what's the vibe? I'm thinking of making a trip
want a big ol' chunky robe for wintertime
where is the closest one? The one in Washougal looks like it is just fabric remnants
who wants to go

Comments

  • No! Milwaukee one is remnants! Washougal one is straight up blankets and clothing- just what you are looking for. It's great! Not quite as cheap as you want it to be, but still much cheaper than retail plus there are definitely deals to be had.

I'll go with you! River then robes!
  • lets do it!!!!!!!
  • well I just looked at the online catalogue and they only have 2 robes? Both are boring men's robes. I want a cool old indian print robe!

there is one at the vintage store by my house for $65, which I thought was crazily expensive, but now I'm thinking I should go snap it up

    ?

yeah you should get that one for sure is the thing! if it's the one you like you will cuss yourself forever for not swooping it.
  • $65 is incredibly legit for a garment that has stood the test of time
plus they have done SO many color/pattern combos you may never see the same two.... if you see one you like snatch it up quick

Did you all know that you can send away for a free info packet from Pendleton Woollen Mills
    It is true.
They send you this awesome booklet about wool. It has tiny hanks of fiber. It even has a vial of lanolin. >_<

P.S. Have you ever been to Tanner Springs Park? From a sign there I learned that Portland was the premier tanner of leather west of the Mississippi in the 19th century. I would like to learn more about Oregon's history of wool and leather industry. I would also like to learn more about the designs that Pendleton uses. If you'll recall, recently Urban Outfitters got the smack down for unauthorized use of Navajo designs. The Navajo Nation licenses their own designs and the use of their name. I wonder what kind of relationship they have with Pendleton considering that the "Navajo" blanket has been their main stay for many years.

    The More You Know
  • fascinating! I too would like to know more about this!
Perhaps due simply to its age Pendleton falls under some sort of grandfather clause with the indian nations? Like 200 years ago Mr. Pendleton purchased the pattern rights for a handful of glass beads or some bullshit
    would not be surprised
  • Buy that robe! $65 is a great price, says I!
  • Oh man! You guys are total enablers! I love it!
I'll walk the dog down there today and buy that thing if it fits right and is not disgusting (did not examine it super closely)
    YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE
  • I know that Pendleton does a special line of blankets every year where profits go to the American Indian College Fund?

I am sure this discussion is more nuanced and complicated, but I highly doubt they just slap a design together, throw it on some underpants and call it "Navajo" (like UO).
  • *rant* This past weekend, I took my mom (visiting from Southern Illinois) to a Pendleton outlet because she wanted to go shopping and I thought she'd appreciate the quality goods.

INSTEAD, she thinks that I am a part of some PNW hippie cult. BUGH! I hate everything.
  • why does Pendleton = hippie cult??

    weird!
  • My dad and stepmom were here visiting from TX this past weekend and my stepmom just HAD to go to the "flagship Pendleton store" before leaving... so I drug them downtown where they complained about the walking distance (and lack of parking lots) and then she DIDN'T EVEN BUY ANYTHING. She was just like "I guess I'll just end up getting something from the website."

    DOH
  • I want to hear more about the hippie cult reasoning.

Visitors who complain are such jerks.

They're just insecure that their babies are rejecting their home town... which is kinda true, so it is a legitimate defensive position
  • so true!
the walking is funny. you do forget living in Portland (or somewhere intense like small town Colorado) how little the average American WALKS in a given day. When certain family/friends/etc. visit my parents or me it's like you have to really remind yourself that they basically can't walk. Anything more than a block is considered sort of crazy, by a lot of people. It's sad but true.

complaining visitor is like, what is even the point of you being a visitor? I got shit to do man
  • 1) we walk too much
    2) we do not put ice in our water
    3) there are no AC or over head ceiling fans
  • 4) we MUST be part of some hippie cult
  • p.s. hi lolo

    5. That FrontLine episode about speed
  • I agree with LT's theory, but am so tired of GROWN ADULTS ACTING LIKE SPOILED BABIES.
  • Also, when I say "grown adults" I mean people that are a generation older than me and should be setting an example.
  • Hey LT, when you brought up the respect question about Pendleton's designs, this short story by Sherman Alexie in War Dances was the first thing that popped into my head (scroll down to page 9 for a brief description):
    http://chi.academia.edu/LoreeWestron/Papers/888741/Indianness_and_Identity_in_the_Novels_and_Short_Stories_of_Sherman_Alexie

In the story he gets into the layers of feelings, vibes, and rhetoric of Indians vis a vis Pendleton blankets. Maybe it was in the New Yorker before the book came out - ooh here it is for those with subscriptions: http://www.newyorker.com/fiction/features/2009/08/10/090810fi_fiction_alexie

(I also want to hear more about the hippie cult reasoning)
  • A friend just posted on Facebook talking about floods in Texas and a corn-killing drought and wildfires in Canada, and I know Colorado was on fire.

Meanwhile, things seem pretty nice here. Maybe our hippie cult is working?
  • I don't really have an explanation for the hippie cult reasoning. I was blindsided and kept unknowingly digging myself into a deeper hole. I think LT summed it up well with "They're just insecure that their babies are rejecting their home town."

I am so happy and doing something that I truly enjoy. I AM DOING EVERYTHING RIGHT, WHAT GIVES?!

I guess I'll notch it up to "parents just don't understand."

Pendleton is NW locals. I have found cool stuffs at the Washougal Pendleton cheap. And they have sweet old lady staff. Great for grandma visitors. But if you are looking for something specific, call ahead. They are trying to "modernize" at Pendleton so the "vintage" look may not be in stock. But still worth a visit to calibrate, and in Summer, plenty of swimming holes on that river. Very cool on the history post.
