How are we voting?

edited October 2012
You can make a strong case for a straight Merc ticket. Anyone object to their calls? I have not historically been a Fritz fan, but Nolan seems to be turning off just about everybody I know.

  • Nolan and Smith.

Noland Smith? With Damian Lillard benched with a bruised foot I thought he was gonna have more of a break out game, but it was Coby Karl that really impressed. Picked up just days ago, in front of his Dad (opposing team head coach George Karl), he really had a shining moment. it was hard not to feel touched. All in all, a great showing as the Blazers beat the Nuggets 97-80 in their debut performance in front of a home-town rose garden crowd in the pre-season.
    Who else looked good?

You're voting for a lady puncher who violated the resulting no-contact order and lied about the details of the incident? Not to mention his six drivers' license suspensions and seven speeding tickets (including one at 52 MPH in a 35 MPH zone - as in, basically outside my house, where I bike with my kid), his unpaid State Bar fees, or the testicle-punching incident? You have more stomach for douchebaggery than I do.
  • In the "LEAST AWFUL" game I'm picking Chuck Hales.

He might not be an inspirational leader but he seems less likely to break things.

(If we're lucky he'll quit halfway through his term like he did last time we elected him.)

Also, I was part of a ballot measure committee meeting last night and this is how it resulted:

    image
  • I hate lady punchers.
Just wanted to go on the record about that.
  • What about fuzzy bon-bon punchers?
  • (do not google image search for "fuzzy bon-bon" if your boss is looking at your computer)
  • I'm still not ready to go on the record about fuzzy bon-bon punchers.
  • why is this year's mayoral race so tepid?
seems like every candidate is kind of "eh" or outright "yuck"
    ?
seems like there would be some cool badasses who'd want to be mayor of our rad town
  • After running that google search, I am definitely voting "no" on "fuzzy bon-bon" :(
  • Write in Sam Adams?
  • Sammy will always be my mayor.
  • jeff smith seems cool if not for the punching. moral of the story: I hate fraternities
  • I agree with all the consensus calls on Mike's statewide ballot measures except for the gill nets one. It makes no sense. It's not really an environmental measure. If we don't pass it (or maybe even if we do), the governor is going to go and make a smarter deal that addresses the same problem. You, the voter, are being used as a tool in a squabble between two groups of people who like fish. Vote no.

In terms of the local measures:
26-143 creates a library district and funds the library through property tax. It's funded in kind of a shitty way (it will take money from other services), but I will vote for it.
26-144 is a big school maintenance bond. They need it. Easy yes.
26-145 tweaks the way police and firefighter pensions are funded. It makes it harder to game the system. Easy yes.
26-146 taxes everyone in the city at $35 per person per year to fund arts education and arts organizations. Obviously good things to fund, but a particuarly shitty way to fund them, as it's a regressive tax. Why shouldn't big shot rich people pay more while poor people can pay less for this? That's the way the rest of our tax system works. I'm undecided, leaning toward no. I'll probably suck it up and vote yes, but I feel like I'm doing poor people a disservice.
  • I'm voting Nolan, though I can understand a vote for the mildly wacky Fritz (zebra car, anyone?). And obviously Hales. Smith makes me cringe. I expect he will be unelectable to any office after this. What would it say about our city if we elected him? Awful.

Hales: He'll be better than Tom Potter!
  • Oh, but I do want to say that Fritz's image as the candidate of the people and champion of public campaign funding is pretty severly undermined by the fact that she's personally given hundreds of thousands of dollars to her campaign. Doesn't add up. Having a lot of money doesn't qualify you to be an elected official.
  • "They say it's really intense and difficult to grow marijuana, and I'm saying no it ain't," Umatilla County Sheriff John Trumbo says. "You plant it and trim it. You can grow it all day."

He sure seems to know a lot about this…

    http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2012/10/marijuana_would_be_treated_lik.html

Does anyone give a shit that we're voting to legalize marijuana?

Will it turn out the stoner vote?

Why is no one talking about this?
  • Slim chance, right? It would be nice to be done with it (legalized). Feels like such a dumb thing to be constantly debating.
  • I don't want to introduce yet another intoxicant and open the spigot full blast so everyone can get stoned all the time," says Josh Marquis

Marquis says the most salient argument against the measure is that pretty much anyone in Oregon who wants to smoke marijuana can -- and does.

