Sandy...

edited October 2012
...is a cute name for a hurricane.

NYC is going down. Surge expected to be 5 feet over flood stage tomorrow night. That sounds like a lot.

  • I like that its name is kind of androgynous.

  • keep us posted Matthew, I'm fascinated
  • Update: Waiting for everyone to play their Letterpress turns. Listening to the Deviants. Laura is doing crafts. Still windy. Gonna eat some cake.

Kind of addicted to the whiny, liberal art undergrad, live-blog Tao Lin is hosting on Thoughtcatalog.com.
  • yeah, I'm loving it too!

some of these updates I'm reading are pretty intense. Police ushering people away from the waterline; collapsing construction sites; somebody found a piece of their roof on the ground blocks away while trying to find an open liquor store
  • This whole situation feels so "West Wing". Like some fictional drama where the storm of the century hits right before the election to make the President look good/bad.
I really hope damages will not be too severe in the end. The footage from Maryland and Virginia is intense. Also, let's not forget the Caribbean.

Exactly. Retribution for saying 'Clean Coal' to get votes in southeastern Ohio.

Power to be shut off in Manhattan south of 34th street. (!)

  • @DrJ: Yeah, I want to hear people talk about global warming.
This is definitely global warming. Pretty late hurricane season, pretty far North for a storm of this magnitude.

Did people already forget about "The Day After Tomorrow"?

But seriously, there were amazingly smart conversations after Katrina about the risks of having much more huge storms of this kind if we didn't stop depending on fossil fuel. Whenever Romney disses the President for investing in green energy I cringe because there doesn't seem to be any type of arguing back with him that green energy is absolutely essential at this point.

  • Thankfully we figured out yesterday where the water was leaking into our basement from, and fixed it in time. So now we're just hanging out with the cat and a warm woodstove.

We drove along Rock Creek to get some provisions earlier this morning and it was VERY HIGH. many tributaries that are usually dry all full of water. beautiful and surreal.
  • Something I like is some people's urge to go and check it out. It's a bit stupid at times, but curiosity would get the best of me, too.
  • "The tree in front of my apartment is starting to sway so much that it is actually lifting the sidewalk up. It looks like the sidewalk is ‘breathing.’"

Listening to their local NPR station WNYC

High tide tonight at midnight, a couple of hours after Sandy comes ashore.

    Full Moon!
  • People in SC would totally surf the pre-hurricane waves. We never got waves that decent otherwise. (Not meant to imply that I myself surfed those huge waves.)

Current storm surge map has lots more brown in it now. 50% chance surge will be 7 feet or greater.

NYC set up shelters to accommodate 70,000, so far only 3,000 had checked in. Will be closing all bridges in two hours. Subway is closed and may flood. People will be without power for days. Floods may be followed by two feet of snow...

Where are you Matthew? They say there could be 80 mph gusts in the city. Might be good to tape windows, buffer with blankets & cardboard.
  • WNYC's player won't work for me. Their page has been loading for over half-an-hour.

    Maybe Matthew's internet is down?
I just hope that him and L. are under blankets snoozing the storm away with the cats.
  • Matthew is too busy running around town with a horse mask on.

Too bad! WNYC is a nice stormy listen. Maybe just try again?

Mayor Bloomberg is on right now announcing that the evacuation period is over. At this point it is too dangerous to move so people are ordered to stay where they are.
  • Internet went down. Really windy now. Building shaking.
  • Internet is back.
  • Matthew be safe and don't get your new iPad wet!
You got AppleCare on that thing?

    Also, you have a challenger:

  • My mom's name is Sandy.
  • I can't believe how obsessed I am with Sandy. I usually don't follow stuff like this. Something about it is really hitting a nerve. These photos of full-on car-floating and waves on the lower east side! Jesus
  • Shit Matthew, that photo!

What do they do with the animals in the zoo????

  • I think all the zoos are on high ground
  • Who want to look inside a NY luxury apartment?
Ehe outside of the building fell off, so you can take a gander:

  • @nyscanner is messed up tonight. Lights are still flickering.
  • Look at how many of the Manhattan lights go dark to the left of the flash in @Owls video. (!)

    Good to see you @Matthew!
  • Andy said she saw a photo of someone snorkling in Brooklyn! EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
  • It sounds like things were pretty organized on the E Coast. Arch Republican governor of NJ all to happy for federal aid and the NYT calls it http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/30/opinion/a-big-storm-requires-big-government.html.
NY has so much underground, the power and subways, wonder how long to bring them back?
