Halloween?

edited October 2012
I don't usually do a thing for Halloween but I kind of want to this year! What is the fun thing that is happening this weekend?

  • Ask Marcus. I tried to book a meeting with him and he said no because it was Halloween.

BOO! (i mean that in the sense of an utterance to show disapproval or contempt, not as an attempt to suddenly surprise someone)

    (FYI: i'm a halloween hater.)

    Don't hate... decorate.

    image
You know all those leaves on the stairs have been glued in place...
    image
So you don't have to be bothered to answer the door... just leave the light on, the kids will figure it out
    image
Isn't it fun to bring all the boxes of decorations out of the holiday decoration storage room?
  • I'm not sure Martha Stewart is a very good role model.

    image
  • Wow, she really lost juice.
  • What do those numbers even represent?
My guess is, numbers of jerks who matter to her......

    MARTHA DGAF
  • I still go to Martha with any questions regarding The Home. I don't buy her branded shit, but I never did... she's still queen bitch when it comes to telling me how to make a great bean salad!
  • ps I LOVE HALLOWEEN
  • Me and my Roy Lichtenstein costume will be at The Goodfoot shaking booty to Jujuba.
  • I just spent a week making a costume out of a cardboard box. Thrifty!
  • @Mikey: Don't hate on Halloween! There has to be some sort of Brooks Brothers thing you can wear that day, you'll find it!

I love Halloween, best day of the year in my opinion. I hope there will be some sort of poker game at my house that night. Love to have people around, LOVE to give candy to the kids. SO MUCH! We have a pretty good Halloween neighborhood with kids from all walks of life Trick or Treating. I love being a home owner around Halloween, I have FIVE pumpkins this year (two ghost pumpkins, the white ones).

I am a believer in spooky Halloween. I favor scary costumes over the funny or the sexy ones. I am contemplating borrowing a giant witch head from a friend this year.

I mainly love the idea of kids being out and about in the dark, going to neighbors doors, all these things you are not usually supposed to do.

As for Martha: I have never watched the show and haven't bought her things but must admit that overall (if I ignore the made in China side) she seems like a positive influence. All those moms from the eighties had to quit smoking at some point and find something else to do with their hands. I think that keeping a cozy home, making your own napkin rings, and baking spiderweb cheesecakes helps calm the nerves, and I find that being a good host is something we all need to learn someday (regardless of gender).
  • I wish you jerks would have bought some MSO stuff. I lost a lot of money on that stock.

    (no joke)
  • I don't need her stuff, just her brain juices!
  • lolo - I'm going Roy Lichenstein, too!
  • We’ve been watching scary movies. I really like scary movies. Sometimes. Scariest of movies like the Shining. Also, don’t watch From Dusk Till Dawn. The first half with all its anticipation and shit is supremely better than the second half.
  • edited October 2012
beg to disagree the second half is bad ass. it's more like it switches between types of movies (which we know is typical of that dickrector). first half is a slow-building suspense, second half is like roadhouse/revenge tale.
  • Yeah, I should have expected such.
  • flossy... yesss Do you know what your word bubble will read yet?
  • I'm doing Halloween for the first time in years. We are having a live party with OCNotes at HallowEarthRadio. Trying for Michael Jackson's nose. I'll be getting smaller, paler, and more plastic elf skull through the course of the evening.
  • I also rewatched From Dusk Til Dawn this year. The morphing effects were pretty silly.
  • I like Halloween but I hate dressing up!

I'm going to Classical Revolution's Decomposers Ball, at the Alberta Rose Theater. They're playing scary music by dead composers. Shostakovich and shit. Should be weird and fun. If you don't know what Classical Revolution is you should google it because it's cool.

    see you there!

If I were going to dress up (you're supposed to dress up as a dead composer and be prepared with puns) I would be Clara BOOman
  • Maybe I should go as Honey BOO BOO.

It has the potential to be scary.

(anyone else noticed how many Honey Boo Boo references there are these days?)
  • I wish I had an idea for a halloween costume as good as when I dressed up as Ken Starr in 1997.
  • The only good Halloween costume I've ever done was Eminem. I won "most offensive" at a Halloween party! It was at the early 00's height of people being like "gasp, misogyny and homophobia" w/r/t Eminem. Pretty great costume, I looked just like him. Ol' skinny ghostly-white albino looking motherfucker
  • Ken Starr is very funny
would be even funnier to go as Ken Starr NOW. Such a weird old reference.
  • Well I got it out of my system. Went to weird warehouse costume party last night dressed as City Mouse to Ian's Country Mouse. It was medium fun. We also stopped by our school's Pizza Bingo Night and got to see our kids in their funny costumes. That was maximum fun. On actual Halloween I'll go to ballet class dressed as a ballerina.
  • I wanna go as the dad/Coach Lubbock from the Growing Pains spin off show Just The Ten Of Us.

