PNCA Experimental Musics Weeks Starts Sunday Night 9/23

edited September 2012
""Early Fall is apparently the time in Portland for experimental and ambient listening events galore. These exciting weeks begin on Sunday, September 23rd with a FREE six-channel installation at PNCA featuring Robert Henke (Monolake), Marcus Fischer, and many more local musicians. It continues on September 26th and September 28th with two sessions from New Age guru IASOS, and goes even further on September 30th with a REDEFINE-sponsored event with modern classical composer Nils Frahm...
Expect two more similar events next week, centered around Deep Listening and John Cage.

SIX @ PNCA
w/ Robert Henke, Marcus Fischer, Solenoid, Strategy + Jetfinger, Swoemer, Mike Jedlicka + WNDFRM
For 2012, PNCA’s Video & Sound Department has taken on the 5th edition of SIX, an experimental, six-channel surround sound performance series. Free and open to the public, the entire purpose of the event is to immerse listeners in a listening experience unlike any other. Patrons are encouraged to bring blankets, pillows, and anything that will help make them comfortable in the environment.
Sunday, September 23rd, 2012 @ PNCA Main Campus
(Swigert Commons, 1241 NW Johnson St., Portland, OR)
FREE

German composer, sound designer, installation artist, and co-founder of Ableton, Robert Henke, is well-versed in both academic and club-oriented aspects of contemporary sound, and will be a centerpiece of this event. He will also be presenting a lecture the following day, entitled Sound, Structures, and Machines. Details can be seen on PNCA’s calendar.
Henke will be supported by a host of extremely talented multi-instrumentalists and Portland locals Marcus Fischer, Strategy, Jetfinger, Solenoid, Dweomer, Mike Jedlicka, and Tim Westcott. Expect lots of tech, custom-made analog synths, and more.""

Cool! Were you there, Wm Hayward? I was the one in the black dress at one of the cameras. We were documenting the whole thing for PNCAs archives, but we are going to do a cut of the Henke footage for the local cable access show Experimental Half Hour. I did an interview with him before the show...... he is incredibly down-to-earth and funny ("can you make me look more goth in post?"). Best part which may or may not make it into the interview: at the end he did a crack on the USA about Evolution! "I just want to say, evolution IS REAL." I felt so ashamed but it was awesome.

What did you think about the fact that everyone was sitting, as opposed to walking around the 6-channel sound field? Obviously PNCA invited everyone to bring pillows and even had blankets put down in the middle, but I heard chatter from musicians and attendees that they wished there was more of a mobile vibe. I think they are going to change the verbage for the next one.

Not sure if I will make it to the lecture tonight...... Are you going to Iasos? I think I'm going to do an interview/EHH taping for that.....
  • sorry to have missed

Henke's piece was cool..... really slow and subtle, just layers of washy atmospheric texture wrapping over themselves, folding and winding back around (all from field recordings). Those in the audience who tend to be more active listeners appeared to be really tranced out afterwards. I was not paying 100% attention with my ears because I was zooming in on my camera trying to figure out how to make a shot of a guy staring at a computer look dynamic ^_^

My favorite performer of the Six (besides Henke of course) was one who Flvnt described as "wankery"
  • rule of thumb: zoom way in on hand touching knob, then zoom way in on furtive brow of man touching knob
  • this might also work for masturbation vids
  • which of course is why sometimes people think of these things in terms of 'wanking'

What else are you gonna do? I also shot his fashion accessories......... some long shots where you follow the gear to the plug, go along the cords, and then end mysteriously wherever things get all jumbled........ and the rapt crowd, of course. And some lights with the lens unfocused for POST
  • Seattle has the Decibel Festival so we are getting some of those artists. A fine time was had by all of the attentive, creative crowd. When is the dusk to dawn version?

(My college town had a dusk to morning experimental music and visual program themed on the pre dream state at the planetarium. People brought sleeping bags and breakfasted in the morning. There was also a downtempo NYE that has happened in Portland along those lines)