    SO WHICH IS IT, MARQUIS?

I haven't seen Oregon polls, but a similar measure is at 47 yes, 40 no in Washington State. Pretty close!

The yes side is ahead 50 to 40 in Colorado, too.
  • Yeah, I heard it has a better chance in those places. Then maybe it'll pass here next time around. Colorado is gearing up pretty big to be a player in the new industry.
  • It is so weird that I cannot vote for a congressperson!
  • Why can't you?
  • DC has no representation in Congress, right?
  • Oh, I didn't know that was a DC comment. They have a fake representative. http://norton.house.gov

Norton does her best, but the whole thing is ridiculous! Half a million people in this city!
  • What's a fuzzy bon bon?
  • In an executive race, an even US senate and house, I look at it as electing a slate of advisors and staff (and a whole set of campaign funders with their weirding ways!), much, much less so an individual.

Nolan, Fritz, Smith and Hales are all fine candidates.

Douche is a term like slut, and people should drop using both for the same reason. IMO.
  • You're saying Jefferson Smith isn't the dictionary definition of a douchebag? I beg to differ. I can only think of a handful of times I've called someone that in my life, but here, I use it because it's exactly what I mean.
  • edited October 2012
But lest we let the semantic discussion distract us, I use that term to indicate a privileged male who has bad intentions, is not trustworthy, and has gotten away with outrageously bad behavior in the past through intimidation, bluster, and charisma. Either way, it's not someone I'm going to vote for.

The pot law up for a vote in the great state of Washington will set up a whole state run industry, much like the way liquor was sold (until voters shut that system down last year.)

    Anyway.

State regulated distribution! A 25% EXCISE TAX! We're going to make so much stinkin' money up here we might even be able to afford medical care, roads, schools, libraries... a big sasquatch for Anacortes... who knows!?

Pretty sad about Jefferson. Hope he works that stuff out. I thought he had talent.

And I think I get Dr Bill's point.

Dirtbag, for example, has the same effect without implying that lady parts are nasty.

    Sounds right. Right?

Just read through all of Freddy's links. Holy moly. Cat's got issues. 2004 was a bad year for driving. Punching people at sport. Geez.

Sit with a shrink, guy. Do something humble for a few years.

    Good luck, Portland.

(What is it with you and the mayors?)
  • Lets talk about "douchebag." The reason I like it, is because it literally describes an object that we could tag with Freddy's description of a human douchebag! Well maybe "literally" is too strong a word. But when I think of douche and douching, I think of shitty corporate men telling women their bodies are disgusting in order to make money off of the resulting shame.

    "bad intentions." "not trustworthy." "intimidation."

So I actually think it works, as an insult. Unlike "pussy" which is just fucked up.

All hail douchebag as a pejorative!

"douchebags are a hygenic product, I take that as a compliment, thank you!"
  • Feelin' schooled! Thank ye.
  • Also they are dumb and bad for your health

    yeah!

god. I so remember all the jugs of summer's eve on the shelf of the communal shower in boarding school. Even then I was like "???" and "Really?"

Vagina Monologues: "Why do you want it to smell like roses when it's supposed to smell like pussy?"

I definitely fell prey to many body-punishing patriarchal beauty bullshits (crazy exercise regiments; looking in the mirror and sobbing; shaving myself raw twice a day; one time shaving my ARMS) but at least douching wasn't one of them.

what about all those old-timey douches to prevent pregnancy? Douche with vinegar, two newt's eyeballs, and the blood from the menstrual period of a witch

    ultimate thread hijack
  • It works!! I should know
  • NO!
    LT that is "bad science"
  • I'm telling you!

Another one that works is doing sit-ups after
  • also if you hold a male toad in your mouth the whole time your husband is at his business you will give birth to a male child
  • Don't read this:

There is seriously an old lady here who uses DILUTED PINE SOL to clean her fuzzy bon bon.

PINE SOL? Oh my god. It makes me feel weird and sad. I want to slap her and hold her at the same time.