    Bald cap/track suit
  • Not too late for me to go as Detective Olivia Benson! I even have a little bb handgun

    STOP OR I'LL SHOOT!
  • I've been telling Andy that I'm going as "the hottest little thing on the prison yard."
  • I was going to go as Butt Dylan but I couldn't find a butt mask so I'm just going to write "Banksy" on a white t-shirt with a sharpie instead.
  • I'm going as someone who doesn't like dressing up for Halloween.
Just now at Buffalo Exchange I tried out this new epiphany--the girl buying clothes goes "So what are you dressing up as?" and I go "I DON'T LIKE DRESSING UP!" and she goes "wow, you said that so confidently!" and I said "Yeah I just realized it" and she said "congratulations!" Then she bought all my scarves and mittens

If I can stop being deathly ill long enough to perambulate on Hallow's Eve I'll being going as this little critter:

the ghosts are sad but the story is deeply creepy...

Yeah, when I was Ken Starr it was 2 weeks after the Starr Report came out. I carried around a giant 900 page book that said "STARR REPORT" on the cover.

God I was a weird teenager!
  • Today it would have to be Sexy Ken Starr.
  • Pics please KDawg? I want to see Lil Ken Starr!
  • Why is everybody doing costumes tonight?

    It is not Halloween.

    I'm lodging a protest.

    What about Wednesday?

I do not like this one bit.
  • Sexy Banksy
    http://instagram.com/p/RTyNizEqjl

DrJ, it's because Saturday nite is to party! Going to dress up on Wednesday of course.
  • No respect for tradition anymore!

    Harumphft!
  • The purpose of civilization is to delay gratification (permanently if possible). This pseudo-"Halloween" before Halloween is a travesty.

Think of the confusing message it sends to the younger generation.
  • Eight year-old Isaac H. coined the term "Business Halloween"perfectly while explaining to Fudge that he is celebrating Halloween twice. Business Halloween is the Saturday before Halloween, when you dress up and collect candy from businesses around town (like the Business). Then there is real Halloween.
Tonight is "Party Halloween", the night when the people with jobs get to spend all day getting ready (it takes a while and a lot of vaseline to put on that latex Catwoman costume) and then all night getting sloshed with another day to rest before going to work.
How do I know this you ask?
I used to have friends with JOBS.
  • Yeah, duh!

Andy went on a really good rant earlier about why she doesn't like Halloween parties that was like

"Everyone thinks it's ok to 'let loose' because they're in a costume, so they're just even bigger assholes than usual."
  • Even BUSINESS TRICK-OR-TREAT is Wednesday. We're handing out vinyl.
  • DO PEOPLE REALLY USE VASELINE TO GET INTO THEIR GROSS COSTUMES

this holiday is even more awkward than i thought
  • I read recently that latex suits require lube when you put them on. It's a long complicated process. I think mixing sexy with any holiday is bad.

    I don't think it's Halloween that's awkward, I think it's the people!

    HALLOWEEN IS BEST!
Hurray for non-religious holidays that happen at night!

I visited two pumpkin patches this year and you know what?
    I LIKED IT.
  • NYC Halloween is complicated. So many slutty jersey shore because of the parade. So many kids in soup kitchen style lines getting candy. Really fancy West side families with too nice costumes. Parents with painted faces. Babies in bars wearing costumes.
  • Today is Hurricane Halloween where people buy tons of canned food and bottled water that they’ll never use.

we awkwardly went un-costumed to a costume party that was clearly labeled "costume party" in the invitation, and then Gary was ASTONISHED that everyone there was in costume. I said "what did you expect" and he said "I expected 75% costumes, not 100%." Apparently 100% made our lack of costumery too awkward for almost everyone involved and so we soon left. Some of those costumes were amazing.

Looking at costumes just makes me tired and vaguely irritated. I know people for whom Halloween lets them Be Who They Truly Are (art/craft nerds) and I think that's awesome. For me I will stay home and watch The Shining.

Classical Revolution was so great though.

  • I think there is a way to do Halloween comfortably. I think just having a simple black dress which can be used at the last minute as a witch costume is nice, you can probably even find a cheap hat once Halloween is over and have those two things around the house and wear them every year.
Not everyone has to be crazy original. It's nice to see some last-minute classics. The white sheet, that's pretty easy. You can just be your normal self underneath and it's the easiest thing to take off when you've had enough.
Also, a costume can be some face painting, but that is trickier because some people (like me) don't like having shit on their face.
I still have no idea what my costume will be this year, but I feel like I need something when I give away candy because kids (especially little ones) like to ask you what your costume is whether or not you are wearing your normal clothes. Having kids think what you are naturally wearing is a joke feels weird.

  • "Having kids think what you are naturally wearing is a joke feels weird."

    HAHAHAHAHA

    good call
