorite panoramic view of Robocop land.

  • There'll be people at my house in the evening and more are welcome; It's a giant castle made for dinner parties and Mike keeps leaving bottles of booze there, so that'll be fun!
  • HEY!
  • Just to clarify, YT is talking about the day after Thanksgiving, right?
  • @arijkem doesn't understand Sharksgiving, even though I have explained it to her MANY times! (<--1st fight)
  • I'd love a Sharksgiving on the Saturday or Sunday after Thanksgiving! (I'll be in MT for the real thing.) Maybe just a pie party and then bowling or something?
  • My crew will be in New Mexico, but we will miss you all.
  • Tru. Franksgiving block.
  • Seems like Sunday we should gather, eat pies and leftovers, and then go bowling. Or maybe bowling first?
  • friday could happen at the boathouse. lots of room here. but saturday morning i fly away...

Me and J-Dawg trolling VbStoPe, rolling down the window, sniffing for gravy.
  • I was talking about Sharksgiving, which is Thanksgiving Day, Thursday.

    There is only one Sharksgiving.

I don't know what anyone is talking about.
  • No, YT.

Sharksgiving originated as a friend thanksgiving that took place the next day or another day other than the Thursday.
You liked the term so much that you have now conflated it with the original holiday, which is OK, but do not confuse the origin and the origin story and the pilgrims and those who wish to use it in the traditional way.
  • oh no!!!
    I fucked up
  • Yeah, I thought you were the one who invented it! :)
  • if only! I'm pretty sure Mike invented it
there is a chance his choice of term was influenced by my love of sharks and of thanksgiving? But i don't really remember how/if I entered the history of its nomenclature; perhaps Mike can say

I'm excited to have both Thanks- and Sharks-giving this year
  • Shark's gravy.
  • OK. Sharksgiving.
Let's meet at Interstate Lanes at 4:00 on Saturday and bowl our hearts out then retire to my house for pie and beverages. Please feel free to bring pie and or beverages. (PM me if you don't know where I live.)

Does that work for you dudes?
  • I believe the story of Sharksgiving goes something like this...

Once there was a terrible dilemma where friends could not gather on the national feasting holiday of Thanksgiving and so it was decided they would instead meet two days later for a celebration without the burden of obligations to family. While the terms fakesgiving and friendsgiving were being bandied about it was recognized that only because of the fear of missing Thanksgiving did this second holiday come forth, and so it should be named in accordance with the greatest fear a human could ever know: Sharksgiving was born

(see also, Sharks-mas, New Shark's Eve, Martin Luther King Could Win In A Fight With A Shark Day, Landshark Day, Shark Wednesday, Shark Saving Time, St. Shark's Day, Sharquinox, Good Sharkday, Shark Sunday, Cinco de Sharko, Shark Mom Day, Sharkorial Day, Indesharkdence Day, Rosharkana (Jewishark Holiday), Sharkoween, All Shark Day, War Shark's Day, Black Sharkday, CyberSharkday, and Kwansharkza.)
  • Also just regular Sharkday, for when you have to spend your birthday with family!
  • Also, who all is in for BOWLING!?!? I am in.

terrible at bowling? perfect! Curt invented a new set of rules for bowling that equalizes all players but is still skill based! INCREDIBLE!
  • I'm so down for bowling. I have a gift certificate for that place somewhere!
  • I want to know Curt’s rules.

    I wish I could go.

    I’m good at bowling.

Bowling is crazy expensive here. Like you could easily drop hundreds of dollars.
  • I am absolutely horrible at bowling, but I'm in.
  • I probably won't come to bowling, but can I come to the house after?
I truly hate bowling. I just realized that this year.
  • Bowling is possible. My family will probably arrive about 6pm just as the party is leaving but it will still be lovely to see you and to wave. ;)
  • @YoursTruly
what is it you hate about bowling (my roommate suggested it must be "holding heavy balls or wearing other peoples' shoes")
It a task that I do so infrequently that I can't imagine hating it cause it seems so novel that by the time I remember how it works and feels its already over.
  • I used to feel that way but then the last couple times I have gone I have just really not enjoyed it. On a pitiful and embarrassing note, it legitimately hurts my wrist and fingers and seems to directly target the place on my weird leg that's chronically injured. But I also don't like it as a social activity, because it's like, you're trying to socialize and talk and have fun but then someone's always like "your turn" and you have to get interrupted, and so then the actual bowling starts seeming grudging and half-hearted, like, why am I getting up to roll this heavy ball randomly every 3 minutes while also trying to hang out with friends?

I also don't like to think about how dirty my hands are after touching the ball and trying not to touch my face. And I don't like the food options or the alcohol options at your average bowling alley.
  • "holding heavy balls" = accurate

Come anyway! We're going to bring Calvin, who can't bowl. Jessica almost certainly won't bowl.

Beer in the shape of a bowling pin!

I have this weird memory of dropping by Sharksgiving while in portland one time on the way to get my hair cut? Steve was buying creamed corn or something? I wasn't around for food. Why was I there?
  • Was it fun?

Steve's (whoever that is) corn soufflee is famous

Maybe I ran into steve in a Safeway? Why was I in a Safeway in Portland?

It was fun but I think I only stopped by for 15 minutes before I went where-ever else I was going.
  • the corn souffle was delicious. I had seconds. SO GOOD.
Everything was incredible. It was the biggest plate of food I ever ate and then I ate another one
  • I will be spending my Sharksgiving weekend in central Oregon. Have fun everybody!

  • Whoa.... that means today!? I can do it!!!!

Did anybody watch any of the TV Specials?

    BAD 25
    LIZ AND DICK

I am super excited to watch both!!!!
One is said to be really good and the other is said to be really bad...

I am glad that the Lohan criticism has been lighthearted. From the twitter and blog critic universe, the tone is overwhelmingly one of delight, rather than disgust. For this, I am pleased. Also, Lady Gaga told her she did a great job, which is what Lindsay needs to hear.
  • I watched Bad 25.
I enjoyed watching it (some great footage) but thought it was kinda crappy as a documentary.
  • Oh, apparently the televised version isn't the full cut (which is being released in February) which might explain some of the structural problems I had with the thing/movie.
