What version of Os X do you have? Some suggestions 1. Open Finder and do a smart search for all photos to verify your pics are some where 2. Click on the iPhoto menu in iPHoto and go to preferences... look around for some kind of specified directory. Maybe that has changed?
in my iPhoto, there's a sidebar on the left that lists all of my albums, etc. Your screenshot looks like mine when the "last import" album is selected. I would look under the "view" "events" and "window" menus to see if there's a "Show sidebar" option or something similar. (sorry, I'm not at my home computer, so I can't look up what it might actually be called)
hmmm how about holding down option when you open it? this allows you to select between opening different iphoto libraries. maybe you started a new library on accident somehow?
I gotta get off of iPhoto. It's so slow, it always beach balls! My library is 63 GB, which is maybe responsible for the problem? Doesn't seem that big.
What is the right thing to do? Aperture? I don't think the folders in Finder approach will work for me.

It is the worst apple program, and really clumsy. Make your own folders! Always know where your files are! Edit in photoshop for accuracy!
*my two cents
I think I will hire you to help me with my folders. Do you accept cat nuzzles as payment?
I have done this service before, it's a pleasure to untangle the digital knots and present a clean slate to someone.
