stupid ear buds?

edited July 2012
Hey!
Do any of you have a spare pair of those stupid ear buds they give you free with your iPod or whatever? I blew the left speaker in mine and now when I jog there's a very annoying buzz whenever Rihanna pumps the bass. I hate how the stupid ear buds feel in my ears but they seem like the best kind of headphone for jogging?

If you have a spare pair hanging out let me know!

  • Drop by the Apple Store with them and complain. I've gotten a free pair that way.

Me too! Say they're under warranty. They will not check.

I bought some "sport" buds that are purportedly water (sweat) resistant for when I run. And they have thingies that go behind my ears so they don't bounce out or what not.
  • I scotch tape mine in

they are dumb. The left one is way quieter than the right

    oh well
  • I am appalled that people would put those shitty apple earbuds next to their eardrums

i know they seem like "whatever cheap and fuck it yo dont need fancy headphones and these are just fine and if they break then fuck it and i hate the ones that go in my ear canal these are mellow"
but i say, spend literally ANY amount of money from $10 to $100 after a quick google search for "best earbuds for ____"
for the love of all people that make the music in the world you like
ANYTHING WOULD BE BETTER THAN THEM PIECES OF GARBAGE YOU "LISTEN TO MUSIC" THRU.

i think of those images of people putting their ear up to their "portable transistor radio" as they walk down the street in like 1965. DUDES! wtf!

    THESE COST $7

    SORRY FOR YELLING
THOSE EARPHONES ARE LIKE, SOOO MUCH MORE YELLY THAN MY ALL CAPS

  • aren't the ear canal ones super bad for your hearing?
i have sensitive ears!! in terms of loudness hurting them
  • also what do we do if we're too lazy to get new earplugs?????????
  • i cant do my work!
  • the ear canal ones are not bad for you per se
    its volume that is bad
one argument is that the volume on them is much quieter because they block out so much outside sound and also they are very clear sounding so there is no need for great volume

it is more damaging to blast the shitty distorted sounding ones hella loud, they have a more limited, more colored frequency representation, meaning that they are probably distorting and amplifying a small band of frequencies more than all the other ones
listening to an hour of the same small band of frequencies hella loud getting distorted right next to your ear not only sounds to me to be more dangerous to yr ears but also, like, why would u wanna do that?

  • oh u mean those ones that have the squishies? fuck it i dunno, just like buy some extras on ebay for a few bucks?

if that is too much work, then god bless you and good night
  • i might be a little ranty cause i bought my own BU a couple pairs of better headphones which she has claimed to have lost or "left at work" and i see her with the little apple ones at night listening to her shows!
im like - yo bu! where'd the other ones go!?

    OMG
Buy ME some Alan, never will I stray!
    THAT INGRATE

Also, can you explain why Apple keeps making such shitty ones? They just don't care? I guess not, since we all keep using them
  • I think some people disagree as to their audio quality.

And many of us commoners either aren't sensitive enough to tell the difference, or are listening in conditions (on the bus, on a run) where it would be hard to appreciate the accurate response of Sennheiser or Grado or whatever.
  • I have come to H8 those apple buds!

They constantly fall out, they don't fit my ear right and start hurting, they don't sound great or get real loud. It is sort of crazy that apple makes such an incredibly shitty headphone.

I've had a couple other pairs of in-ear phones that I really loved. None cost more than $40, most cost like $20. I broke one pair, lost one pair, and one pair lives at work. Thus, when I am watching reality tv at home and Adam is meditating on life I have to use the dreaded white bud.
  • When someone comes out with a $10 shitty bud that has the microphone I can talk into and the little clicker dude for skipping tracks, I'm sold. Gimme that!

  • i dont own senheisser or grado and sorta hate people who over do the hi fi thing

im just talking about adiquacy vs people scotch taping apple ear buds back together, etc

nuds w mic rmgonna cost more regardless, even apple ones are at least $20
  • no, I meant I scotch tape them into my ears when I jog, because otherwise they fall out.
And this has been the case with every earbud I've ever had--I used to try to jog with Gary's fancy audio editing ones and they fell out too.
Maybe I just have small ear holes??
  • You wrote this at 4:45 am!

I was awake too, casually drinking a beer. Fell asleep on the couch at like 11 pm, then had a mid-night interlude of wakefulness. I made no UHX postings, but I did make a blog post.
  • "second sleep!"

you were living a very medieval-style night! Except they went to sleep at like 5:00.
  • cool attitude
  • if one has to scotch tape equipment to one's body, the equipment doesn't work right.
    i think.

And I hope you don't use shitty Western Family scotch tape, pay a little extra for medical tape. Geez!
  • RT @alexmahan "What if Scotch Tape actually used a scotch-based adhesive? I'd be sniffing tape a lot more, that's for sure! #Laphroaig"
  • I have seen little foam covers that go over the earbuds - Radio Shack, Amazon. Ear canals are different, not one size.

They are working on a jack directly into the auditory nerve/cortex, but the fidelity is not there yet.
  • YT I'm thinking the boom box might work great for you actually

Get those shoulders built up, too
  • omg i just borrowed sarahs white earbuds to walk downthe street listening to tunes

    THESE THINGS REALLY DO SUCK!

listening to shit i made and am shocked at how shitty these make everything sound

also any bass makes them rattle like they will break

    wow
  • yeah but did you remember that she hacked her buds especially for her "WildLife: Best of Natural Sounds, Volume 1-200" CD. The rattle is on purpose (listen to the frog CDs (V. 15-38) and you will hear why.

  • RCH on fire today.
  • I bought the $7 ear buds Alan linked to above. I'm excited to hear my favorite bands sound 1000% better or my money back... right Alan?

    Thanks for the tips!
  • rad! let us know how they sound!
and of course you are listening to wavs, aiffs, apple lossless, flacs, ogg vorbis or at least 320kbps mp3s right??????

  • I just hope I will be able to hear *at all* after the amount times Frogtor has blasted high volume feedback into my ears.
  • dude come on
  • remember when you didnt turn the master fader up on the mixer and then gave me shit for not turning you up on the other board?
  • Remember all those beers I drank before that?
  • I got beers in my ears!
  • Wanda, how those buds treating you? I need a new pair, myself, and would appreciate a review!
  • Oh hi!
You know something? They are working out great! They sound so good and stay in my ears when I'm running! Only complaints are echoes of Zin's above- no button for skipping songs on the cord, no built in mic. But sound-wise? So much better!

    Thanks for the tips, Alan!

i'd love to hear them, i'd love to read reviews of them

if they are anything like other apple accessory products, im sure they are over-priced
i suspect the technologies used are in existence
i suspect there are much better sounding dudes for the price
but i'd love to believe jonny ive's video all about the earphones but i dunno

i like it when he goes "it would be like trying to make a shoe fit everyone's feet...which is impossible....but its exactly what we tried to do"

  • yeah, the video is really good. at the very least, i believe that they're trying. it would actually benefit apple if people liked their headphones.

yeah, i like that part of it and am cautiously optimistic about the whole thing.
how have shitty earbuds affected the enjoyment and production of music of today?
trap hi hats! (& i love trap hi hats!)

i checked out them new apple earpods cause i hung with a dude (steve) who got a new iphone 5 aka the long n skinny

they sounds pretty nice. they are a HUGE improvement over their old pieces of shit.
much more frequency range, much less distortion at high volumes, much less distortion over all and much of a sweeter, less high treble intensive sound.

nice, especially if "all the way in your ear canal" type in-ears are not your cup of tea.

its a pretty good price point too. they are only maybe $5 too expensive compared to other similar earbuds with the buttons and mic.

what did steve think of the earpods?
