Wear helmets and think good thoughts

edited November 2012
On Friday morning my littlest brother was hit by a car on his bike and had to go to the ER with a broken rib, broken jaw, broken hand, and bruised everything. If he wasn't wearing a helmet he would be so super dead.
His first surgery to fix his jaw went well, tomorrow he goes back in to fix the arm, and it looks like he'll heal up pretty good.
He has a fucking sweet lightning bolt shaped scar on his forehead now, so I guess his halloween costume is on lock for the next few years...
Anyway - think good thoughts for my broheim, send me your "liquid diet" recipes, and wear your bike helmets!

    oh no! Jesus.
Recently I have been not wearing my helmet, and now I will stop. This is so fucked.
Good vibes for your brother! I'm so glad he's okay!

In 8th grade I broke my jaw and had to be on a liquid diet. It sucks. At first my mom tried so hard to make all kinds of tempting liquid meals but by the last couple of weeks I was just straight-up living on strawberry milkshakes.

is his jaw wired shut? Or have they developed less medieval healing methods since I was a kid? If wired shut, here are my suggestions for getting through it:

Real thin, super-food-processed (no chunks) smoothies with protein powders and kale and stuff.
    milkshakes
thin soups--make a regular soup and then puree it
avocado shakes--puree avocado, coconut milk, etc.

basically variations on soup and smoothies, trying to max out protein. Like put some cashews in there with the avocado in the food processor. Different nut milks.

he's also going to want to invest in some serious mouthwash, because you can't brush your teeth and it is DISGUSTING. Get some tea tree oil/fluoride/peroxide shit going on up in there.

he should also always have heavy-duty pliers/wirecutters on hand in case he has to vomit. This is so intense but serious. Talk about a horrifying way to die. Mine were always on the top of the toilet and every time I used the bathroom I'd stare at them and get super freaked out.

  • It isn't wired shut - they do something different now, but I forget the specifics...
I think that it involves some kind of plates / bolt combo inside his mouth, and they put rubber bands around them or something? I know he can't chew, but he can talk. He's in a good mood. He has an awesome live in girlfriend who is taking awesome care of him (I might want to look into getting one of those) and I bought him a big stuffed Totoro to help him heal and embarrass him. So far I'm thinking: blended ravioli and such; those indian food packets from trader joes, yogurt and fruit smoothies, and soups...
  • Miso soup is quite nice. Best of luck to your bro.
  • i had my jaw wired shut for six weeks when i was a teenager. it was awful!

but i can't recommend enough a Vita-Mixer- a gadget that did not exist when i was a teen but i've often thought "if i had only had this when my jaw was busted..."

basically, it is a blender on steroids that will mix up anything. fruit, bread, nuts, veggies, meat, you name it the vitamixer will turn it into a smoothie. it can do his chewing for him the next few months!

Sorry to hear that story. Glad it didn't turn out worse.

YT - YOU BETTER WEAR YOUR HELMET!! GEEZ!

I had a crash two years ago and would have been sooooo dead if I hadn't worn the helmet.

Car pulled in front of me as I was heading down hill at a good clip. Flew over the handlebars like a missile and hit the car head first.

    Srsly ppl. SRSLY!
